Correction, thanks to Vladimir Shvarts: I misspoke when I said the SL2/200d has 720p @ 120fps. That feature is only available on the M50. What's up everyone?! I hope this comparison of the Canon M50 and SL2 + sample footage and images is helpful. Did you like it? I purchased my first DSLR a Canon T1i many years ago, I love taking great pictures but found it too bulky for traveling most of the time. I am upgrading to the Sl2 because of its size, features and my lenses will fit., I feel like I will use it more often. The Viltrox Speed-booster makes the M50 a much better option. It tuurbo-charges my Canon EF lenses.

Before buying my M50 this year I watched several of your reviews on various cameras. Your reviews were tremendously helpful! For me, it came down to weight. I like hiking and can no longer lug around a lot of gear. Every ounce adds up. I decided the M50 along with a couple of lenses and my iPhone 12 Pro Max is all I can manage. I took some photos on a high country trail in Yosemite, and right out of the box I didn’t have any problem using the M50 in auto mode. I did get the extra batteries, thanks for the tip, I needed them! I’ll check out your user manual on the M50 again, and in a little while I’ll check on a zoom lens that won’t break my back. I’d like to get nice sharp close-ups of El Capitan and Half Dome. Thanks again for bringing some light into my photography confusion!

Thank you so much for this video man! Really helpful and detailed! The only thing you could have perhaps added is mentioning which of these cameras allows you to open the battery and memory card lid without unscrewing the plate, which can be a big deal for some

That 70-200 looked gigantic on the sl2 lol. Great video! I plan on getting the sl3 since it incorporates the digic 8 and 4k video, closing the gap even more. I was already leaning toward the sl2 because I don’t have to pay 150 bucks for an adapter for my current lenses. With these changes it’s a clear choice for me. There are so (too) many ways. One of the easiest is to pull out and replace one eyepiece with an adapter that has some optics and connects to the camera without lens. These adapters cost between ~$100 and >$1000, depending on quality, etc.. Once installed, the Canon Camera Connect app should be very helpful for seeing the image and taking pics and videos.

@@TechGearTalk , I think I've narrowed it down to the Canon M50 and the Panasonic Lumix GX 850 as far as price and size they are what I'm looking for. The flip screen on the Lumix is on top though and no audio unless you use an audio recorder. Can you give any input? My needs are lightweight, affordable, pictures and vlogging. M50. Audio is so important, so why force yourself to sync it every time? Af is better on the M50 also. Image quality is great on both. Overall user experience is better on the canon imo

Buy it nice, or buy it twice. Great break down of the two cameras. Thank you. For me I’m stocked with EF lenses so it’s an easy choice for me, SL2 all the way baby! Lol.

eh, it would have been more helpful if you actually vlogged with both and showed the differences. Don't get me wrong super helpful video with all the technical differences (i'm subscribed, not hating), but the thing you're missing is a real world example. Nobody is making videos of stationary objects. I've used both and these are the main differences: M50 The M50 has that digital stabilization which is JUST OK, it's good enough to where you can walk and talk into the camera or walk and show what a landscape is like - (if you're a travel vlogger this important) and have the video be somewhat stable. The SL2 however is mess. It's super shaky, you really can't walk and talk with that camera. Also the M50, while more stable it crops in a lot with stabilization on. So it's harder to get a wide angle look and have it be smooth and stable. SL2 The SL2 has higher quality video. It's looks like an 80D. The M50 looks like an Iphone. Both are good, just the SL2 is better. It also native access to all those amazing lenses like the 50mm and the 10-8mm. Making the Sl2 so affordable for the quality you get. Conclusion The M50 is smaller and the lenses are smaller which is great - It's the superior on the go travel camera. But the speed booster everyone talks about is expensive. People don't realize this. They think it's like a cheap adapter you can get at Walmart :) It's not. Also, it makes the M50 bigger, the point of the M50 is to be small. If you're doing sit down, talk into the camera videos, get the Sl2. If you want higher quality video, get the Sl2. If you want the most bang for your buck, get the Sl2. If you want something small, capable and somewhat stable - particularly if you're doing a lot of on the go, outdoor recording get the M50. I'm assuming anyone reading this, that you're a beginner. I ended up buying the SL2.

If someone is willing to give up a few things (headphone jack, weather sealing, etc) the sl2 is a great 80d alternative. I did another video showing the image quality comparison. The reason for shooting static objects in that video is to keep the subject and lighting identical. Glad to have you as a contributing member of this community 🙏🏻

When I got my SL2 I already had EF lenses. I have a Rebel G (film) and a Rebel XTI that use EF lenses. I also like how the SL2 can shoot from the screen or the shutter button. I also set up back button focus.

You need a million subs. This has been one of the best reviews and comparisons with the M50. I have a bunch of cameras (T1i, 5d, T3, T7i, and G16) but I wanted something more compact than my DSLRs but with better quality photos than my G16. This was super helpful and I think I'm going to pick up a M50.

I don't have the G7XMKII anymore so I can't do that. The image quality will be better on the M50, plus it will have a fully articulating screen, audio input, better autofocus. Hope this helps.

OMG........ You just made my day. I´ve watched a lot of videoes to get to this. I´m a Canon-fanboy and I have about 6 Canon-cameras to choose from. Naroved it down pretty much to the M50 and the 200D. And now I just watched your video. You just made my choise here - I have to get the 200D now because I want super stillpicture performance and nice video performance. After getting 30k subscribers from my first year YouTubing, I am finally making the upgrade from iPhone for filming to Camera. The SL2 is sounds good! This was easy. "SYSTEM"! Comparison is fun, but for me the SL-2 is ready out of the box for all that Canon Glass. Also it is cheaper so you can invest more in glass. A no brainer. Also the M50 is too small. I hated how it fit in my hand. Also the stupid 4K UHD crop. Why Canon??? I could have forgiven the size of the body and handling, but as always Canon just being stupid on protecting Cinema Line Pro cameras. Also since the M50 was so small how was it handling the bigger lenses with an adapter on top of that. The SL-2 is small already, and big lenses are already fun on that. So the winner for me was the SL-2. 1080P is just fine. Still have Dual Pixel AF, Flip Screen, I use an external Audio Recorder so the only so so Mic Preamplifiers of the SL-2 are a non factor. Stills both rock. EVF is nice vs. the tunnel vision SL-2 Viewfinder. But I am doing video more than stills.So low price, killer AF, a lens system the biggest in the business, and terrific value scream SL-2. Only one other feature that would make the SL-2 perfect, a Headphone output, but hey costs, and heat of the OP Amp needed and space keep the SL-2 from getting one.

Outstanding insight Vincent. I think for vloggers who don’t need 4K, the small form factor of the M50 is nice. If you end up getting the 22mm 20 is really nice. DPAF is just my favorite. I just got the EOS R and am curious to see where it fits in the lineup.

I agree. I thought the M50 would be better because of it's size. It ended up being the reason I just sold my M50 and bought a refurbished SL2.

@@bringthestrings personally I love the SL2--it's small and light weight enough to carry anywhere yet big enough to be able to grip--that was my biggest complaint about the M50---it was so small it was actually more uncomfortable than the bigger SL2! And even though the M50 has a newer processor, it has the same sensor size as the SL2. I got mine from Canon, refurbished with the 18-55 mm kit lens for $399--which is a steal! Refurbs from Canon are a great way to save money--I've bought several items and you can't tell the difference between new and refurb. Warranty is the same too.

Thanks for this video! I sold my 80D when money got tight and now that things are better i’m looking for a replacement that isn’t quite as expensive and not so big so i’ll carry it more often. Subbed.

What a great video! Thank you so much! As someone who is fairly new to the youtube world with my own channel I can appreciate a good youtuber. Nice work! Now I have to choose between the two. I have experience with DSLR and appreciate still photography but also need something to help me step up production quality of my youtube channel. I was all in with the M50 before I watched this video. I guess I have a little more research to do. Thanks again!

I joined YT in 2010 but I only hosted a few videos of my saltwater reef tank. I started this about 2 years ago and I was doing some testing to see what works and now I'm implementing. Thank you so much for the encouraging words - I'm super grateful!

Great review and excellent presentation. I have a Panasonic G85 but miss my old Cannon so have been considering a new one. I feel like my g85 is good enough for any videoing that I do but want a better autofocus for photography. Nothing super heavy though...so this SL2 appeals to me. Thanks for the review!

Thanks so much. I did it for a few reasons. First, lighting, it was challenging to keep consistent. Second, audio. Those are noise dampening. I may still bring the windows back when it’s snowing and overcast! Thanks for watching and being part of the community.

Interesting comparison, Sagi. I have not used the SL2 but have to tell you it was your orig review back in May that got me started looking at the M50. I explored a little further and decided to order a used one, bundled with some accessories and lenses on Ebay. I have not regretted my purchase of the M50 and, in its small and light form function, it is just a perfect camera for hiking. When I first opened the pkg and looked at the M50, I took it out of the box and held it in my hand. When looking at the M50 in a video review, you don't realize just how small this body is. We're talking extremely small here, perfect for hiking. I've paired my M50 with Peak Design's Capture clip and shell, making it easy to attach to my front backpack strap and cover when raining. Perfect set up for trail use. The photos it takes are tack sharp, surprising for such a small camera and the hot shoe allows you to use the high end Canon speedlites, when necessary. If I had to fault the M50, it's the EVF which is great but it's also a hindrance, because while taking a series of photos your viewfinder and, in fact the LCD screen are blacked out momentarily by the last photo taken, hindering you from composing your next shot because you can't see what you are trying to photograph, until that last photo taken disappears from view. It's like someone is blocking the lens with something while you are trying to focus. Perhaps, there is a workaround for this or a way to disable last photo from displaying for a few seconds. You can still take a photo but just can't see what you are photographing. Other than this, I love the M50. As mentioned earlier, thx to your orig review of same I bit the bullet and bought one. The photos from it are amazing and have allowed me to place my Canon 7D, gen one, on the bookshelf, where it is now collecting dust. As mentioned in past replies I've made on your videos, I love them but hate them at the same time because they always make me want whatever it is you are reviewing, causing me to spend more money, once again. Darn your time. It's just a good thing for me that you are not posting videos daily. LOL.

Hi, great video, it has very good and easy to understand information for persons that are just starting like me, makes it easier to choose from these 2 cameras, I want to start to take better pics for food business, and eventually start with food videos as well, for what i watched, i think my best choice would be the M50. Hope I' m making the right choice.

Hey man! Thanks for this video! just what i needed. I got a 80d and use it for my business.. it does the job well, but it can get heavy if i wanna use it for some fun stuff and just carry it around. But the battery life is epic! so when you mention the features on the SL2, i think i gotta go with that one... and for that price.. wow!
