Thanks for taking the time to share your experience canning with our Beer Gun™. Great idea for homemade presents this holiday. Cheers!

GREAT JOB! I have an Oktober Design SL1 Can Seamer with the optional splash guard and I love it! I also use a Blichmann Beer Gun (older model.) I normally put my beer gun into a tall Tupperware pitcher full of StarSan. I place the Can Seamer on a thick folded towel and I put the can I'm filling into a shallow plastic dish to contain what runs over. I fill the can to the very top, float the lid on the foam and place it into the seamer. I allow the chuck on the seamer to press the lid in place before starting the motor. I've attached a foot switch to operate the motor so as to free up my hands. I can seam a whole case of cans pretty quickly with minimal mess. Cleanup isn't too bad and I get to share my brews with friends who don't have to worry about returning my bottles.
The Beer Gun is one of the best purchases I've made since I starting homebrewing. Maybe my next purchase will be a canning setup! I really appreciate these videos--it's great to be able to see how something works before giving it a shot myself.

Enjoyed the video.. I can see the preference to can over bottling when you are bringing beer to a gathering or gifting.. Soon, I will be visiting family and friends and will be swapping full 22oz flip top bombers for empties.. Stay Safe!..

They offered me one of those a while back, but I declined because it didn't fit within my home set up.
The only problem with kegging is that you can't take it with you which is where bottling and canning comes in handy. But like you said, beer bottles aren't cheap anymore especially the swing tops. Holy shit they are extremely expensive now. I found that out when I went to order some bottles for my BrewDemon Hellfire Deep Red Ale light beer kit. It was cheaper to buy a case of regular bottles, bottle capper and bottle caps than it was to buy a 12 pack of swing top bottles. This also looked like a pain in the ass to do. I'll definitely be going with a kegging system when I decide to upgrade my home brew set up.
I just bought this canner. Im going to see if i cant build a frame to mount this in my drill press.

Hi Larry, Great video as usual. I have been brewing for eight years now, and I still bottle condition three batches every two months. I have a kegging system, but I still prefer natural over forced carbonation. Bottles are a lot more work, but I have been retired for ten years, and I have the time. You are right bottles are expensive, and I hate to give them away. Canning could be in my future, if it is possible to condition in a can. CHEERS!!

Why not naturally carbonate/condition in the keg then bottle? Could save you some troubles and ensure consistency in the bottled beer.

@@BEERNBBQBYLARRY I did naturally carbonate in the keg once, and I was very happy with the results. I would not hesitate to do it again. It might be my imagination, but it seems to me that natural carbonation taste better than forced carbonation.

@@3rwparks3 I used to have that opinion too but was never able to verify it in any way. My impression at the time was that natural carbonation made the bubbles “taste” smaller and therefore smoother. Could never find any real explanation for it though.

You could always give it a little blast of co2 while the wand is under the surface of beer to get it to foam up a bit before you cap it (if there isn't enough foam for your liking) Nice review i may consider one of these in the future.
@BEERNBBQBYLARRY

Good idea. I dabbled with that idea a bit, but I think it was left on the cutting room floor. Didn’t want to create too many bubbles or possibly have it precipitate any of the dissolved CO2 in the beer. My real mistake was really just not accounting for the additional friction from the line length. I guess that’s what happens when you only do someone once in several blue moons. lol

BEER-N-BBQ by Larry I saw someone else using a canner on a larger scale and they would keep a bucket of water next to the canner so once it was finished seaming they would just dunk it in the clean water then set it on a towel until they were done. Seems easier than having to clean each one individually after you're done canning.

Thanks! I guess I was being stingy for this batch since it was an imperial bourbon stout that cost me a lot in ingredients to make.
I’m still working on my counter pressure bottle filler.. prototypes have worked..making it smaller and easier to use. Trying to finalize it to a “one hand operation”… I’ll send u one for beta testing when completed. Not going to sell it, but will make plans / files available online at no charge. Sill a little $$, but I could see a beer club purchasing one and sharing it among members…

I am going to have to stay in my lane on this one. The results I get from bottling are pretty difficult to improve on. The can wins hands down with securing beer, bottles break. But, I can bottle as a secondary and come away with an improved product, and I could do the same with canning, but bottles are free. All I have to buy is a sack of caps. I generally reuse bottles that came with a commercially marketed beer in it. I am not about to buy cans, lids, a canner, six pack holders to put them in, etc. etc. Bottling can be done quickly, but it takes repetition to develop a process that satisfies our time constraints. Cheers Bud.

@BEERNBBQBYLARRY

It’s less than swingtop or returnable bottles, but that may vary due to aluminum shortages that come and go. Either way, is still cheaper yet to just keg it.
Canning is so satisfying... I just need cheaper cans...
Don't see the point point in purging the can with co2. The beer fills the can anyway, and when you cap on foam it's only CO2.
@BEERNBBQBYLARRY
Жыл бұрын
Like with bottling and kegging, the goal is to displace air at the bottom of the vessel so that when the beer splashes into the bottom of the vessel, it doesn’t churn and mix with air and therefore doesn’t start the staling process. I think a bonus effect is that the blanket of CO2 dominant air rides the surface of rising beer in the vessel this also minimizing air contact.
Canning seems more of a novelty to me? I don't see much advantage over bottling. At least with bottling, they're reusable. How much do the cans cost? Definitely not enough to justify $500 on a seamer, IMO.
@BEERNBBQBYLARRY

It’s the latest home brewing fad. IMO, there’s only one reason to can as I said in the video; to throw them away when empty after drinking the contents. Otherwise, such to swing tops, growlers, and kegs.

@@peterlokin4098 they can break (bust open after dropping them) although not as fragile as bottles not make a hazardous mess of shards everywhere. Regarding the light, I don’t consider that a problem for home brewers since the beer will usually be in a dark fridge, basement, or other area as opposed to commercial beer sitting on store shelves.
That seems far more tedious than bottling. I can sanitize fill and cap 48 bottles in about 30 minutes.

I think it's less work than bottling. The steps are exactly the same for both except that cans don't require a cleaning before using them.
