    Wow, people keep teching this nonsense that crop factor affects luminosity. Obviously it doesn´t. You're simply registering a smaller area of the same image a FF camera would. To all newbies: crop factor IS NOT the same as an extender. An extender increases the size of the image circle and thus "dilutes" the light in a bigger area, so the images gets dimmer (an it reduces depth of field as well). Crop factor DOES NOT affect the light coming from the lens and so, even when the apparent magnification increases, the depth of field remains the same.

    f/5.6 is f/5.6 regardless of sensor size. Yes, your perspective/DOF will change but only if you think about it in most situations.

    It's nice to have the versatility of the zoom and the extra reach to 600mm, but in the end what ultimately led to my decision was the focusing speed of the cannon 400 mm. Now I'm leaning towards the Canon 100-400, but I need to rent it first.

    You're absolutely right about the 'Full-Time Manual Focus' ring, When i rented this lens some of my shots came out Blurry, i thought the lens was defective but later on i found out that my 'Finger' was touching the Focusing Ring before i took the shots. So, that was the only Complaint I had about this lens. Everything else is manageable like the lack of IS and Small Aperture...:)

    Hello, I would like to buy this lens and I don't quite understand this question of "Full-Time Manual Focus". Once you set the lens slider to "AF" and not "MF", the ring doesn't work I guess. Or do you mean that despite selecting "AF", the manual focus ring still works? That would be a real shame!

    I have an M50 MK ii and before watching this video along with a pro recommending this lense, I was certain about getting the Tamron 100-400. However, after seeing this I'm not so sure. Those images with your M50 combined with the Canon 400 f5.6 look awesome and because of how good the AF seems to work with the Canon, it'll be great for my surf and wildlife photography. I guess you probably recommend the Canon 400 f5.6 over the Tamron 100-400 for the M50 or M50 MK ii yeah?

  • @faspete2nd

    @faspete2nd

    It has been my experience that the speed of the AF is faster in the Canon 400. It is a good lens to have. Yes. I would recommend it if it's in your budget.

    F5.6 will remain f5.6 whatever the sensor size Its just the field of view that changes. A change in sensor size does not "physically" change the focal length. 400mm is still 400mm. The crop factor is only a reference of the "field of view". Of course unless you use a teleconverter, which can physically increasd the FL, then the f ratio will change as well. Thanks for the review

  • @faspete2nd

    @faspete2nd

    I thought you had to apply the crop factor to both aperture and focal length to get the full frame equivalent. So if I use the 400mm on a full frame camera at f5.6 and a 250mm on a APS-C camera at f5.6 I will get the same amount of blur in the background? Interesting. I always thought it would be different.

  • @guitarintune408

    @guitarintune408

    3 жыл бұрын

    Im speaking about the aperture itself being 5.6, and not about the background blur. The number 5.6 is still 5.6 either using full frame, crop, or even smaller sensors. If you use full frame on a 400mm f5.6 lens, the f ratio if 5.6 is constant even you use an apsc camera on the same 400mm f5.6 lens. Sensor size doesnt physically change the "focal length" it only changes the field of view.

  • @faspete2nd

    Now you have me thinking about this. If we break this down into quantitative and qualitative statements. Quantitatively a 400mm lens used at f 5.6 on full frame or APS-C camera are always going to be 400mm and f5.6 because those are physical measurements/attributes of the lens unchanged by the sensor size. Qualitatively if you use a 400mm f5.6 lens on a APS-C camera your perception of the image will resemble what you would see if you shot at 640mm f9 on a full frame camera. Is this right? Are you following my logic or am I way off?

    @@faspete2nd If you use 400mm f5.6 lens on an APS-C camera, it is like a cropped out middle part of a photo from a full-frame camera using 400mm f5.6. However, until yesterday, I used to believe that 400mm lens turns to 640mm focal length on APS-C cameras. In this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/pqqBwdRvgtWXYrg.html the guy explains the crop factor very nicely roughly in the middle of the video. Anyway, your video about Canon EF 400mm is great. I am considering buying this lens. But I am still not 100 % sure whether I should really buy it, or not.

    This lens works best on a bright sunny day. A Canon 1.4 Extender works well on this lens unless you are shooting very fast birds. ( Bufflehead Ducks fly like a cruise missile! ) The extender tends to slightly slow down the auto focus.

  • @faspete2nd

    @faspete2nd

    I'm shooting with the Canon M50 so using the 1.4 extender will make it tough to track birds using the 400mm. That would put me at almost 900mm.

    Ok... firstly this lens is not weather sealed, it has some dust and moisture resistance but it's not weather sealed. Secondly mounting it on a crop body doesn't change the aperture, that's a myth I'm getting fed up of hearing people perpetuate. As for your subject seperaio "example" using the bird, if you're shooting at the angle you were using the even a high end 600mm f4 on a FF body the background would still be in focus, that's part of the reason wildlife photographers like to be on eye level, it's a lot easier to throw out the background even with only a couple of feet seperating the subject and background.
