I got 3 out of 3 right. Being an R6 shooter for almost a year now, it was really easy to guess which camera was which. The lower dynamic range and especially the IBIS wobbles made it stick out to me. Nonetheless, the R6 is still an incredible value and I have zero regrets on the purchase. It has served me very well in both client videos and photos. It’s truly in a great sweet spot in price vs what you get overall for someone who wants to do both photo and video. I’ve been eyeing the C70 ever since it’s release. As someone who does tons of run and gun, the internal NDs, long battery life, ergonomics alone make it worth it for me.

I bought the R6 because of the price. Haven't disappointmented me yet. Awesome camera! Great video! Well-presented!

yes, for me there is a noticeable difference but I think is most of a color matching difference instead of a file difference. The clips with the r6 were more contrasty that the clips with the c70 but with more time in color grading u should not tell which is which

I thought I was one of the few people that was genuinely looking to upgrade and was comparing the R6 with the C70 as my choices. I was looking for a new hybrid style body and feel the R6 offers the best value. but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on the C70 in this upgrade cycle. What really surprised me with you examples near the start was how well preserved the highlights were on the R6, specifically the blue of the sky and light in the clouds. I called it the opposite way around. We already have an EVA1 here for the more filmmaking/A Cam bits, but like you I'm considering the R6 for the 'run n gun' Shooting. Actually pretty easy to tell the difference. I have an R6. the begging cuts - once i mention this people will see it. you can see the IBIS wobble in the clouds - so R6. So wide angle wobble something you have to deal with if not using a gimbal. Your studio color grade looks spot on. appreciate the video. -Mark

Thank you Chung! 🙏🏻 In the R6, you can’t set custom video presets unfortunately 😢 only photo. I exposure using the histogram and zebras. Usually spot on or 1 stop over depending on what I’m doing. Yeah I used c log. 🙏🏻 thanks for watching

I was wrong in the first footage. and I think the dynamic range of C70 is slightly better.

I actually came back to this video to see the R6 / C70 comparison and what’s really struck me is the quality of the 4k, 10-Bit, 4-2-2 on the R! Holy crap that’s a good looking image. Really prefer the colour science to the R6 - so neutral - and even though the DR won’t be as good on the R, for headshots under studio conditions where you can dial that in, who cares? I just can’t get there on the R6 for video Sam lol…Gonna hang on to my R’s (got 2 for multicam longform) and wait for the R3. I’ll be spending a bit more I know - more than a bit more probably. But hoping for no recording time limits. Cheers Sam!

Hey bro. Thanks for watching. I’m pleased this helped. The only thing to consider then, is the 4K crop on the R. If you have limited space in your room this could be an issue. Other than that. It’s amazing and I still use mine as you can see 🤩🎥📺

looking this one yr later when clog3 is available for R6...and im a happy R6 owner whose BMPCC 6K pro is much less in use.

Very interesting video! I m between R6 and C70 and I saw a lot of videos about C70, but I think you convinced me to buy the R6 now. :) I have 2 EOS R and I want full frame 4k, a better low light, IBIS, and of course a better AF. I have just 3 problem for a final decision and maybe you will help me: 1. I must to learn how to edit in Prores(maybe you will make a video with this), 2. with EOS R I can change very fast between C1, C2 in photo mode and after C1 and C2 in video mode, because I saved the settings (how is with R6?) and 3. the overheating in 4k 50f/s(90% I shoot in 50f/s). Hey bro. Thanks so much for watching! Unfortunately, the R6 doesn’t have custom buttons for video, only photo 😢 that made me sad too but I manage without. I convert my footage to prores using a custom made preset in Adobe media encoder. I will try and do a video soon but there are plenty of videos already if you can’t wait. And I haven’t had any issues with over heating so far but it might be different for you. You could always use the ninja v monitor for 50/60fps. Hope that helps 🙏🏻

C70 is more video centric. Both very different cameras. If you’re doing photos too I’d go for the R6

Glad you lije your R6. I was really put off by it because of its yelliwish colors in photos and video, and so I decided to stick with the R for now. Maybe I will go for R5 in the future. By the way, love your channel!!

Thanks for this great video mate. Yes, the R6 nails it. Added benefit on the R6 by the way (I know that you know, but it fell a bit under the table in the review): it makes amazing photos, whereas the C70 will "only" do video. Again, great to watch, keep it up!

I will say that I preferred the images from the R6 in each example over the C70 - it must be the full frame look that I find more aesthetically pleasing.

The R6 doesn't have CLOG2 so what if you need to match footage between an R6 and an C70 or R5C?

When you convert the R6 video to ProRes what flavour do you use? HQ? LT? Would love a bit more insight on that. I've been thinking of doing the same but some of my projects can be 6 to 10 hours of footage and that can start to eat up hard drives pretty fast if its 422 HQ. How do you notice the computer performance?

Hi Tyler. To be honest, I’ve been using my ninja v more now so the footage is already prores and because of space, I just convert longer files from the camera or vlog footage to proxies and edit like that. The prores vlogs were just eating up hard drive space but the prores editing was so much better. I’ve since switched to PC cos I was still having issues with premiere. That’s sped things up soooooo much BUT I miss Apple so I’ll probably be back within the week but to a newer machine 😂 hope that answers your question... sort of 🙏🏻 thanks for watching. If you want to see more up to date R6 videos and my PC video check em out. It might help with some of the questions

100 % you killed it Blue R6 all the way for me but would love both can't tell the difference we made the right choice didn't we .... glad we did Blue and this one is next level we'll worth the hard work 💪plus I think the R6 footage of the sky is better or am I blind 😀

R6 has features no other camera has in it's form factor. So yeah it's a winner and I bought one. If I was going to pay the price of the c70 I would get a Komodo instead.

Totally agree about the R6. Despite a few faults when I was moving from Panasonic m43 I ended up deciding on Canon FF with the R6 and have very little regrets. Out of all the other FF cameras out there the R6 is the only option that has over sampled 4K 60p. The 60p is the same full sensor look as the 24p. I also love the colors out of the box and the AF is amazing. Not to mention the insane sensitivity. I also loved that it was a FF camera with 10bit 4:2:2 built in vs Sony who still at the time didn’t take 10bit seriously. I’m also a big fan of how Canon handles HDR PQ and allows for some stunning HDR video straight out of the box. I find HLG on many other cameras a bit of a joke. HDR is not for everyone yet but I do work with HDR and the R6 shoots some very impressive HDR up to 750 nits of brightness. I just dump it into FCP and edit like any other normal video and export as HDR PQ. I easily convert to SDR with the HDR Tools or just let KZread create a SDR version automatically. I love having video with punchy contrasts details and that extra dynamic range we typically only see when it’s flat log. HDR allows me to have a normal look and still see all the dynamic range the camera is capable of.

I hear professional call the grain on the cinema line of cameras "organic grain." I'm guessing for professional grading, they can make the noise and grain look better on the cinema line of cameras, where as the R6 looks better straight-out-of-camera. I'd say for 95% of us, the R6 is favorable. I will admit that I'm not professional enough to notice the "organic grain/noise" compared to the mirrorless cameras, so I'd prefer less noise/grain straight out of camera.

Is there also a 30 minute limit on pushing out video over hdmi? Or is the limit only on internal recording? For live events most people will anyhow use an external recorder I guess. Great comparison! Canon makes cameras with much better ergonomics and features for video but the image quality of the R6 is just better.

I’d be interested to here more about this. I have a Ninja V but haven’t used it with the R6 yet. I’m not 100% sure but I think you can only set the display to turn off after 30 mins (not disable turn off). I would love to be proved wrong about this though. Anyone have any experience with it?

R6. Is there a way to keep ON the 3x3 grid or electronic level while recording video? These stay on until the moment i press the record button, then disappear. My videos keep coming out with a tilted horizon. Thank you

Which lens do you have on the canon r6? Really impressed with the quality of the R6 considering it’s half the price of the c70

Great video. I got them all right but I actually wasn’t looking for the color (American no ‘u’ in my color haha) Clip 1: Camera B had more of the hand like feel to it keeping up with the basket Clip 2: Camera B I noticed was more stable, so I though of the IBIS in the R6 Clip 3: Camera A just got lucky part of being Irish I guess haha

Great video as always. Watched a few of yours recently because I’m considering getting the R6 to delve into video. Used canon almost 20 years now as a photographer but it seems a good hybrid option to try and transition with. The fact I’ve been using canon so long is the main reason I’ve not switched to Sony yet. Lenses and second camera etc. I’ve got a question though. How do you feel about the camera now? I know you’ve done videos on it since but now that the Sony a7 IV is out (Ish) are you tempted to switch or will you still stick with canon? Great camera work on those basketball shots too by the way, looked ace.

Hey. Thank you 🙏🏻 yeh I still love it to pieces. To be honest, I won’t be switching to a Sony. I’ve used one and although the specs are mind blowing, the image just isn’t what the Lumix S5 has to offer. At the moment I’m using a combination of Canon R6 (for ease of use and the fact I’m so familiar with it) and the Lumix S5 for my more “pro” looking stuff. I love the R6 and will use it for a long time. Great image, great AF when I need it and easy to use. Hope this helps. I’ve got some S5 videos if you need to see them

the second example was the most evident of the range...both you and the background were super visible...the first and 3rd example made it harder to guess (which i believe is your point....not enough of a difference to constitute double the price) but the difference was still spottable.

Great video! How do you transform the H265 into ProRes? I use Davinci Resolve Studio and use Proxy’s with the R6 Clog3 files. Though would like to try using ProRes, instead.

Well I usually shoot using the atomos ninja V which records prores BUT you can do it using Adobe media encoder or FCPX does it. I’m not sure about Davinci as I’ve never used it, I’m sorry. Thank you for watching 🙏🏻

I think you are not understanding what the C70 is. Yes it has some negatives, and not good for skateboard work, but the camera has better dynamic range and a filmic look. I am currently weighting up the R3 to the C70, there are pros and cons. The C70 is a much better pro video camera, especially for sound options. One of the big negatives for the C70 is the build quality is a bit so so compared to the hybrid cameras.

Hi. Yeah I shoot in c log. I find there’s so much less noise in “normal” c log. It’s my favourite because it’s low noise and super easy to colour grade. Thanks for watching. Hope this helps 🙏🏻🤩🎥

Sam - how do you find switching from photo to video on the R6. Ive seen a frw reviews one from Taylor Jackson that say its a bit of a slower process.

It’s super easy. Just switch the dial over to whichever mode you want to shoot in. The videos settings save automatically and you can set up custom settings for photo (but not video unfortunately) 😞

Your C70 footage grading looks off to me in the comparison videos. You did a good job grading the R6, but somehow you didnt nail the potential of the Clog2 10bit in the C70. That is just my feeling, i am a C70 owner and my friend owns an R6. R6 is an amazing camera tho especially for the price!

@@SamHolland nice video, but I’m confused by what you mean by harder to grade. C-Log2 is designed to be incredibly easy to grade. Download CLog2 LUT from Canon’s website. Import. Slap on LUT. That’s it! From there you can make your creative adjustments. Maybe you can clarify for me, does the R6 have CLog2?

Thank you for watching. It all depends what you’re going to be using the photos for. Print or digital. I’m not much of a photographer so the Nokia 3210 is good enough for me 😂

yes its a beast photo camera, its not only the megapixeld that decides how good is the quality, the eos r6 has the same sensor as the 1dxmiii,

I don't know about your low light test, I get cleaner darks out of my c70 than I ever did out my hybrids, and in the right settings with the DGO working in your favor it gets even better. That said, c70 isn't really a hybrid cam, as it is with all of the canon's cinema line, it does expect a certain amount of set support for it to perform it's best.

The 25,600 looks very impressive on the R6. But is it being helped a bit by KZread compression here?

@@SamHolland I'm very thankful to hear that. Forgive my imposition - you wouldn't happen to have the original clip of that shot at 25,6 for me to compare with something I've experienced with my R6 personally, would you? I would love to see it without the KZread adulteration.

The basketball clip was easiest b/c of the corner wobble on the R6. Standing still ones looked the same.

The C70 is noisier because the R6 has heavy noise reduction in camera, the C70 by default does not. But this also means the C70 will be more detailed and less mushy in low light, then you can do your noise reduction in post with much better results.

Was looking forward to this and you smashed it bro! Great comparison video! If I didn’t already feel confident in my R6, I definitely do now. I am, however, really intrigued by the 4 audio sources on the C70. It’d be great to have at least one back up source just incase, because you never know if something will go wrong. Nice, thorough video. I have both cameras so I was interested to hear your thoughts in a direct comparison. I was going to get an R5 but decided at the 11th hour to get the R6 and C70 instead. One of the big things for me which you didn’t mention here is overheating with the R6. It’s only happened to me once and I was only using the R6 as a C cam but it’s something which made me feel I couldn’t 100% trust it as a main camera on jobs where I’m shooting longer interviews etc. I mainly got the R6 for stills and it is superb in that department. That said, the R6 is definitely great for video still and the form factor is nice. The AF is superior to the C70 too!

I heard it’s hard to edit the footages on the computer

It’s not too bad. Most cameras that have come out recently are hard to edit because of the file sizes/codecs. If you use proxies or prores, you’re ok, as mentioned in the video. The C70 records proxies automatically if you want it to. Another video on the C70 tonight 🤩 Thank you for watching! 🙏🏻🎥

Man I have my eyes on the R6 as well but I'm unsure about the footage being only IPB and impossible to playback in Premiere, and also concerns with overheating when shooting long videos. I know it's supposed to be great if you're just shooting short bursts here and there, but for someone who will want to do that + potentially shoot long-form podcasts, it's making me think twice. Aaaahhh man!

I know what you mean about the longer recording. That’s what worries me but I film my videos and it takes hours and I’ve had no issues there. But you might be different to me. The R5 all i footage doesn’t play back either so the IPB isn’t the issue. Same with the Sony. I did another video and that doesn’t play back smoothly either. Proxies or converting to prores is needed 🙏🏻 thanks for watching

I think since I'm coming from a Canon 70D I've yet to step into this new "big boy" world of full frame, higher megabit codecs and bigger resolutions, so will need to re-think my entire workflow. If converting to pro-res or using proxies is simply the norm for everyone shooting at this level, then I guess that's the sacrifice I gotta make! Let's hope they release some firmware updates soon which will tip me over the edge, lol. Cheers Sam.

Yeah that’s what I thought at first when 4K became a thing. Now it’s just normal BUT apparently the new Apple M1 chip is supposedly really good for editing those files 😂 more money! Thanks again 🙏🏻🎥

With the M1 apple Chip and Premier = No Problem! i bought my first apple because of the M1. I use the Mini M1 only for editig in Premiere. You can play 2 streams of H265 10 bit log mode with correction on it and scrub like hell... it works. no proxies nessesary!

C70 dynamic range was much better. Overall, great video.

Is it true what they say about native RF lenses? I mean , is it true that you absolutely need native RF lenses in order to perform good in an R6 ?

No! I’ve used old vintage lenses worth £20 and you still get a great image. I think it means the performance is optimal with the RF lenses. Faster focus, better colours and contrast etc but there’s nothing wrong with other lenses. 🙏🏻

Hi Harry. The Sony seems great. Reasons why I went for the Canon: I already have RF lenses R6 is more affordable Has all the features I will need I’ve used Sony before but I prefer the Canon menus and ease of use. To be honest, I mainly use the Ninja V which records in prores BUT when using Premiere, I used Adobe Media Encoder. But now I use FCPX and you can just transcode files through there to prores easily. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏🏻

The r6 has very weak dynamic range. Not even close to c70.

@@maiigophotography Yeah I own the R6, and although people say the dynamic range isn't the best compared to the competition, I am having trouble finding the need for an extra 1-1.5 stops of dynamic range to where if I didn't have it, my work would be compromised. Lots of people talk about the extra dynamic range for their wedding videos, but trust me.... clients NEVER care. Also, it's not fair to compare the dynamic range of a cinema camera with a hybrid/mirrorless. A cinema camera will always edge out on dynamic range, as it is designed to shoot with a lower MP count and the camera itself will almost always be beefier (black magic pocket cinema is an exception, but then you lose the autofocus and ease of use). Compromises are everywhere, no matter what camera you look at.

Thanks mate! Good comparison. There is nothing like new "toys" and you look like the kid in the candy store. It is hard to choose. :-D I already have the C70 and I love it, but as we spoke about earlier on, why settle for less, if you can have the best of both worlds with the R6 as well. :-D
