The way you say "milimeter" is what gets me through life. Excellent analysis, I made my choice. 40mm!

Use the 40mm on my 5d - utterly gorgeous results, and makes a very light walkabout setup
I Love the 40mm pancake and its my standart on 5D III and 6D I. Nice video 👍
The best review I’ve seen so far. Veru detailed and I thank you for that. I am always wondering If I will get 50mm but now I finally found my answer. I’ll just stick to my 40mm
one of the best reviews I have ever seen..
Sold my 40mm when I (briefly) changed brands. Time to buy it back. Thanks for the video.
Great video comparing the 2 lenses, my current setup is a 6D + 40mm 2.8, I contemplated getting the 50mm but seems like the 40mm is sharper and offers a decently wider image.
Very nice review - really like your sample shots & structure of the video! Just one remark: would be nice to have the aperture mentioned additionally to the focal lenght for the pictures. Just curious :-)
I have a 90 square feet room and i am planning to shoot videos in it so will the 40mm lens work for me?
Excellent review and photos ! Thanks
Hi, can you explain how do you see.focus shift on the 50mm? I can't see. Can you describe some instructions to identify in the picture where is this focus shift happening?
I been using both for 3 months now and I love both lenses. If I shooting at night then 50 has a slight advantage but day street photography the 40mm pancake size is very discreet and gives a slightly wider composition
Hi. Do you use centre spot AF and recompose? If so, do you have problems with the 40mm? I'm finding the lens doesn't have a flat enough field to support this way of working and am wondering how to work around it with my 6D.
Thank you! Very technical. And awesome photos...
Thank you for the review. I needed help choosing a lens before Christmas pictures, and this was very helpful. Happy holidays!
as always, thank you for the detailed effort and the sharing. i am a satisfied subscriber. thumbs up.
Excellent Review! Thank you from UK.
thanks man!! i just bought both
which is better for videography?
Thanks! A very good comparison!
Very thorough and useful. Thank you!
Excellent report! Thanks a lot!
thank you for this review. It was very helpful.
Good rewiev, thanks! I just ordered a used 40mm. I have a 50mm 1,4 from before and I'm not that impressed with that. The depth of field is so shallow, it's too much for me, and the autofocus is not very exact, even if I have micro adjusted the camera/lens.
50mm f1.8 - hit or miss focus, true, that never changes. From arc drive on the 1st revision with metal bayonet, to micromotor in ver. II, all the way to STM here. This fifty only seems nifty. 50mm f1.4 from Canon usually gets bad reviews, because of the variance in quality. But recently Canon quietly improved this factor, and now they are really okay in the corners even wide open.
Very thorough. Good work.
살면서 이렇게 완벽한 렌즈 리뷰는 처음봐요 감사합니다
Thanks for the awesome work. Really what I wanted !
Wow, very informative thank you !!
I bough many years ago a 40mm and I've have never use another lens. I really like how it captures light, is very "tridimensional" and I just have a very base line Canon 600D. The only problem, if any, is trying to make an American cut indoors and also lighting. But overall, I really like it! Great video.
Superior analysis. I have the 40mm pancake & was considering the 50mm f1.8 also. Not now as you've given the edge to the 40.
Great video. Thank you!
Very informative, thx!
I agree the 40 mm is the better lens of the two not only does it give you better perspective but it’s also a sharper lens
great comparision video
Thank you
Great video thanks Your accent is cool also.
bery gud work man! :)
The 40mm also seems to snap into focus faster, while I feel the 50mm is a little hesitant. The 40mm is very good for events, when you know you will have to take tons of pictures of groups of people, you can carry the camera with it all day and nigh long. Also the wider angle will make sure everybody is in focus even at F2.8.

Great Video!! I bought 40mm f2.8 bcs this video is influencing me to buy this lens. But is it really different owning both 40 and 50? I need the f1.8 but is the 40mm picture will be totally different than 50mm? Or should i bought other lens with f1.8 but different focal length???

I think of 40mm. I had the 50mm and the wide apertures ain't too much sharp and I believe the 40mm had tack sharp even at the widest aperture.
I own both but I use 40mm more often than 50mm. I feel 40mm has a slightly better contrast and the angle of view is better for my needs, 50mm is too tight and 35mm is too wide for my preference. But still I think 50mm has better value although 40mm win in overall results
I have both on a FF 6D, and there’s no question that the 40mm is sharper wide open than the 50. As this review states and others state, the 50 is much better for blurring backgrounds and low light though. But the 40 really is sharp as a tack and has superior contrast to the 50.

Do you find it a bit redundant to have both? I have the 50, and I'm torn between 35mm f2 and 40mm f2.8, I think the later would be redundant with a 50mm in my bag.

Nahum Ibañez maybe, yes. The only reason I have them both is because I bought a used package that came with both lenses. I will say that the 40 is much sharper than the 50.
Execellent review and description, thanks I will go for 440mm.

440mm pancake would be a hit if it existed. :D
Very nice video and comparison work. Which one of these lenses would you recommend for an APS-C sensor camera??? (I don't make any Video work at all with my camera.) Thank you very much for your answer!!!

Thanks! take a look at this video, this is for APS-C users: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n55ptZqhqNinfJs.html For most people, 50mm is a better choice on crop.

Depends on your body. The EOD R and RP will allow you to use EF-S lenses but will automatically use a 1.6x crop, effectively giving you only 11 megapixels out of the 26 available.

I have a canon 24mm sim 2.8 lens that is for full frame and takes great, sharp pictures. Just make sure it's the EF and not the EF-S version. So, Yes, the EF version can be used on full frame.
what is 8:40 ?? Colimator hahah ?
I mean 40mm.
50 looks better but 40 captures more in the frame. That’s about it
