How To Make A Sea Glass Candle
We love candle making! We met Tommy Yaley at the Craft and Hobby Show. He and his family own and run Yaley Enterprises, makers of all kinds of candle making supplies. When we told Tommy that we wanted to do a video course in how to make candles, he helped us so much! He answered our questions and shared all his best tips and tricks. He also shared all kinds of candle making supplies! So as a big thank you to him and Yaley, we made this video showing how to use Yaley’s two-part mold to make an embedded candle. Thanks again Tommy!
We love the look of an embedded candle. We’ve seen beautiful ones at Pottery Barn and Pier One using shells, flowers, and even starlight peppermints. These candles make such lovely gifts and they are even more wonderful when handmade by you! This is a fun candle to make and we’ll show you how!
This candle requires a two-part mold. The inner mold makes a core candle. This is the candle that will actually melt when you burn this candle. After you make the inner candle, you set it inside the outer mold and add the embedments, then the wax. This keeps all the shells or sea glass or mints away from the burning canter of the candle. And also keeps these items on the outside of the candle where you can see them!
To wick the inner core mold, start by covering the top edge of the mold with small pieces of masking tape. Feed the wicking through the hole at bottom of mold leaving about one inch of wick. Coil the end of the wick. Roll the mold sealer into a ball and press it over the coiled wick to seal the bottom of the mold. Tie other end of the wick to a pencil and prop it across the top of the mold. Trim off excess wicking.
It is important that the wick is centered from top to bottom so you can safely burn your candle. It is also important to choose the right size wick for your candle. To determine the size of the wick for your candle, measure the diameter of your inner core mold. Then match that diameter with the wick packaging. The size of a wick refers to the diameter of the wick itself and how wide it will burn. It is important to choose a wick that will not burn too wide as you don’t want the burning part of the candle to reach the embedments.
Once you have your inner core candle made, you can set it inside the outer mold and add the embedments and more wax. In this video, we will show you an extra trick to expose more of your embedments once the whole candle is unmolded. We use a heat gun to melt away a small amount of the wax. this lets more of the sea glass in our candle show. It works like a charm!
We have an entire course on candle making at Curious.com. If you’ve never tried Curious, check it out. It’s a great site for learning all kinds of things. So beautiful! I have a small candle business and I make super intricate layered pillar candles. They take hours and hours to just make one and it's become so daunting. I've been looking for more "simple" candles to add to my collection and my candles are themed around the beach. Every time I've tried to make a candle adding shells or pebbles and what not, I always end up with bubbles. Turns out I was pouring way too cold into a cold metal or cold plastic mold! Thank you for sharing your craft with all of us and I'm going to pick up a bag of sea glass later today! Gorgeous candles. Edit: also wanted to add that I would have never ever thought to hit it with the heat gun afterwards! I always wondered how such a textured and transparent candle like this could be achieved! Another problem of mine was the opacity and not being able to see whatever I added.

Thanks for the input. We are careful to pour at the temperature recommended on the wax. This wax calls for the higher temperature. It is normal to have divots form as the wax cools and shrinks. No worries, just melt and repour to fill them! Cheers, J&K

Hi K & J, what a wonderful idea and a great outcome! What happens after the core candle has been used and burnt down to the bottom, do you have to start from the beginning with the moulds again or is there enough of the wax around the sea glass holding it together and just fill in the centre by pouring a new core into the outer part? I think it would be much safer if you poured the wax while you were standing then you'd have more control over the pour and less spillage.

  • @TheONeilSisters

    @TheONeilSisters

    4 жыл бұрын

Hmmm....we're not really sure if you could pour a new candle inside the outer core. It would be hard to get the wick inside and the hot wax would melt the outer core as you poured it. Maybe you could nestle a glass candle inside. J&K

Sorry for the delay, John. We have been trying to source the Translucent Crystals. The ones we used were from Yaley Candle Company. They sold their business to Vine Wick Candle Company vinewickcandle.com/ but we can't find the crystals on their website. Perhaps you can call them and see if they still have the crystals available. You can make the candle without the additive, but if you use a strong color wax it might not be as translucent as ours. Hope that helps! Jennifer & Kitty

Great and important question! The way we constructed the candle, the sea glass and shells are only around the outside of the candle. The center is just wax. The size of the wick creates a flame that only heats and melts the center wax part of the candle. Cheers, Jennifer & Kitty

Where do u buy embedded candle molds

  • @TheONeilSisters

We got our online. Here are some options: www.bulkapothecary.com/candle-molds/ You'll need to buy two molds, one for the inner candle part (3 inch mold) and one for the outer candle part (4 inch mold). Here's a complete how-to we did as a guest blog post: www.kenarry.com/sea-glass-candle-make-embedded-candle/ J&K

Are you supposed to light it? Doesn’t the sea-glass fall when the candle goes down?

Great question! The wick size (width) determines how much of the center of the candle will melt down. When this candle burns, just the center melts and the sides with the sea glass remain intact. Here's the written how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/diy-candle-making-how-to-make-a-sea-glass-candle/ Cheers, Jennifer & Kitty

Hi Jenn, You can find candle mold sealer putty at craft stores. It looks like this: www.michaels.com/mold-sealers-by-artminds/10366582.html If you don't have mold sealer, you can try sticky putty. We have had success with the yellow or blue putty that you use to hang posters in a dorm room. Hope that helps! Jennifer & Kitty

Here's a great candle supply site with lots of molds: www.bulkapothecary.com/candle-molds/ If you are having trouble finding the embedding mold set you can just buy two separate molds, one for the inner candle part (3 inch mold) and one for the outer candle part (4 inch mold).
