Here's how I play the thumb picker's anthem; Cannonball Rag. I worked this song out many years ago, but recently I saw Tommy Emmanuel play a version for Guitar Centre which had a few runs, fills and embellishments that I decided to pinch and add to this version. As with all these tunes, I'd recommend learning it slowly, but once you've got all the positions memorised, a good tempo to build it up to, would be around say, 190-220 bpm. Having said that, this tempo is still a fair bit slower than the lightning speed Tommy plays it at!
Be sure to try and copy the chord shapes I'm fretting, as well as following the tabs, because some of the notes that the thumb pick catches on the down sweep, are not tabbed out, as it would make the tab quite confusing to follow. If you're having trouble catching all the notes for the fast runs, you can always slow the speed of the video down in the KZread player settings (it's the little wheel icon you need to click on, then adjust playback speed).
Best of luck and have fun with it :)

Oh my god I thought I was taking crazy pills because all the tabs on google are wrong. Thank you for posting an accurate one. This instantly unlocked this song for me.
What a beautiful song... dreamt of playing this since I first heard it 20 years ago. My playing is finally good enough to give this a good shot. Thank you for this video!!!
It's so pleasing when you find a accurate tab. Thanks

Perfect tempo. Alot of guys play it too fast. Good job young man.
This is truly marvellous. It’s such a great resource to have this played so fluidly and all tabbed out for everyone to learn and enjoy. Thank you.

Fantastic rendition 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
1.5x speed for Tommy's playing in his tutorial, 1.75x speed for how fast Tommy plays it live :P Also, thanks for the transcription. Fairly accurate and saved me a bit of time for a couple sections :)

"fairly accurate" ? what a douche .. this piece is played differently by everyone, even Merle played it differently .. if you knew anything about accuracy, would could have figured it out yourself .. moron

Superb playing as always! Really enjoy your tutorials man and I’ve been wanting one on this for ages. Once again, you’re the man to come to. May I ask how long you have been playing for? And more specifically, this kind of fingerpicking style of playing? Keep up the good work!

Hey thanks Rob! I’ve been playing guitar all my life really but Travis picking since around 2007 :)
Géniale ! J’adore
If you put the guitar tab slightly above the bottom, the little menu bar which pops up wouldn't block out the tab if someone wants to pause it and look.
I'm getting spongebob vibe. I need to buy thumb pick from local store and learn this already:
Can you put the tabs on the top so when paused we can see them ? thanks.
Pretty
Thanks man, I've been learning a few songs through your videos. Can you do Blue Smoke some time?

Playing with a thumb pick is best for this style :) I don't know that one, but maybe one day!

vERY NICE VERSION....LOOKS TOUGH...WILL TRY
Thanks a lot. You have done a great job!! Just a small detail… in the 19th measure (0.45) I also hear the D sound when you play (3rd string 7th fret with the 4th sting 6th fret together?), I can’t see it in the tab.

Hey Mauro, yeh that's right, all through the tune there are some extra notes that the thumb pick catches which I didn't write out as I felt it would make the tab look a little messy. Just copy the chord shapes and dig in with the thumb pick when needed! Thanks!

That's great your working like a trojan how you remember all the pieces I'll never know rock on
On the first bar 2nd beat are you hitting both the 4th and 3rd string with the thumb? So the 3rd and the 7th at the same time? In your tab it doesn’t seem like the gstring is being played but I can clearly hear it.
Nice....now...double tempo 👍

Hah! I am done. Thank you very much! Only one question. How do you play that open G notes 1:04? Or my ears cannot hear them? When I listen Tommy Emmanuel I cannot catch that open G notes... What's the secret)))?
@CamiloJamesGuitar
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! You just have to sweep down a little with the thumb pick to catch more than one string 👍
nice job, but the single note section could use some work. Keep it up you are almost there.
le rythm Sur la tab???
The chords please!!!
Wow this is impossible to play lol thanks though
I watched it at 1.25x speed
Should learn to READ MUSIC!!!🤔🤔🤔
Thanks so much for this excelent break down, and all your amazing lessons... also the House of rising sun you nailed perfectly ...it is so motivating and helpfull! I´m glad I can support you a bit through Patreon ...I have been trying to learn fingerpicking for about 2 years and always thought this masterpiece must be very demanding so did not dare give it a try but I´m so happy to find out that it is in fact quite simple (in terms of fingerpicking style which is surely difficult itself) as long as you do not try to play the speed as TE does:-) IMHO this is one of the most thrilling and catching guitar songs ever written.... what a driving rythm & melody and fun to play!!! Please keep doing some fingerpicking lessons if you find time for that... it´s just a pity that there are no available tabs for all of the 17 fingerpicking covers you published but I´m hoping you will share them one day. BIG THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!
