Canning Apple Cranberry Chutney for the Holidays

This turned out so well! I hope you'll give it a try. I think it's going to be great for teacher gifts, neighbor gifts, hostess gifts, etc. Serve it with turkey, chicken, pork. Use it on sandwiches, on meat and cheese appetizer boards. How else would you use it?

    Try putting your onion in the freezer about 5-10 minutes before chopping - may help with the eye burning. This looks like an interesting tasty chutney. TFS

    I have not been a fan of Chutneys in the past, but this one I will give a try. I am excited to try it with pork. I always have apple sauce with pork and I think this will be a nice change. I am also going to try adding this to my BBQ sauce.

    Hi Carter. Just started watching your replay of the video on making the Apple Cranberry Chutney. Saw that you lighted a pillar candle. It helps more the closer you have it to chopping the onions. Hope it will give you some relief. If you wanted your chutney to be more red, you might could use a few drops of red food coloring or gel. Just saying...It looks delicious!!!🌞

    When you buy an Apple peeler/corer, get one that suction cups to a counter… it’s amazing! I used an older model that you would have to use on the edge of a counter or table and it was more difficult to use.

    The reason onions hurt your eyes is because they emit a gas when you're cutting them. I put a small fan on my countertop to blow that gas away from me. No more crying!!!!! Thanks for the recipe...can't wait to try it for this holiday season!!

    Hi Carter, I’m just curious. Which cranberry chutney did you prefer, this one or the one in the more recent video? I know it’s personal preference, but I’m curious. Thank you.

    Hmmm. Good question. They're both delicious. The apple cranberry chutney is excellent for using on meats or perhaps in mixing with a salad dressing or BBQ sauce to up the yumminess. The spicy cranberry chutney would be excellent with cheese or cream cheese (think hot pepper jelly). My original thought for the spicy version is as a meatball sauce. I have some cranberry jalapeno meatballs from Costco. I am dying for someone to have a pot luck party to which I can take a crockpot of the meatballs in the chutney! The first one is more sweet with a bit of heat. The second is more heat with a bit of sweet. For the way we eat, the apple cranberry chutney is more versatile, so if I could only choose one, I suppose it would be the one. How do you think you would use a cranberry chutney?

  • @growandpreserve

    @growandpreserve

    They can't hurt! Raisins, including golden raisins are low on the pH scale (3.3-4.2), so they're not going to negatively impact the safety of the recipe. let me know what you think if you try it!

    I might be getting some free persimmons. What are your thoughts on a persimmon cran-raisin chutney with onions, peppers & spices you’d normally put in persimmon cookies? Persimmons are a 4.2 ph.

    … this looks excellent ! … QUESTION … For serving without canning it, would you let it cook longer to compensate for the extra cooking time ? … I think I will separate my batch to eliminate the jalapeños for the grandkids … also, I may keep my apples in wedges to give it more body … and maybe add some walnuts … I will probably substitute allspice for the spice combination you used … thank you for the inspiration !
