Canned Air vs Padlock - TV Spy Trick From Burn Notice

Will canned air freeze a padlock enough for the steel to break? I decided to test a TV spy trick I saw on the show Burn Notice, where they froze a lock with a can of compressed air and broke it open with a hammer. I decided to test this with a few different locks. Let's see what happens.

Very cool experiment. Burn Notice was a great, one of a kind show. You may find you have better luck with it if you spray it directly into the lock. I believe it is the locking mechanism that needs to freeze, but I’m no expert. :)

I learned a trick from my PE coach in high school that works with most regular hackle locks, The last day of school he used a horseshoe peg and a 2lb hammer, he put the peg into the hackle and while prying on the lock he whacked the lock with the hammer and he very rarely had to hit them a second time

TV shows often show the wrong way to do something, so people won’t go out and do it. I was thinking it might work a little better spraying in the keyhole where the pins are. Nice demo.

Its fun occasionally to try tv show things, you never know what will happen. Along same lines, but on a more serious note, I'd love to see how well some locks hold up to prying with spike on breaching axe/tomahawk. I've seen marketing videos but not unbiased videos of if you can actually break locks. Be well this holiday season, Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.

Where is the control lock ? You need to hit a lock with a hammer first without freezing it. Hitting it with a hammer alone could break the lock.

I've picked way too many masterlocks with raking. They really are garbage, but are great as a visual deterrent. Realistically I use a Masterlock for my yard's carpark gate. I use the driveway anyways, and it's just to keep it closed. Works well enough with the elements and keeps the gate shut. However I wouldn't dare use that on something I cared about and needed to know was secure. They're cheap for a reason.

I would say most consumer grade padlocks are not hard to defeat when it comes to non-destructive defeats (picking). I'm a newbie lock picker with "all thumbs" and I haven't yet encountered a padlock that even I can't pick or bypass (talking about the average "master" type padlocks you can get from your local hardware or wally-world). There are some really good padlocks out there, but they can be pricey. I haven't had the need to bang one apart with a hammer in a long time, but the last time I did, they were pretty easy to do if you hit it just right -- aim for the top edge of the lock body where the hasp enters and hit it straight down. It never took a super hard hit if you got the aim-point square on. I've never tried a puck-lock though... That one has me curious.

@@SurvivalOnPurpose True. But you mentioned that it might be worth carrying a can of air. That would imply that you have reason to believe you might need to bypass a lock. Much better, more reliable ways of doing that. No picking skills required, and a pipe wrench is much easier to explain than cans of R-22 or a Sparrows pick set. I enjoy lock sport myself, but I have no illusions about the quickest way around a lock during a survival situation. BTW both Lock Picking Lawyer and BosnianBill have several videos like this if you are really interested in the viability of this. Take care, brother. Have a good Christmas.

Thats cute, 30 seconds or less and i'm through the shank lock with a grinder and cut off wheel. 30-45 seconds and i'm through your disk lock with a drill and a good bit. The Compressed Air is cool for "spy tricks" which i doubt ever happened in the field, the air is going to take longer and in the long run is louder. yes the grinder is loud but you can conceal the sparks and it doesn't take as long. Bryan, try going the other way, heat. Lockpicking Lawyer showed us that some big beefy Master locks have pot metal guts which can be melted with an ordinary propane torch. BTW I’ve had occasion to empty large 300 psi air tanks at work, and they will form ice, but I never thought they’d get cold enough to embrittle the metal. This is really interesting. Blowing off a CO2 extinguisher enough to get flakes of dry ice should get you to -109F. But I’d want liquid nitrogen to really pull off this trick. 40+ years ago, the tools in my pickup included a cutting torch and 62’ of hose. THAT will open locks! 😁

It's not refrigerant. Any gas releases cold when it decompresses. Compressing air makes it hot- an exothermic reaction. When you decompress it, it gets cold. An endothermic reaction. Refrigerant is also just a gas, but has greater potential for endothermic reaction upon expansion. 🤓
