Is it good for astrophotography like nebula, galaxies, planets and stars.
Thank you for making such thoughtful, in-depth videos. I really appreciate the time and effort you put in to help us all make purchasing decisions.
This is like the "tell me the EF-M mount is dead without telling me the EF-M mount is dead camera". However, I do like how Canon is keeping their lineup clean and logical this time with price to feature ratios across all models being justifiable and not feeling like things are being artificially left out for the sake of forced market segmentation.

I wish Canon would either produce some high quality RF-s lenses, or open up the mount to third party makers to do it for them. Good bodies, weak lenses.
Looks like a nice upgrade over the M50. Glad to see they used the LP-E17 instead of holding onto the LP-E12. It was odd how they split battery types in EF-M considering how close in size the two batteries are.

I have a M50 and I am thinking of upgrading, but I don't personally think it is worth so much money. I'd rather go for a RP.
Great review Gordon, thank you. The R50 looks like a great travel / budget-friendly option that will do well for Canon.
I like it as a “modern” addition to my 5D classic. Lovely form factor, and good enough as a basic travel camera.
I've been a Canon fan going back to the film days then the T3i hooked me on digital. I didn't have money or a major need to upgrade till the m50 and SL3 came along. I ultimately settled on the SL3 mainly because it used EF and EFS lenses which I already had and it had clean hdmi out. It wasn't mirrorless but other than that the two were almost identical in faults and features. Shortly after my purchase the R series came out and the announcement that Canon was doing away with DSLRs and their primary lens system going forward would be the new R-mount. I immediately regretted going Canon with my previous purchase and vowed never to buy Canon again. Since Sony came out with the EV-10 it's been on my wish list and my recommendation for an entry-level or budget interchangeable lens camera. I did purchase the ZV-1 and it is the camera I take everwhere but the 24-70 while good is a limitation where I often have to take my SL3 along to compensate for. The R50 has a lot of promise and fixes the issues I had with the M50 and SL3. I wish it were closer to the M50's price point but at least I can adapt my existing EF and EFS lenses with fewer issues than adapting them to Sony's E-mount. I might consider it though as I like Canon colors over all compared to Sony. While Canon generally produces a better overall picture to my eye, Sony cameras at similar price points tend to offer more features. What I'll end up doing is comparing the EV-10 to the R50. Whichever I choose will be my brand choice and recommendation for a long time to come.
Now deciding between the R50 vs the ZV E10
Great all round review. I have an R5 with some good lenses, but wanted something to throw over my shoulder for everyday just out and about. This will now be the R50 kit, acknowledging it isn't the R5 and knowing it is for quick snap fun. Cheers.
I preordered the R50 as a replacement for my SL2/200D, and as a smaller companion to my RP. For kayaking and outdoor activities I like to have a small & light kit. As much as I've liked the SL2, the R50 is the camera I've been waiting for, better and smaller.

@@pilarpsp127 As it turned out, an acquaintance suggested to me that the R10 was really the camera I wanted and when I went to a store and held it I realized that she was right. Only VERY slightly larger than the SL2 but with a level of functionality more comparable to a 90D. I highly prize small size & low weight, so for me to go for the R10 instead of the R50, you know it has to be delivering a lot more functionality. It has been the perfect complement to my RP. I have to admit that the R10 outshines the RP in some ways. I'd urge you to compare them both in hand and see what feels right for this role for you.

Thanks for the thoughtful (as always) review! Just seen the pricing in Germany, 830 EUR - to high for a fast decision but I see the big advantages in video compared to the M50/ii and it might be a great companion to the R7 (using it with 100-400 EF ii) for wide angle if I will switch to 4k ...

Nice review! Glad you compared it with the M50 because I was trying to see if there were compelling enough reasons to get an R50. Not sure I was convinced to do that, given the capabilities of the M50 and the smaller lenses associated with that. I sure wish that Canon would come out with an M50 iii. I'm thinking if the R50 doesn't sell like the M50 did, that Canon just may come out with an M50 Mark III, although many photography channels have been insisting the M line is done. While I will miss the the very handy size of my M kit for hiking and "grab and go", it looks like the R50 and RF-S lenses are at least trying to be a bit smaller than the rest of the R-line. I was getting worried that I would have to buy into a different manufacturer and start all over with new lenses. Now, if only my M lenses would adapt, that would be great, but I'll console myself with the thought that my EF and Rf lenses will work.
Hi Gordon, great video as always. It is worth noting that the camera can shoot in HDR PQ, which I personally think may be more beneficial than log. Once converted in the edit it is often cleaner than the LOG files which is pretty cool. I have the R7 and often shoot HDR PQ instead now.

Higher full frame resolution sensors require far more processing power, it’s not that hard to understand. If you want 4K 60p with a 40mp full frame sensor and no crop it will cost you a pretty penny for sure. Hello Gordon, Great video and informative. Quick question, I currently use a Canon T3i still and works great for the simple recordings I am doing but looking to step up. Most of my recordings are stationary and on a tripod. I use the RODE Wireless GO II for audio. Does the 18-45mm lens that comes with the R50 give you better range and quality than the EFS 18-55 that I have been using with my T3i? Also I would be buying an adapter to use my EF lens with the new R50. Is there anything I should be concerned about as I see different post of this site about problems. Any other additional info you have would be great. Thanks Gordon for all you do.
@cameralabs
Жыл бұрын
Hi Vincent, the R50 and your T3i have the same physical size sensor, so the range would be the same if the lens has the same focal length. So the 18-45 will match your 18-55 at the wide-end, but not get quite as close. What sort of step-up are you looking for on the camera, as the R50 will only be a mild improvement.
@VincentHIvory

@@cameralabs Wow!! Surprised since I have had my T3ki for many years. So really looking for mainly overcoming the 30 mins file limit. When I shoot now I only get 12 mins recording time which causes me to have to stitch 6 clips together with a few seconds loss between each making the edit more cumbersome. Will the 55-210 lens for the R50 get me in closer and improve far away speakers? Any other ways the improvement may only be mild? Would you simply recommend buying the EF to RF adapter and using my Nifty 50 lens and the 18-55 lens or would you say get the R50 and the 18-45 and 55-210 lens with the R50 body? Thanks.

The issue with the R50 is the lack of lenses … Canon doesn’t have a camera problem, they have a lens problem. Yes you can use adapters but that can be quite a pain in the butt. They would be doing a lot more business if they followed Sony e-Mount lead.
So cute!
seems silly to go with the RF mount on the small body, the efm mount was a better match, if you wanted a small system the efm lenses were great, now you have to use rf lenses which will soon become big carry with three where as the efm lenses took up alot less space and yes i use the ef ef-s lenses as well on the M50, and how much of the autofocus problems with the higher end RF bodies does the R50 have using sigma ef ef-s lenses

I suspect before long they will have RFS equivalents of all the EFM lenses. BUT the big question is whether they'll develop it beyond those. I hope so.
Unfortunately there’s zero upgrade case from a Nikon Z50/ Z30/ ZFC. No 60fps 4k or IBIS which are the things consumers want. Heck they haven’t even put IBIS in the R8. Only upgrade case for me now is the Sonys, and I hate the menus, one of the full frame cameras or more likely Lumix S5ii which has everything consumers need apart from the large form factor. There’s a massive market for S5ii features in a small APS- C body.
@cameralabs

Thing is, if you put S5 II features in an APSC body, you get something like a Fujifilm XT5 / XH2, with a price that overlaps many full-framers. Sony also tried with the A6500 and A6600 but they were too expensive too vs their entry-level or older full-frame options.

True, but I mention the EF as the cheapest option, assuming of course you already have the EF to EOS R adapter.
Canon have dropped the ball in a way. They need to release a aps-c body aimed at more pro users who need a battery grip. I would have ordered one for the sports I shoot if it had been made available with a BG, which is practically mandatory for the way we shoot. Their line up is becoming stacked with practically every type of mirrorless body aside from “pro” level crop sensor body.

The usual Canon marketing to attract diehard Canon local photography fans. I'm glad I have made the move to Fujifilm. Still sticking to my mid range Canon R body and a few RF L lenses though. If I owned the lower tier bodies like theCanon M50 or xxD bodies, I would have done a complete switch of camera systems by now. Canon has been uninspiring in their body and lens designs for APS-C cameras.

They need to lower it so it can still shoot videos in low light.
first, this should have been an update to the m62 form factor. The m62 now looks futuristic compared to this little thing. The second and core problem with this camera + RFS crop is that the lens selection is pretty much the worst in the industry. Canon has actually made their entry level lenses worse than its last generation. It's a damn shame. Canon has taken their marketing to the extremes and that these cheap cameras are proposed with really cheap low performing lenses (At least in terms of gathering light). That 24 to 50 is one of the most awful lenses I've ever seen produced in terms of range. That's just terrible for crop. Unless you can put some really good primes or ultrawides on this thing, then it just fails completely. For the most basic shooting it's going to be pretty much full auto ease of use in daylight. After that It will desperately need a tripod. The R8 I can understand. This camera tragically I just can't.
