This video shows how to prune grape vines using a cane pruning system. We go over how to choose four canes to produce grapes this year and how to prune renewal spurs which will grow canes this year to produce the fruit next year. The video contains footage from our full grape pruning class including some fast motion video showing the full pruning of this vine start to finish.

I've been reading a ton of info about pruning, and trying to find a simple video to show me visually what to do and look for. This is by far the most helpful video I saw. First time grape grower and I just wasn't getting it from the blogs. 😂

Excellent vid. I have a Crimson grape vine that training up to the pergola, if I keep pruning the fruiting cane every year then it will never reach to the top of pergola forever 😆 can I have your advice how to go about it ?

Great video. Five or six years ago I bought a house on a tidal river in Maine. Last year we saw we had a number of wild (Concord?) grapes growing on top of our sea roses (which produced a lot of grapes). The sea roses didn't do so well. I want to try to save both. I watched a lot of grape pruning videos but nothing really adresses my situation. I have some really thick "trunk" vines along the ground. I was thinking of putting a trellis a couple of feet behind the sea roses and hopefully move the grape vines along the trellis. If it sort of works next year I can do it "the right way". Any suggestions for a newbie? Thanks. Doug

Hi John I was wondering what pruning method do you use on your himrod grapevine. That is on your arbor?

Hi! We cane prune our Himrod on the arbor. The arbor makes cane pruning a little trickier than it would be with a trellis but it works fairly well. In general, I’d say on an arbor spur pruning is easier, but I read Himrod does better with cane pruning. I wonder how it would do spur pruned but cane pruning is working well for now.

@@foodscapingutah5239 I think cane pruning is whats required fo himrod as well. Im putting in 3 of the himrod this year. Trellising them in a somewhat limited sun location. From nh here. Will be my first attempt to grow grapes. Thanks for the info enjoyed your vids. Found them very informative. TY

The problem with this and other videos is they should but do not start out with defining “Bud” “Cane” “Shoot” “renewal spur” …this is last years’ growth right? Well tell us how we know…rather than ask us. Arrrg. “Too thick” Why? What do you mean? What is wrong with too thick? No it doesn’t make any sense..he asks at 4:10 “If that makes sense” NO! And meanwhile fast forward footage is useless. There is no starting point about what his goal is to start with. Keeps asking if that makes sense..no dude it doesn’t.

Greeting OurTube. As this video starts saying, for lots more detail please check out the full-length class we recorded Live on KZread. Much of the detail can be found there, but, of course, it is a longer video. In this case we decided to provide both a short 6 minute version for those who are looking for a short video and the much longer version for those who want more detail. Hope this helps.
