This has been the case for years now with mirrorless. But the reason photographers continue to buy new gear is because they are gear heads and not photographers (and that’s okay for some).

I use a R6II for photographing sports, previously I used a 1Dxs as my main cameras. I use an older EF IS 400/2.8 with a 1.4 converter. The focus is incredible it was like having a new lens. I thought it was a bit slow focusing in low light but after the last firmware update I have no issues in low light. I was shooting a soccer match at ISO800 and was able to do moderate cropping with no noticeable image degradation.

@@alex_nita you can configure a button if you want, but there's an automatic switch with optical sensor from display to viewfinder and back, as soon as you get the camera to your eye, so no real need to have a dedicated button.

@@ritrattoaziendale configuring a button for this seams like a 3rd hand solution. I upgraded from the R6 to the R6 mk II when it was released as I was able to get a good trade in. In fact the camera store admitted they made a mistake in my advantage but they couldn't decline the offer anymore at that point 😅. For me the R6 mk ii more or less fixed most of the R6's shortcomings - much better thermal behavior, custom modes for video, much better rolling shutter behavior, usb-c power supply while the camera is on. And then adds some features, of which I most appreciate the multi-fuction hotshoe on which I have mounted the DM-E1D mic.

Thanks for your review of the R6II. It‘s really good, but I think that you seriously undersold the battery life. I‘ve been using 2 of these bodies for several months now for extensive hybrid wedding shooting and it is incredibly hard to drain the battery. For a mirrorless body at this size the battery life is unmatched.

Agreed! With the original R6 I can shoot 1800/2000 pictures (single shots, not burst) before the battery drains out (not only recent LP-E6NH, but also old LP-E6 I have since 5D II days); of course I use eco mode, and turn off camera when I don't need it, I'm long time Canon user since film days and learnt how to save a battery.

  • @likefunbutnot

My knock on the R6ii vs the R6 is actually that the original R6 seems to handle low light better. I shoot in nightclubs and concert venues where I have zero control over light. The extra 4MP aren't worth losing image quality when I'm regularly shooting at 25k ISO. As a left handed person, I'm also annoyed that they moved the power dial to the already extremely crowded right side of the body. Hopefully they'll fix that in the R6iii.

Naw. If you downsize the R6 II file to match the R6, noise is basically identical. And as is, the R6 II is ridiculously clean at high ISOs.... and AI noise reduction built into software like Adobe is so good, my ISO12800 shots now look like ISO200 from cameras just last generation. Noise is not an issue anymore for photos.

I consider this camera to be a legendary sleeper. It's just so much camera for the price. Thr output most of all is exquisite with more details and saturation level than previous Cameras. Probably a redesigned filtering allowed for that(at the cost of some moirethat I personally don't mind). Also, the battery is severely underrated and I wonder why Canon rate it so low. While keping the camera in airplane mode, I am able to take 1500 easily in a single charge, sometimes even more than that. That is better than my previous 6d mark2 which was a dslr with fewer electronics.

Yeah man! Even the Canon ambassadors slept on this... Even Pete McK just had a preview of the camera and never talked about it again. DXO NEVER did a test of the R6 II, but they did one for the R8. Even this channel did the R8 review and not the R6 II. THe R6 II has been the best bang for the buck full frame hybrid for the past nearly 2 years, better than the a7iv , better than the S5II. In fact, it's probably better than the z6III because that camera's AF abilities still lag behind the R6 II by a fair margin (my friend owns both).

Really enjoy this camera for sports/action photography. The smaller MP sensor results in smaller files to write/read/store. But the photo quality is still very sharp for web and smaller print usage. I've even printed some larger posters with decent results. The ability to hit nice fast bursts speeds help to lock in the action you're trying to capture. The AF was a huge upgrade over the older R6, too. This being another strong aspect for sports photography with vastly improved face tracking processing. The low-light photography for indoor shoots is also very good. I don't see a major difference with the R5 like some claim, but the R3 is where the true pros go when the tool is your life blood. Aside from those two aspects much of the camera is the same in terms of photos.

And I mean seriously freeze. I need to completely remove the battery to unfreeze them and restart. Workflow wise though, this thing is a BEAST for hybrid shooting. The dedicated switch for still/video is perfect. It creates beautiful work and handles very nicely. I did find my R6 bodies more dependable though.

@jordanmitchell1433 Uh, how about lens selection? People always said the lens selection is the most important part, have you all suddenly forgotten that? Nikon Z beats the crap out of RF mount in that regard. RF basically has nothing in-between cheapish 3.5-6.3 zooms and $2500 2.8 zooms, while Nikon has several good options like Tamron 28-75 2.8 G2. The Nikon S 1.8 prime selection is also miles ahead. This is how Canon responded regarding lens selection: "So basically, the reason why we have not been collaborating or partnering with a third party is because of our business strategy. Our business strategy says that we are not going to partner with a third party. And the reason why we came up with that strategy is because of the business that we are doing. So our business is that if we have some technology, we try to lock them up inside of our company and try to make a profit out of that. That’s the basis of our business” I would never advise anyone to buy into a company that so openly admits to "biting the hand that feeds" instead of trying to create a win-win situation for both them and the customer. Even APPLE are more open than that. Yea Canon make great products, but they always try to screw you over in some way.

@@fotografalexandernikolis sure, for now Canon might not have the same lens selection, but if we’re going off lens selection alone you end up placing Sony at the top. @@jordanmitchell1433 We don't know for certain if Canon will ever allow 3rd party FF lenses, but Nikon and Sony do. And it doesn't change the fact that recommending Canon to beginners like you say you do is honestly extremely stupid at this point. Let's start with the primes: Canon's RF 50 1.8 is honestly hot garbage, with the same optical performance as the 20 year old EF version, while there's no other option until the sky-high expensive 1.2. Meanwhile Nikon's Z 50 1.8 is barely more expensive while having literally Zeiss Otus class optical performance. For kit zooms, Nikon has the excellent 24-70/4, while Canon's only offerings are only f/4.0-7.1 and the like. Canon's f/4 lenses like 14-35 and 24-105 are also significantly more expensive than Nikon's equivalents that are optically best in class. All of this speaks volumes about how Canon treats beginners or those on a budget as expendable who they don't WANT to enjoy decently priced gear, while Nikon offers complete packages with much less optical compromises at sometimes even better prices than Canon. And no, adapter options are not an excuse for Canon. Recommending a Canon mirrorless only makes sense for anyone who's already invested. For beginners that are buying their first mirrorless camera, recommending Canon is honestly just dumb, sorry. The fact that Canon fanboys have done a complete 180° from "Canon's large EF selection is their strongest point!" to "if you can't do with RF's limited and overpriced lens selection, sucks for you!" and pretending like lens selection is a non-issue like you did just speaks volumes about how you're grasping for air to defend their anti-consumer strategy.

It drives me nuts on my Eos R - you can scroll back and forth the ISO values with the ring, but to select AUTO you have to flip the screen open and find a way to adjust ISO there.... If this is the case with R6II - I swear to God, I will by a Pentax instead.

  • @Mariner1460

    @Mariner1460

Maybe not exactly what you want, but there are a couple of ways to do this. First, you can set the camera to revert to auto ISO after the metering timer expires, and if you don’t want to wait, just tap the Q button or menu button or whatever twice to cancel the timer and go right back to auto ISO. And/or, you can program a button to bring up ISO in the viewfinder and then use the control ring to dial it all the back down to AUTO. If that won’t work for you, I see a Pentax in your future. So sorry. p.s. you can also use the M-Fn button to brig up ISO and then dial it to auto.

I almost always shoot with 2 bodies, and had been using the OG R and the R6ii. The R6ii is so much better, and with the current $500 rebate, it was a no-brainer to switch to 2xR6ii. The upgrades to the focus system are simply amazing. I still get great pictures with the R, and do like the extra pixels, but with the R6ii, I can work much faster and get more keepers.

No one talks about this for some reason, but this camera has one crippling feature: external monitors render the touchscreen useless. If you choose to use to use dual output, you cannot internally record. If you choose to use your monitor, you LOSE all touchscreen functionality. If you’re using the autofocus and it loses the subject for any reason, you won’t be able to fix it. It’s SUPER frustrating that such a basic feature is left out. If you don’t care about rigging it out, this is the camera for you.

IBIS wobble in video is most prominent in vlog style walking shots (head shots like your examples). Is that correct? For video, if my greatest interest is nicely controlled forward facing (not vlog) handheld shots with pans, and maybe some forward walking, how wobbly can I expect it to be compared to a camera without IBIS? I am trying not to use a gimbal. It seems maybe not as bad as people are making it out to be in some alarmist reviews? @@alex_nita Kindergarten or not, that’s exactly how Canon mirrorless cameras work. You do not need to press any button to get live view like you do on DSLRs. Just raise the camera, as you say, and the LCD will be on. Snap away! If the LCD timed out (user configurable), then a shutter half press will instantly turn it back on. For street, maybe you want to be more discreet and not have the LCD auto on all the time? My toddler mind can dig that. Then you would have to go the route of programming a button (or flip the screen from closed to open.) Just trying to be helpful. 😃. If you haven’t tried mirrorless, yet, you might want to have a look. There are many other changes that may benefit your photography and make giving up just one button worth it. Happy shooting! Edit: I was curious how this worked on my DSLR; so, I dusted off the old 1Ds Mark III (a pretty decent camera in its day 😄). On that camera, the Set button is used to turn on live view. I then grabbed the R6ii, turned off EVF/LCD auto switching, configured the Set button to swap them (the set button is otherwise useless during shooting), and whammo, it works exactly the same now. Nice. I hope that helps.

Yes, Canon does reserve the top LCD only for it's top models, DSLR and mirrorless. It might be a cost thing, but since the top LCD is a lot less important now on mirrorless than it was for DSLRs, I suspect it's mostly there to further distinguish camera tiers feature-wise. I have DSLRs and Mirrorless bodies with and without the top screen. On the DSLR, it's awesome--lots of useful information all in one spot. Exposure, focus, and drive modes are all managed through that screen and aren't available anywhere else. On the R series cameras, everything on the top screen is also available on the back LCD and in the EVF. Given that, I prefer having a PASM dial on the top plate. It's way faster to switch modes (twist, done) than the button/wheel/LCD combo (press, scroll, scroll, scroll, press).
