Canon EOS R5C Battery Hack || R5C handheld rig || External battery for R5C

Many thanks for taking the time out to watch this video. I have found out that you can greatly improve the Canon r5c battery life in a video mode by going into a playback mode when you are not recording without turning off the camera. By doing so the camera will stop using energy to power the lens motor, turn off the fan, and the censor. Unfortunately, if you don't go into playback mode and leave the camera on standby in video mode while you are not recording, the camera will keep using the same energy/power as it does while recording and it will deplete the battery very fast.
If you don't want to use an external battery to extend the recording time on the Canon R5c then the best way is to use the Canon Battery Grip amzn.to/3zoSANy . This is the same battery grip used for Canon R5 and R6.
For rigging the camera, I have used the small rig old version case but newer versions of the R5, R5C and R6 case will work perfectly for this rig as well amzn.to/3bvmtUk . I have used the small rig power bank holder/clamp amzn.to/3Jw61jp to install the external battery on the cage. The battery I have used is manufactured by Charmast amzn.to/3vDpMQe . This battery is half the price of Ankor's PD power bank and has 3000mAh of more capacity. This battery will give you solid 6-8 hours of recording time depending on your recording mode.
I have also installed Ninja V plus amzn.to/3oQ3Xt4 on the cage using the small rig monitor mount amzn.to/3SufWtJ . Lastly, an excellent addition to this rig is the small rig wooden handle amzn.to/3OX9AAb . Using a handle makes handheld footage very stable and makes the whole rig feel very stable.

thank you for the tips! Great video :) One quick question: you mention that the PD pack (when set on top) will not block any access. Does that also mean that the screen can freely rotate the 180 degrees without hitting the battery type-c cable? On my EOSr, that cable gets in the way and prevents the screen to flip, which is such a pain when I shoot myself...

PD pack will block the top small screen vision but all buttons on the top can are still accessed. USB cable will block the main screen rotation but screen can be flipped in and out. Better is to adjust the screen to the desired position and then plugin usb c cable.

Hello. Can you please try to mount the power bank on top of the smallrig wooden handle and tell me if it works? I need to put a Canon mike on the hot shoe, a dji wireless on the cold shoe, where your monitor is, and also a palm size light somewhere. Thanks!

Hi, unfortunately battery holder can’t be installed on the wooden handle directly because of the narrow screw positioning on the battery holder. Wooden handle has cold shoe and couple of screw holes, there might be another accessory available from small rig that might help installing battery holder on the top of wooden handle.

Awesome video, bro! How does the Nikon Z9 compare to this entire setup? As per my research, Z9 don't need any powerbanks and external recorders and won't overheat despite having no fan. R5C can't power lens in 8k, unlike Z9. Also, Z9's battery lasts a lot longer than R5C's. Don't you think Z9 is an all-in-one solution as opposed to R5C? Why should one buy R5c over the Nikon Z9?

Many thanks 😊. I have used my friend's Z9 a couple of times, and I have come across two major issues. Z9 auto focus is not as good as r5c, especially in photo mode when animal AF is enabled. Secondly, that camera is massive and weighs a lot. I think more than double the R5c means that you are carrying a rig all the time. In the case of R5C, you at least have an option to use the camera without an external battery, and form factor becomes much smaller and lighter compared to z9. Otherwise, z9 is a phenomenonal camera. I think at the end of the day, it comes to what echo system you are in. If you have a lot of rf glass, then it doesn't make any sense switching to Z mount system.

@@EhtashamAnwar I concur with your viewpoint. Indeed, the camera (Z9) is massive. Firmware 3.0 did improve the autofocus, but still not at par with R5C.

There is a USB C port along with micro hdmi on the side of the camera
Please send your findings into Canon. Hopefully we will get an update that will resolve this issue.

All Cinema cameras over samples, even when using the menus. The only time it does not over sample, is in the “media” mode. That’s why you use less power. Fan and lens does not use that much power.
Hello which peak deign strap are you using I bought R5C few days back eos utility 3 crashes after few clicks everytime . my mac os is ventura 13.6.1. R5C has latest firmware .i am in a middle of product shoot every time i have to restart MacBook. no other application is running . i even re installed restarted then used it crashes. i am afraid if i update my mac is there a stable eos3 update but i have seen other people post complain. read post even in latest mac sonoma eos3 crashes my MacBook M1 14inch

Hi, it’s a peak design sling strap. Non of the canon apps good enough to rely on professionally in my opinion. I just downloaded canon raw processing plugins for Final Cut Pro on my Mac. Without those plugins your MacBook will not be able to process the raw and h265 files in Final Cut Pro or any other editing software. I think you haven’t downloaded plugins from canon website and this is a reason your MacBook is crashing

i am only taking about the photography part to tether camera for image product photography. i haven't even touched the video part yet . yes i saw fcp plugins while updating firmware. i have to understand and download them i am totally a newbie in video @@EhtashamAnwar
Does the R5c have 4k 60fps all-i? I believe the R5 only has 4k all-i in 30fps.

R5c can record 60fps in all-i and long gop both. It is also down scaled from 8k not line skipped like on R5. Basically quality is same in 30 and 60fps. Only line skipped mode on R5C is 120fps slow motion mode.

Depends on the Gimble. Definitely not gonna work on smaller less powerful gimbals.

I saw a video where a guy mounted the power bank under the gimbal plate using those command strips that you use to hang pictures to the wall. Looked stable and minimal.
