Canon 5D Mark IV vs 5D Mark III Long-term Review (Wedding Photography)

This is our long-term real world review of the Canon 5d Mark IV. We've shot over 200.000 frames with this camera on weddings and family shoot the last year, so have quite some experience with how this camera performs. This will not be a scientific review, but rather our opinion about how it is to use as a wedding photographer on real weddings.
We're comparing this camera mostly to the Canon 5d Mark III (which we used for almost 5 years), but also the Nikon D750 and Sony A9.

    Yea like I mentioned in the video, it's a very good camera and better than de 5d3 for sure. But after trying the Sony A9, the AF system of any dSLR feels really outdated though. Image quality wise, the 5d4 is great. It depends on what you find important. I get annoyed by shots that are "just" out-of-focus, even though I calibrate all of our lenses. After trying things like Eye-AF of the Sony, it kinda feels like cheating. That's how good it works. It feels like I could give that camera to anyone and they'd get in-focus shots all of the time. :)

    I am sure, mirrorless is the future, too! I don't really have problem with the AF, only with Sigma or older lenses. However, the dual pixel autofocus is great for video in the 5D IV!

    Some may think I'm crazy, but I have just sold my Nikon D850 to go back to 5D Mark III (not IV). I purchased a brand new one on eBay for $2000 AUD. Lots of reasons why I went back. But mostly because I miss those gorgeous Canon colours and my favourite Canon lenses (50mm f/1.2L & 135mm f/2L). Things I didn't need in the D850 - 45.7 megapixel and 4K video. Yes, I was definitely affected by G.A.S. It is so nice to have my 5D back, feels like home to me. I love your honesty, great review.

    Man I'm on the same boat. Returned the D850 to B&H. Now contemplating III or IV. Definitely like you said, don't need that 45.7mp. I shoot fashion and do a lot of retouching on the files and my MBP can't handle that file size. The lag messes with the creative process.

    That was the most honest and truthful review of the Canon 5D Mark IV that reflects my experience with it. Their autofocus system was plenty good at the time of the release. And DPAF is still best for the video, but through the viewfinder, Sony has made a quantum leap in focus. However, it's not like it's bad. It's pretty good but definitely not amazing as the Sony's new cameras since the a6500, a9, a7r/a7 iii. But we're talking about new cameras that were just introduced. Canon has all the tech to make a perfect camera, but they are just putting a little bit of it like truffle shavings when everyone else is giving you family style party platter of newest tech available. With all that said, Canon's skin tones are still the best. And that can't be overlooked. Customers are experts at how their face looks in the best light and expect you to perform magic in all lighting conditions, sometimes without makeup. And Canon does that by hiding blemishes, smoothing out wrinkles, and making their skin look natural and healthy in all lighting conditions. The raw files of other manufacturers need a lot of work, and after a lot of tweaking per file (very time consuming), it is never quite as good as Canon's which are often perfect right out of the camera. And for pros, time saved is money earned. And that's one customer that's gonna refer you or call you back for other projects.

    Hi Nice balanced review.I have the canon 5d mark iv and a canon 24-70mm II usm lens that I use for weddings.As the mark iv has a lot of focusing features it takes time to learn how to get the best out of them.What I tried was using touch screen focus shots,then switched to manual shot settings to try and match up to try and achieve the same quality as the touch screen shots.I started out getting a lot of blurry images when I started out with this camera and I thought it was because the lens does not have image stabilization,but it was about learning all of the focusing features in manual or semi manual settings.You will get there I promise you if you have had the same issues as me.

    Heres a tip: I shoot RAW but if you ever need unlimited burst mode without the buffer filling up, you can shoot full 30MP JPEG's in high quality, it'll last as long as your card last, it won't ever fill up the buffer. I switched to Sony for a little while, came back to Canon. Sony does definitely have some advantages, however the Canon still has a ton of advantages for professionals. It won't be long until Sony is fully ready in every way. I don't have any focus problems although I must admit I don't shoot the kinda stuff where that becomes too evident. The focus system on the 5D Mark IV is extremely intelligent, better than the A7Rii for example. However the Sony A9 and the Sony A7Riii seem to be surpassing the Canon on multiple levels. Now that they got a bigger battery and two card slots they are definitely a contender.

  • @monetmine

    @monetmine

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yea, thats a good tip! Thanks :) I must say that the buffer of the 5d4 is not an issue for me anymore, it's fast enough now for almost any situation. True, Canon has really good things for professionals, like CPS. I've used their service for replacement gear before and it's great. Sony recently launched their pro-services here, but don't know how good they are yet. Lens-wise Sony has everything I would like. (24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 35 1.4, 85 1.4 and macro). Not totally sure how the performance is with flashes though. I must say I've only used the Sony A9, so I don't know how the a7r2 performs, but from what I've read the focus is indeed not as good. I'm wondering how the 3 will perform, but the first reviews have been positive. The price is a lot more attractive as well. :) One thing I vastly prefer on the Canon's is the user interface and implementation of the touch-screen though. It's so much more user-friendly! Canon just has to match the AF performance of the Sony's and I'm happy! ;)

  • @monetmine

    I'm really happy Sony made that camera. To me it almost seems like a cheaper mirrorless version of the 5d4. If Canon were to make a mirrorless 5d4 version, it would probably be something like this. But then for $4k+ :) So I think it's good competition for Canon. I'm still not going to switch, even though it would cost me a lot less money than with the A9. But I'm going to wait a year or so to see if Canon has any plans at all to bring out a full-frame mirrorless. If not, we'll probably go to Sony. It's great news that 3rd party manufacturers also starting to make lenses, like Sigma. :)

    I haven't picked it up yet, and don't think I will. It's such a shame, it could've been the PERFECT camera for my uses. Since about 80% of our income comes from weddings, I really can't live without a dual card slot. I know some people say "but my card never failed". Well mine did. Between 2 weddings when we were staying in a hotel. It was like midnight and my main CF card was corrupt. I was SO happy that I could just pop in my SD card and has no worries. All else it looks really great! I'm curious how it'll hold up in terms of AF vs the Sony, but I'm sure the ergonomics, menu system, colors will be great. I am worried about simple limitations like not being able to use eye-af in continuous mode. That's silly. :) The flip screen would also be perfect for my video's. Hmpf. Really bummed about the card slot.

    I like your review, very objective. I have been a canon photographer for over 20 years and for a number of circumstances I had to renew my kit, I tried the Nikon d750, as you say the side focus points do not work well, but I found a better focus accuracy than my old 5d3, so many less problems with f1.8 optics. With canon I always had problems with Back or Front Focus. I also tried the d850. Great camera, very complete. Of nikon I do not like the use of dials and the poor live view. These days I've been testing an A7R III with 24-70 2.8. Honestly the focus of focusing is fantastic and the idea to go back to 5d4 makes me a little scared. It is true that ergonomics is also important when you work, the sony in this sense too many small and close-knit keys, especially with long lenses. I want to see if things are getting better with the vertical grip. With 5d4 did you try to calibrate your lenses? Thanks !

  • @monetmine

    @monetmine

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi man! Thanks for the comment. Yea the focus with the center point worked well on the d750, true! But I must say, I'm now using an old 5d3 with 35 f2 IS and that combo works better for me than the d750 and 35 1.8. (I use it to make photos of my daughter, mostly low-light around the house). Nice that you've tried the a7r3! Thanks for posting your findings. I'm hoping to test it out soon and make a video review about it. I don't think I'll buy it just yet, because I'm so invested in Canon (4 5d4 bodies), but it doesn't hurt to try it out. :) Like I said before, the 5d4 is great in so many points. I love the colors, touch screen, ease of use and buffer is good too. But AF wise I guess to Sony's have an edge because better object and eye/face tracking. Yea of course! I calibrate all my lenses (using Focal software)

  • @monetmine

    @monetmine

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yep, also after calibration :) I don't use the camera's if they're not calibrated, it's the first thing I do when I get a new camera or lens. Yea, focus is still a challenge with the 5d4. I must say I had this with the 5d3 and hoped the 4 would solve it, but it doesn't unfortunately. But I now think this is just a problem of dSLR-system because of the way the focus system works. Mirrorless I think is the only solution, because you directly focus on the image which is captured on the sensor.. That's why I think the 5d4 will be my last dSLR :)

  • @monetmine

    @monetmine

    6 жыл бұрын

    Well, the focus is quite quick of the 5d4.. But I must say that when looking through the files, some are just a bit out of focus. That might be because the subject is moving a bit, or I'm shooting something which is not directly beneath a focus point or something. When I tried out the A9, it just felt a lot "smarter", in that it just tracked the object I focussed on much better. When I focussed on a face for example and the person would move forward/backword or sideways, it would track them to keep them in focus. I guess it also depends on how you shoot. I shoot quite a bit on f2.8 or lower, which gives very small depth of field to work with. On the 5d4 you have "smart" tracking modes as well, but they're nowhere as good as the Sony's.

    Very great review!! Im a wedding photographer and im building my gear currently. Im in the position of upgrading my 5D2. Im confused between taking up 5D3 or 5D4. With the money should i go with 5D4? Or i can just take 5D3 and buy 1 more lens? Is it worth the money to get 5D4? Thank you so much!!

    Hey Daniel, thanks! :) I'm going to make it even more complex for your.. Because since this review the Sony A7III came out, which is miles ahead in terms of AF versus even the 5D4, for like 2000 dollars. If I were in your shoes I'd switch to Sony. But that might also depend on how far invested you are into the Canon system. Do you have the 70-200 2.8II and 24-70 2.8II etc yet? If not, I'd really look if you can stretch your budget for a Sony system.

    Mon et Mine Thanks for the quick reply!!! Actually im thinking about that. I dont have wedding lenses. My lenses now are quite random and im going to swap some lenses for wedding setup. My current lenses 50F1.4, 28F1.8, 100F2.8, 24-105F4, 100-400F3.5. I have A7 body with only 50F1.8. I will have 3500$ (could be extend) budget for investment for wedding setup. Mainly focus on photography and video in the future.

    The pro's of the Canon (which are relevant to me): - Better color without much tweaking - Better menu system - Better touch-screen functions Pro's of the Sony: - Probably better AF tracking (I've heard it's close to the A9, which is leaps ahead of the 5d4) - EVF. I love being able to see what my shot will look like - Higher resolution I think it kind of depends on if you're heavily invested into Canon at the moment. If so, then it might be wise to wait till Canon comes out with a mirrorless system. That's what I'm going to do right now. If I didn't have much investment in the Canon system, then I think the a7r3 is great value for money and the focus system alone should be worth it.

    Mon et Mine Thank you for the great summary. I also was thinking about the nice build of canon, it’s user interface, and availability of the 5d iv with its current promos(sony might be back ordered). My only investment is in two lens including the 70-200 2:8 (i love), 50 1.4. Also hearf the sigma and metabones adapters might work with eye AF

    Well in terms of AF it's not that good to be honest.. Only the center AF point is usable. The mark 3 is still a good camera for a few years, but the mark 2 has some pretty old technology, also in terms of ISO performance. To be really honest I would try to save up for the 3, you won't regret it.

    Thank you! From what I’ve heard adapters on the Sony work OK but not great.. personally if i would move to Sony I’d go for native lenses for best performance. If you really want to keep your lenses I think a Canon R with an adapter would be better. Or wait for a more pro version of the R (which is what we are doing)

    Well it depends on what you shoot. For us (weddings) it misses one key feature and that is dual card slots. That's such a deal breaker that I'm not going to buy it yet. I surely hope that Canon comes out with a more "pro" version of the R with dual card slots. If you don't plan on using the dual card slot I think the R might be a solid choice. With the new lens line-up, it seems that Canon is serious about the new mirrorless system. The new 24-70 f2 is heavy, but that might be such an awesome lens. I would be hesitant to buy into a DSLR system right now though. I really do think that in a few years time Canon and Nikon will mostly develop lenses for their mirrorless system. So conclusion: either buy the R camera if it's good enough for you now, or wait for the "pro" R body that surely will come out sometime. If you really need a body right now, but want to switch to a more pro R version body later on, you could also buy a 5d3 2nd hand and use it for a few months.. Disclaimer: I haven't tested the R body yet, so it's just my very early opinion..

    You forget to mention the price. You can get a 5div , new, from Ebay , as low as 2600 dollars in US. You can get the excellent Tamron G2 , 24-70, 15-30 and 70-200 for around 3000 dollars. Plus a 1500 5diii body and two Yongnuo flashes, you are more than covered for any event( why would you use primes for weddings?). That makes a 7500 dollara killer system, which would make happy any client. Now let't go with Sony. Two A7r3( not even counting the expensive A9) are now 7000 dollars alone( you cannot count any camera without double slot cards and decent battery, like A7r2). Plus the holly trinity of lenses is another 7500 dollars( no used, no third party). Plus expensive, proprietary,,not so powerful flashes, here you drop 15-16k dollars on a system which will give you a 3-5 percent advantage in image quality, barely noticeable in real life. And just when you thougt that you are set, here comes Canon in 2018 with the 5ds marl 2, 60 mpx, flipout screen, 9frames per second, the autofocus of 1DXii, and 4 k video. Who's biting their nails? No, thank you. I am way more tempted by an alternative Lumix system. I never fell in love with Sony interface. Lumix cameras are a joy to use. I would keep an old, cheap full frame for extreme shallow dof in portraits and use the Lumix for all the rest.

  • @monetmine

    Yes, agree the Sony system is a lot more expensive right now. But when I bought the 5d4's (when they were just out), they costed 4200 euro's per piece as well. So that's not exactly cheap. It's of course true that you can use cheaper third party lenses on Canon camera's and not so much on the Sony's, but I must say that after having owned many many lenses, including third party Tamron and Sigma lenses and have shot a lot with them, I keep coming back to Canon lenses. And then the price becomes a lot more comparable. And yes, the increase in quality might be small, but I get pretty frustrated when the focus is just a bit off on key moments. That shouldn't have to happen anymore with this great technology we have. When I tried out the Sony's, it really felt like the focus system finally reached the 21st century. But of course, you can even get great photos with a 5d classic even, but good gear makes it a lot easier. And I agree, Canon will probably come out with a great mirrorless camera soon (I hope), so that's why I haven't switched to Sony. But I was merely stating that if I had the make the choice right now, not having upgraded yet, I might've switched. Because buying 4x 5d4's is almost like buying completely into a new brand.

    well i was use to taking pictures only on my phone i never use the camera before so my uncle gave me his old camera a canon 400d 10.1 megapixel and i was using that and i learn the camera and i took some great shots. but then i realize my pictures wasn't looking sharp like the girl pictures who lived next door to me. i was using the tamron 18-200 lens that came with the camera and i notice in low light situations the camera didn't take a good picture and i had the iso at the max which was 1600. the camera don't record video and i notice all of this by using another camera that excels in everything that's what i meant by that. what i meant to say was i wanted a camera with a better auto focus and better in low light and can record video when i want to do that. a couple of people told me to go full frame and look at the canon 5d mark 3 and the canon 6d mark 2 i just want to choose between the ywo and call it a day lol.
