Cancer Treatment: IMRT (Radiation Therapy)

If you like this animation, LIKE us on Facebook: www.nucleusinc....
www.nucleusinc.... This 3D medical animation describes the process of intensity modulated radiation therapy, or IMRT, including the use of CT scans and the linac machine. Intensity modeled radiation therapy is a procedure used to treat certain forms of cancer, to kill cancer or control cancer growth. Cells in the body grow and divide as part of the normal cell cell cycles, when cells become cancerous however they can continue to grow uncontrollably. Radiation can be used to kill cancer. Intensity modulated radiation therapy can be used to deliver a higher does of radiation to the the cancer cells while sparing the healthy tissue around the cancer cells.

My wife started her first round of radiation treatment earlier today. 29 more sessions to go. We found out about her brain tumor when she was about three months pregnant with our first child. She delivered a healthy baby boy on 1/1/2023. The child is still healthy, and my wife’s tumor has not grown since we found it. Keep the prayers coming! - 1/30/2023

My parents had moved in with him and took care of everything, so he was at least at peace and never had to worry about anything. He had a very aggressive type of cancer, and it ended up killing him in just a few months. Radiation didn't help in his case. God bless all those who suffer from this disease. The treatment doesnt hurt a bit :) The collimator is just the part of the machine that shapes the shape of the radiation beam to the shape of ur tumor. Some medical LINACS are noisy most arent so bad. The noise is produced from the motors driving the gantry arm and the magnetron. Its not that noisy. Cells that arent cancerous can heal. Cells that are cancerous cant. so altho other cells get a dose, they heal between treatments, where the cancerous cells die :) just an awesome machine.

@@trivenireddy9669Hello, I finished my treatment just under 2 weeks ago. I will not lie to you, treatment was the most difficult 6 weeks of my life. I had both weekly Chemo and Radiation 5 days a week, the Chemo I had immediate side effects to of extreme nausea and constantly feeling run down with no energy. The Chemo also made my immune system incredibly weak and just as treatment was ending, I was hospitalized for a week with a very severe case of Pneumonia. Right now as I type this i am just 4 days out of the hospital but feeling much better. As for the radiation. The first week went by with no issues, week 2 is when i started to get side effects of thick and ropy saliva. Week 3 I started to get sores inside my mouth, swollen bottom lip, and also my beard started falling out so I had to get rid of my beard. Overall in week 3 the radiation mask started to get really tight with multiple areas of my face starting to swell. I also started to have problems with my nose, although not sure if this was because of radiation or Chemo, but the inside of my nose was incredibly dry and felt swollen and was difficult to breathe through my nose. Also around week 3 my throat started to really hurt to swallow. Lastly my neck got extremely red and dry cracked skin, like i got a bad sun burn. These side effects stayed consistent throughout the end of treatment. Right now almost 2 weeks after treatment my nose is much better, but still difficult to breathe through at times. The sores in my mouth went away and my bottom lip is almost back down to normal size. I feel like a lot of the facial swelling has gone down as well. The redness of my neck has gone down by about 50%, The thick saliva in my mouth has improved a lot but still not normal saliva. Overall I feel that i hit Rock Bottom as treatment was ending, spending a week in the hospital help accelerate my recovery no doubt. I am 42 years old and was in fit shape heading into treatment, it really effects everyone different. While it effected me more on the severely, others may have almost no side effects. Let me know if you have any questions or want to know more!

the brain can regenerate. even when it cant, synaptic connections are produced (dentrites) from existing cells to create links to areas of the brain for learning and adaptation. different areas of the brain are able to function instead of the damaged part. even if you lose function of your legs, it is possible to regain function this way. that would only occur however with the subject struggling to walk and allowing the brean to re-learn how to communicate with those parts of the body

I am all for using the available treatments, like Radiation, but I do believe this is underestimating the possible risks very much. Like, becoming sterile, I should say, is a bit more important than temporary hair loss! (I know someone who survived and had kids afterwards ... sometimes you do not get sterile. But it is a fairly common side effect.)

No radiation is safe for humans period ! I feel very sorry for the people being tricked into doing this ! They only care about profit and they train doctors to believe that radiation actually helps ! And sure it might in the beginning but the radiation will always cause more cancer down the road ! And if it was so safe why are all the nurses administrating these drugs dying of cancer just after or just before retirement! I also feel for the young doctors that want to help people get better! They have no idea that they are being taught a lie !

Yes, but non cancerous cells will get affected and die. Those cells can't heal and have no use anymore. And because we don't use our full capacity all the time, the brain is able to relearn functions that has been lost. You're right about the brain being able to adapt.

However, as well as saving lives by treating tumours, stray radiation also has the ability to damage healthy tissue and it can cause side effects ranging from skin damage and fatigue to serious organ damage, depending on the part of the body that has been treated and the dose delivered to the healthy tissue.
