One thing to note, is in ACTUAL horse herds, the Alpha of the herd IS always female, normally the eldist mare in the heard. Meanwhile the stallions DO take the 'guard role' in the herd, keeping watch for predators. Unlike say wolves or such, the leader of the herd ISN'T the biggest meanest horse in the herd, but the eldest and most intelligent. This...actually makes sense when you put this idea into Equestria.

There is, however, a lead mare, but she is second in command, and she is responsible for guiding the herd as well as finding food, water, and places to rest. The stallion is more like the protector, but still the leader. There is always more mares than stallions in a herd, and sometimes an older stallion will challenge the leader for his position. I didn't mean to offend you or call you out, I just wanted to tell you that it doesn't apply very well to MLP...

I always headcanoned that gender roles are reversed in Equestria.

It should hope it goes without saying that I don't share the views of there being a 'superior gender', but I think we should still address that such ideas DO exist for some.

Intresting fact about wild RL horses. Most of them are female (1 stallion to 9 mares on average) all males do in the heard is watch for preditors and fight them off (see male dominated in royal guard), as well as mate. The mares do everything else in the herd (see female dominated political arena and buisness world). If pony behavior RL was used to help form the basis for pony society, it could simply be that females are dominate in society due to long standing tradition rooted in genetics and instinctual behaviors.

This subject is actually somthing I noticed on my own and I was hoping to see someone touch on this topic. I think yes, mare superiority is an idea held by SEVERAL ponies in Equestria, not just a select few. I do think that stallions have a very specific stereo-typed role in Equestria, this role being the role of manual labor. It seems to me like the stallions of Equestria are not assumed to be very intelligent. You see, the first time any stallions (outside of AJ's family) interacted with the mane 6 was in the first grand galloping gala episode. The stallions pulled the carriage. In fact, in general, it is stallions who pull around carriages in the MLP universe. This task isn't seen as something that mares often do. If stallions are stereotyped as the muscley meat-heads of Equestria, then it would make sense that their brawn is valued in the Royal Guard. Also, MLP paints several stallions in an incompetent shade when it comes to matters of intelligence. For example, Braeburn loosing track of the CMM, and Trouble Shoes thinking his cutie mark meant something else entirely. Of course, there haven't been many male characters to observe, but those that have been present are not presented positively.

I was thinking something similar to that a week or so ago. I am in a FoE role play group and I was helping set the rules for IC (In Character) ruler ship and the topic came up about it being solely a matriarchy. Ultimately we decided to just let the players themselves decide. But it did spawn quite a few debates among the Admins and the players of the RP.

I can answer your gender role question easily. Its the natural order of horse society. Mares are the bosses of the herd, with one dominant female being the Lead Mare, while the stallions are the protectors and supporters of the herd and don't do any of the leading. They reflect this in the show. Honestly, I'm surprised you didn't research horse behavior and horse society.

It is somewhat common for the most dominant sex in a species to be the more brightly colored of the two. The females are very often duller than their male counterparts. However, I think Equestria, though ruled by primarily females, seems to be an equal place. Mares and Stallions seem to have similar jobs in similar positions as well. I wonder if, at least in the case of ponies, the rulers are female because females may be the only ponies that can become Alicorns, and Alicorns have the strongest magic overall. (Starswirl was amazing as well with much practice, but he wasn't an Alicorn. I think if anyone should have ascended, it would have been him. And yes, I know Celestia said Twi created magic which he never did, but Cadence did not.)

Actually Canned, when you see the royal guard almost ANYWHERE, they're either standing there, not being effective at all, caught, or not there when they need to be. I honestly don't know why Celestia keeps them around. Luna's we barely ever see, Twilight doesn't even have one, and Cadence's haven't really been seen in action. The guard isn't really applicable to any situation, and when they are, it usually ends badly. *cough* Chrysalis' invasion *coughcough*

I have a question, and maybe you can address this on your next mlp video. Why do you think was discord evil? Why do you think he was causing chaos? He is at least trying to be a good animal/person (whatever you'd call him) now, but think back to season 1, 2, and 3. He wanted pure chaos. Even now he gets a little out of hand or hoof. Maybe it was for love? Maybe he had a family, and Celestia did something to them? There probably IS at least an undercurrent of 'Mares are superior', and for a very simple reason: Celestia. She's powerful, she's basically the Pony definition of beauty, and she's been their ruler for what is effectively forever (and looks likely to carry on for the rest of forever as well). When your immortal demi-goddess/Queen is female, that's likely going to reinforce the notion of female superiority at least on an unconscious level, and maybe they even do it on purpose--fillies are told they can grow up to lead in various ways, from running the family farm or business to being powerful mages or whatever. Males are never told they can't do those things, but they don't have that single, shining role-model up there in Canterlot, and the females do.

My personal head canon is that Equestria in the past was, at least in some places, mare dominated but has since become egalitarian. So for example mares used to be considered to be better at leadership and more technical work and stallions considered effectively home makers in the sense of housework, DIY and protecting the house hold (hence the guard being male dominated). After the several national crises and the role stallion heroes, like Starswirl, played innhelping to stop them attitudes changed think women's roles in WW1 and 2. But for whatever reasons some idioms from that time are still around and a sizable amount of ponies still follow their gender roles but they can go against them should they wish.

Since there are more mares then stallions then some of the backround ponies have to be related like maybe bon bon and Octavia are sisters or maybe derpy and thunder lane are brother and sister or maybe even Lyra and Vinl (dont hate me for spelling that wrong if i did) are sisters

well at most ponyville is heavily populated by female mares I'm not sure about canterlot, cloudsdale, and manehattan or even the crystal empire those cities seem equal in both stallions and mares.

Another thought, maybe Equestria had a reverse woman's rights movement. Not likely, but it's a logical conclusion to assuming female domination stigma exists in Equestria. Just as the reverse does in ours.

Well, there might be an unpopular "Mare are better" mindset, since there are some women on Earth who have that opinion. I forgot who pointed this out but, someone mentioned that, as far as background ponies are concerned, there may be a "in universe" reason to why we see more Mares, at least in Ponyville. Being a rural town, the stallions could just be off working in the field. There seems to be as many stallions in the cities as as Mares and we see a a lot males during the plowing scene in "Winter Wrap up".

I think that the reason stallions are put in the royal guard is because they are seen as weak. It is pretty much the army, and I don't see ponies liking war too much. The opposite thing for our world is that we would assume the male is the one in the army and the female as the social worker. Most of us, for some reason, view the latter as the weakest whilst I can see the ponies of Equestria viewing the former as the weak ones. Equestria doesn't seem to really need them.

The reason stallions are under-represented is because this is a little girl's cartoon. When would you ever see a show like Hannah Montana give guys a spotlight? There are guys in the cast, but, since its target demographic is for girls, there are more girls that get more screentime. The same thing applies for shows like Spiderman or Batman. Since they're made for guys, there are more guys that get shown more often. I'm a girl, and I think that stallions are very under-represented in MLP. Heck, my favourite villain is a stallion, and he's reason I check Tumblr everyday to see how Coffee Talk is holding up. Most of the stallions in the cast are either family, love interests or background ponies.

On the topic of the guards,honestly how much have they helped? There pretty much banana guards (from adventure time)

I once saw a comedy video where it was set in a world where the gender roles were reversed and it was generally funny, until the very end. There was a stinger in which a young boy looks at a chart showing every U.S. president ever elected, which were all female in this alternate universe. That really struck me, and made me think about this whole people in power thing. When the leader, and all previous leaders, of the free world are all men, it makes sense for men to have a sort of ego. So in a world were the rulers are and always have been female, it is not hard for me to see this is a society where the gender ego falls on the female side of the gender spectrum.

Hmmm YEAH! That makes sense.

I believe that mares sort of do rule. Not trying to be sexist, but this show was originally made for younger girls. They didn't really expect videos about how Celestia came to rule over equestria or other topics. If this show was made more for boys, I'm sure they would have the mane six be stallions. It could be that stallions aren't viewed as weak per say. maybe their viewed as big and slow. I think this maybe what rainbow meant by not going easy on him. I mean it was an optical course and I think it's better to be fast and small to win those.

I say that the show was "manely" intended for the female audience.

I don't look at it as superiority but just a numerical difference between Mares and Stallions. Though it is kind of fitting for mlp to have a majority female power structure.

If the situation had been reveresed it would have changed nothing. Rainbow Dash just so happens top be the Mare of the 2. Of course, it also proved that the Brute Strength benefited Big Mac very little and ended up disqualify him as well. You could have seen it as Pegasus being superiot to Earth Pony, if it had been permitted by the choice of words. Which it wasn't in this case. That oppinion has been expressed earlier in the show.

TBH, I don't really think about that sort of thing. However, I think that some Stallions can be stronger than mares, and vice versa.

They could be females or some other sex that might have appearance traits similar to what we think is characteristic to males (Female could have penis. Of course it would serve just to pee then). Also In the episode with cakes foals it was lady cake who needed to rest while mister cake was the one who could walk and talk to pinkie so I think it means that it's rather like with humans/real life horses.

i think it makes sense at least governmentally in their society that mares would dominate in their society thanks to the celestia and luna setting the standard of places of power being based upon an arguably more selfless, almost parental duty of being driven by empathy and love to protect and prevent/resolve conflict in order to ensure the happiness of their subjects, which is arguably, a more feminine mentality. And though we might consider that as an ideal to strive for in our society, fact is our ruling bodies often come more down to ownership and exploitation than out of a desire to accomplish what is best for those they have taken responsibility for. And, well, yeah, in our culture "ownership" is considered a very masculine thing, and has been for a very long time, and the expectations for how men should act is still very steeped in them attempting to own and act based upon said ownership being done for the sake of their property benefiting them. Being "kings of their castles" so to speak, with the inherent expectations of power abuse of these titles, such as of how a king does not exist for the benefit of their peasants, or a ceo doesn't exist for the sake of their employees, the ways in which this sort of mentality of the use of power pervades the concepts of masculinity don't really have as much a place in equestrian society as it exists under Celestia's example. And encouraging the male ponies of that world to live up to our human standards of masculinity despite living in an environment with rulers so tempered by empathy and self sacrifice? Perhaps it's not so big a surprise that there would some side effects.

Well I mean if you think of it, the two bad rulers Equestria has had were male, discord and sombra, which may be why they put females on a higher pedestal. The only other rulers I can think of are females, which are celestial, Luna, cadence, and twilight to an extent.

I thin equestria does have the mare dominance over stallions. Mares all always in high places. Before twilight it was princess Luna and Celestia who defended everything. Princess is a female term. And now it is princess twilight. Out of all of twilight canterlot friends one was a stallion. And all the other known male characters are at the low end.
