I love Liam! And Cancer Bats are absolutely amazing. I mean they are one of the best Hardcore or Netallic Hardcore or whatever you want to call them bands out there. The Spark album is probably my favorite album of theirs to date

Excellent timing, I've been checking out some hardcore recently myself. Although I'm mostly still on just the big '80s bands so far--Black Flag, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat.....but I definitely want to check out some stuff from the '90s era and later as well eventually. I've always been more of a metal/prog guy but the unrestrained raw energy of hardcore feels pretty refreshing. It's just a different take on the same aggression that metal has.

THIS. Love the energy...and when it gets a little more metallic it's pretty much unstoppable.

Can't go wrong with Earth Crisis. Definitely give them a listen. Very metallic hardcore and highly influential. Coalesce is dope too. So are, well, Cancer Bats ha. But yeah, being a half punk, half metalhead, metallic hardcore and crossover thrash are right up my alley. Might be in yours too.

@@jakefoster5611 Sorry just seeing your reply. I'll definitely have to check out all 3 of the bands you mentioned at some point since I keep hearing their names come up over and over again, especially around crossover/early metalcore. I will say this though, even speaking as more of a metal guy, I care less about heavy than I do about interesting. Some of my favorite hardcore-ish bands being Dillinger Escape Plan, At the Drive-In, Converge, Project 86 (not as well known but they were my favorite band for a while growing up)...yes they all get heavy but they all have something interesting and unique happening in their music as well, not always technical or progressive per se, but just something distinctive and cool. I feel like all the 80s hardcore bands from my original comment had that too, whether it was varied music or interesting/funny lyrics or you name it. But right now I'm most of the way through the discography of another highly influential '80s hardcore band, and one of the pioneers of crossover thrash--Agnostic Front---but tbh I find a lot of their songs really boring and tiresome and stale, despite probably being the most consistently heavy '80s hardcore band I've listened to. There are a few exceptions like the stuff from "Victim in Pain" and some of the later singles like "Gotta Go" but for the most part? A resounding meh. There's like no subtlety or nuance and so many of the songs just feel like they're retreading the same ground. At this point I'm just looking to be done with them, since I've been checking out full discographies for these bands as best as I can through KZread, rather than just the top songs or albums or whatever. So it's kind of a slow process and it's not always good, but I get a fuller idea of each band. I did also just start checking out Fugazi today though with 13 Songs and I'm enjoying them a lot more so far, not as heavy but way more interesting. I'll continue exploring both traditional hardcore and the more metallic/crossover stuff, but I might ultimately feel a stronger pull towards post-hardcore in general since its all about taking that sound and doing something different with it.

The Swarm, what a band. My favourite of the five bands he mentions here (by far). Canada had some amazing hardcore bands back in the day: Ire, Chokehold, Left for Dead, Union of Uranus, Drift, The Black Hand, One Eyed God Prophecy, Haymaker... I'm not even sure if Canadians realise the significance of their hardcore scene(s) on the international stage.

@@BangerTV I had a quick listen because I'd not heard of them before. It's OK but not really my thing. I've heard lots of bands doing that kind of thing, though I'm sure it would be great live. For me, the Canadians understood what Rorschach were doing on "Protestant" better than anyone else (except for perhaps the German/Bremen bands). Canadian HC records like Union of Uranus, the Drift 7" and (later) Ire's "I Discern an Overtone..." EP. That stuff is game changing, way more interesting than Converge, who were pretty over-rated in my view. I also wondered whether Gorguts knew of Ire before they released Obscura, there are similarities...

Fuckin Petitioning the Empty Sky... Spectacular album, although I prefer You Fail Me, especially the remix. And Chris Colohan is such an important and often overlooked figure in metal and hardcore... The Swarm, Cursed, Burning Love all that shit. Glad he was given a shout out!

  • @theaspiration

Petitioning the Empty Sky is excellent, along with the rest of Converge's catalogue. Nice Cave In plug too. Until Your Heart Stops it just as important to me as any other record from that era, including Botch and Dillinger (both huge favorites of mine).
