    Very informative Grant. Like you, I wouldn't want to try using the extender with the 70-300L IS lens - the risk is too great that I would damage it. I have never tried it, but I suppose that if someone really wanted to try that option they could put an extension tube (of sufficient depth to allow clearance of the two glass elements) in between the camera body and the lens. They would loose a stop of light of course but in a push it may be an option.

I would also like to know how compares the to the ef 1.4 extender. please note I am asking about performance and their auto focusing ability and not the I-mag aspect.

    Interesting review. In your experience, how the 80d compares with respect to the 1d mark IV, when the combination extender 1.4x III and 100-400 II is used, in terms of af performance? From what I noticed the 1d mark IV slows down considerably, when the lens is strongly out of focus (even if the light is good), at 400mm (560 mm equivalent). Do you think that the 80d is better?

    Also the aperture value being a crop sensor is not an f/2.8, but it becomes an f/4.48 to start with.. plus adding the extender, the aperture reduces even more. However if there's enough light, it's still a good option rather than spending much more for a longer and brighter lens. Good video, thanks for showing & sharing!

    Tarun Agarwal I though so too at first. Then I've done some testing, and I've realised that it's not. The light gathering might be the same, but the effect on the images shows different. I've tested both full frame lenses and apsc specially built lenses, like the Tokina f/2.8 for Canon, and the depth of field or the bokeh, isn't comparable at all to the result you get on a full frame camera.

I understand that EF-S lenses do not work with Extenders. Is this correct?

    Hey Grant, I just recently bumped into your channel and am enjoying your really helpful content. I own an 80D myself and for my photography starting point I got myself a little range of lenses to cover everything from wide angle to telephoto. Currently I'm getting more and more into wildlife using the Tamron 70-300 vc usd. I like the lens for its great value for money as the images are decently sharp as a whole. But diving into wildlife I came across the need to crop more often and this is where the Tamron falls short very quickly (not that surprising at its price point). In order to grade up my gear, and seeing in your video that the 80D can handle autofocusing with an extender pretty well, I am considering a 70-200 2.8 + 1.4x extender to replace the Tamron. However, as money is always an issue I wanted to ask your opinion on the 3 choices I think I have (open for other suggestions): Canon 70-200 2.8 is mk i + canon 1.4x mk 3 (older lens, but good enough value for money?) Canon 70-200 2.8 is mk ii + " (quite the money to spend, but probably best quality?) Tamron 70-200 2.8 g2 + Tamron sp 1.4x (new lens with awesome quality at lower prize point, but how does it handle the extender and does the 80D still use all 45AF points with this combination? Also loss in autofocusing speed?) Thanks in advance, Tom LE: Would you recommend using a monopod for steadier images?

Most of the time the ambient light doesnt allow me to shoot a lot with apertures smaller than f5.6, 6.3 or f8 anyway, so it doesnt affect me much. If you shoot at smaller apertures a lot then it would be a consideration for sure

    Hi Marc, glad the video was helpful. So the 2x extender would really only be used on your EF 300 f4 I am guessing. I have not used that lens with a 2x extender in recent years nor on a modern Canon dslr body in recent years. So I don't have direct experience to draw from. I believe it would be effective if you where using your 80D in Live View to focus, and when using Live View on telephotos i get my better results with the camera on a tripod or on a very stable platform or support. I would expect that the image quality would be reasonable but not excellent. I would also only expect it to focus accurately and positively in bright or medium bright ambient light. I would not expect it would be a very good combination if the birds where moving around quickly and if you had lots of obstacles like vegetation etc making autofocus challenging. But if you where working in stable conditions and wished for documentation shots it could work. I would try to rent or borrow a 2x extender first if I could..

    Are you concerned with "perceived megapixels" concept I've seen at dxomark in their lens tests?

  • @grantatkinson8108

    @grantatkinson8108

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Drake, I am loosely familiar with DXO Mark but not the "Perceived Megapixels" measurement. In my own choice of cameras and lenses for the kind of photography that I do, I choose both the lens (with particular regard to light gathering capability - max aperture) and the camera as two parts of a system. If I am going to be photographing subjects that I expect will be active very early in the morning when ambient light is low, then I will try to choose a lens with the biggest aperture (for example I would pick the EF 400 f4 DO IS ii over the EF 100-400 f5.6 IS ii) and I would also choose a body with a full frame sensor for the better performance in that low light. If I expected to be photographing at midday, then ambient light would be bright, I would be happy with the 100-400 f5.6 IS ii. For fast action shooting, I find I get my best results when using cameras with large pixels, like the Canon 1DX Mark 2, 1DX and 5D Mark 3. I find I get better sharpness in my action images when I use these cameras with less pixels but larger ones. For slower moving subjects I am happy to use cameras with more megapixels or small megapixels like the 80D, 7D Mark 2 and 5DSR. I am not sure if this answers your question at all or adds to it :-)

    Hi Mark glad the videos where useful. I don't own the EF 400L f5.6 and cannot easily get hold of one, but according to Canon literature on the 80D that lens ought to be able to use viewfinder focusing when used with the latest 1.4X EF Extender with the limitation that only the centre AF point will be available. If you use Live View it might work differently but I don't know. As far as using the 80D with the EF 400 L f5.6 and extender, I should mention that I have not done that myself. My experience with using 1.4x extenders on Canon 400mm lenses is limited to the EF 100-400L f4.5-5.6 IS ii and with that combination, I was able to obtain reasonably good static images of subjects in bright light. I struggled with things that where moving fast with the focus being less accurate and slower than I was used to. Perhaps I could have done better if i perservered....

    Hi Grant, I really appreciate you hard work and your dedication to share your knowledge. I now own a canon 80d and I am looking into a good telephoto lens, potentially to make some income from my images in the near future (wildlife, landscapes, some portraits; all while traveling). I would highly appreciate your advice in what combination you think would suit better my needs, with a budget of 2000ish dollars. My thoughts: - canon 100-400mm Mark ii, with or without 1.4 extender - canon 70-200mm 2.8 version ii with 1.4 extender (I was considering this option due to my interest in portraits, however I feel for wildlife it would be not enough reach. I can always get another option for portraits, such as a prime. Portraits are not paramount at the moment as I am in New Zealand and want to explore the wildlife here). But still would like your opinion on this combination. - Sigma 150-600 C version (interesting price, not sure about its quality compared to the 100-400 and its size to travel and long hicks) - Tamron 150-600 G2 (same doubts as with the sigma) It looks like I have a preference towards canon's 100-400 but is its quality, versatility and value that much better than the Sigma and Tamron? Taking in account its shorter range. I hope all what I ask makes sense and is not too overwhelming. But I would really appreciate your opinion. Kind regards and keep on the good work 😊

    I don't know if you went for it already but I'm very happy to have gotten a used 100-400 mk2. From what I've seen, the white Canon lenses are much easier to sell and hold their value better than Tamron /Sigma or Canon EFS lenses. At the end, if you don't damage or lose your lens, the total cost of the lens is only the delta between purchase and resale. The image quality is just as I had expected but the stabilization just blew me away. Good luck on the decision.

I got some great sharp shots of a sparrow sitting on the top of a hedge. - though it was taken it good light. The 2x Extender gave me a minimum working aperture of F8, and with the 7DII meant I only had single centre spot focusing, which on a relatively static subject wan't a problem as I used the focus and recompose technique. Had the bird been in flight, I think it would have been more a of a challenge for the camera to acquire and lock focus with. I have had no problems using a 1.4 MKIII Extender for birds in flight shots using this combination. For me the 2x MKIII isn't as practical as a 1.4xMkIII but it's a useful addition to have in my kit. Given the choice between buying one or the other, the 1.4 would win. Hope this helps! Dave

    Thanks you Dave, very much appreciated. I am going to use it primarily on a 70 - 200 f2.8 so will still have quite a bit of light coming in. I was thinking of getting them both to minimise the loss of light when the 1.4 could be used. Thanks again. Gary.

    Thanks for the input Dave, very helpful and pretty much mirrors my experience with the 2x extender. I do find i get my best autofocus results using the 1dx or 1DX mk2, when I have a 2x extender in place...noticeably better with moving subjects than the 7Dmk2 or the 5dmk4/3 bodies. But still a bit limiting for fast action...:-)

    HI Pablo that will work quite effectively to get you to 400mm of actual focal length. All autofocus functions are available, the same as if you had a 100-400 mounted on the 7D Mark 2. I did find it to slow down the autofocus a bit but it did still work okay. For very challenging AF situations i found the 2 X converter could make it a bit harder to get focused properly, and it could sometimes 'hunt' back and forth a bit. But a fair number of people use that combination effectively.

    Have a Canon 7D Mark II with 400mm F5.6 and the new Canon 1.4x iii extender. Have mixed feelings. The above combination limits the AF at f8 to the single center AF point. That's not much of an issue when shooting wildlife in a busy background, since I normally shoot with the single center AF in such settings. Shooting handheld with the above combination has to large of a percentage of blurry shots. Using a monopod really helps. The thing is, the field of view at f8, for 400mm x 1.6 crop x 1.4 extender = 896mm seems to be to narrow, so I'm forced to shoot at f10-f11 to get clearer shots. Given the loss of the great 64 point AF to a single AF point, loss of handheld shots, and f10-f11 apertures and the associated high ISO setting, I use the above combination on a very limited basis. Unfortunately it's seems like it's better to crop than use the above combination. Your thoughts?

    Hi Joseph, about the only advantage that the 80D user has over the 7Dmk2 user with the 1.4 x extender on any of the 400 f5.6 Canon lenses is more coverage of the AF frame. Having image stabilization on the newer lenses really, really helps with handholding such long focal lengths and small pixel sensor cameras. For myself, I only use the 1.4x on the EF 100-400L IS ii when the light is good and subjects are well defined and not moving about too much. I agree with you that the image quality suffers somewhat in more difficult conditions. If it is at all possible, I prefer to work without the extender and try get closer, though i do realize this is not always feasible...

  • @josephkarpinski9586

    @josephkarpinski9586

    One other observation. It seems that when I use the 1.4x extender, I'm unable to crop in post processing, as far as I can when not using it, until the image quickly begins to brake down. For example in Photoshop, an image taken without the 1.4x extender starts off at 30% crop, and I can easily crop at 50, 60, and 100% before the image starts to degrade. An image taken with the 1.4x extender, starts off at 50% crop, 60% crop is fine, but 100% crop is in most cases unusable. It's like there's less ability to enlarge the image before it breaks down and becomes grainy. Your thoughts?

  • @grantatkinson8108

    @grantatkinson8108

    7 жыл бұрын

    My thoughts would be that in order to get images that are really sharp enough to hold up to that level of cropping that you mention, that you might do best to be keeping the 400mm, non-stabilized lens as stable as possible, and also making sure to use faster shutter speeds if possible, to stop any camera/lens motion and/or subject motion. I am not sure if your shooting scenario allows for you to use a tripod or a beanbag but i would recommend it when shooting at 400mm plus 1.4x extender focal length, and a camera with small pixels like the 7dmk2. If you are able to rest or support the camera and keep it dead steady, try some shots with Live View focusing and that combination just to see if they are sharper than when you are focusing through the viewfinder, for comparison only...?

    Hi Grant, Slightly different topic but would value your advice. I am about to buy a Canon 500mm F4 mark i and plan to get the 1.4 and 2 Mark III teleconverters. Can you advise do they both work well with the canon 500 F4 and is the image quality affected? I'm also hoping that the 500 has better image quality than my SIgma 160-600 sport. Your advice is much appreciated. Regards David

    Hi Melrose Vision Mission, yes, both those converters will work well with the EF 500L f4 Mark I (confirm you are talking about the version One IS image stabilized lens). They both take away some sharpness, and degrade overall quality, for the 1.4 converter its only a very little, for the 2x its a bit more noticeable. However, as that lens starts out with fantastic image quality most of the time the images are still good enough for most requirements. The 1.4 x converter will slightly slow down the AF when photographing moving things, and with the 2x converter the AF will slow down quite a bit, and may sometimes be prone to hunting. For sure the bare 500 f4 and perhaps also with the 1.4 converter should have image quality that is a bit better than the zoom lens you mentioned. With the 2x probably less better. With the Canon super telephoto lenses and extenders, the more high performance camera bodies can sometimes work better specially with focusing. Hope something there helps
