Fox clearly never understood the franchise. The best thing they could have done was adapt the Dark Horse comic that was a direct sequel to Aliens.

It was exactly what fans actually wanted ,not to mention that ending was pretty much a setup for adaptation alien earth war if alien 4 had followed that storyline
A lot of the early Alien 3 stuff has been around for sometime. Eric Red took the farm idea Renny mentions and placed it on a ship, which s where the alien-animal hybrid idea started. The best pitch was Clive Barker's: If it's Alien 3 or "cubed", what happens when something eats the being that contains the Alien gestation
Someone eventually made this film: “A Quiet Place #1.”
What?! I never knew this. I STILL have the "Alien Earth War" comics (Darkhorse Comics) that I picked up in the late 80's which was awesome! That story was crazy cool. BTW dude you and I are on the same page as far as being diehard Alien fans. You would LOVE the Alien Earth War comics if you haven't read them yet. I remember seeing Alien 3 in the theatre and was like what the hell is this? It grew on me over the years but definitely was a bad move after the masterpiece that was Aliens.

The franchise just ran it's course after aliens. They couldn't come up with a great script involving carrie henn as newt. They could have changed the actress with somebody else to play her in the third movie. But i think at that point fox didn't know what to do with alien 3. There were things they could've done, but I think they just lacked the imagination to come up with them. They needed to allow them to come back to gateway station and figure out a setup from there instead of sticking alien eggs on the sulaco with zero explanation of how they got there. The derelict ship very well could've been out of range of the blast radius so you just have a story where the company goes back to retrieve samples then later on all hell breaks loose at gateway station. Perfect setting for the 3rd film.

If you want a good replacement for Alien 3, check out the Aliens comic by Dark Horse by Mark Verheiden and Mark A. Nelson. It was a direct continuation of Aliens, following the story of Hicks and Newt. After Alien3 was made, the comic was adapted to the novel Earth Hive, and the names changed from Hicks and Newt to Wilkes and Billie. Reprints of the comic have since changed the names to Wilkes and Billie, but know that origianlly it was a DIRECT sequel to the films.

Sigourney Weaver _refused_ to do Alien3 until WB promised her a script that had no guns in it. She signed onto Aliens without reading it, and wouldn't have signed on had she known there were any guns (Weaver is _demented_ in her anti-gun beliefs). _She's_ the primary reason the Alien movies failed - big time. She of course compromised her beliefs for Alien Resurrection - once the check had enough zeroes.

I don’t mind Alien 3 and the Assembly Cut makes it that much better, i grew up with all the films so i have a soft spot for Alien 3, Resurrection though i can't stand, it's a parody of the series and i only watch it if i want a guilty pleasure experience.
Absolutely love Alien 3. The birth of the Dragon is such a haunting scene. The eulogy, music and the birth of the xeno all mixed together, it's just incredible (the one with the dog).
Hicks & Newt are still alive and living happily in a bungalow in Coventry 😑
It's OK in some parts and I liked the fact that they went with a singular Xenomorph but hate the dog hybrid thing. But Aliens should be in space and not Earth to keep more Sci-Fi.
I liked Alien 3 but didn’t love it, I liked some of the ideas such as the setting in a prison but I think a Prison on board a Space Station would have been cooler & why not still have more than one Xenomorph imagine a Xenomorph Prison riot and I can also see there was too many cooks in the kitchen on what was suppose to be David Fincher’s Alien 3. I would have loved that pay-off teased in Alien & Aliens of Weyland-Yutani getting their hands on a Xenomorph Queen Specimen & see how they would try to weaponise it maybe even using the prisoners on board a Space Station Prison as illegal test subjects for all kinds of dark experiments etc

We kind of got the corn (wheat) field thing in Covenant.
I thought this was well known - there was an early teaser trailer for Alien 3 with a slow egg reveal and a voiceover saying "this time on Earth, everyone can hear you scream"
The Alien 3 assembly cut is a vast improvement over the theatrical release. Unfortunately, the tech needed didn't exist.
The "Director's Cut" re-edit for the Blu-ray release was brilliant, IMO. I highly recommend giving it a chance.
Give us Aliens: Earth Wars
🎶Shut up and Charles Dance with me!🎶
The original teaser makes it seems like they were going to earth
I don't think a cornfield would have worked... we already had Critters which is essentially the same premise. Would have been more interesting for a urban city outbreak. Especially if you actually linked it with Bladerunner universe or something akin to it.
I appreciate Alien 3 for trying to take the series back to its horror roots. It had an impossible challenge in trying to live upto Aliens. The world, atmosphere, cinematography and score were fantastic! I also think that the Alien design was the best in the series. The rod puppet special effects range from great (for the time) to abysmal. I remember when I first watched the workprint cut, I couldn't believe how much it improved the film overall.... I can only hope that one day Fincher puts together a cut closer to his vision (if possible) with some updated special effects! Highly unlikely but one can dream!
I actually love how Alien 3 turned out for the most part (including the deleted scenes form the extended cut). I thought it was a great ending to the Ripley story.

The best in the franchise
I think a good idea for Alien 3 would have been a battle on Gateway to stop the Aliens getting to Earth. It would have rounded out the trilogy quite well because the whole conflict has been between the company trying to capture an alien for profit, and Ripley and the soldiers trying to destroy them. A battle on Gateway would have seen all 3 sides, the Aliens, the Company, and then Ripley, along with a small resistance, trying to stop them.
That Alien 3 would have basically been Aliens in Bladerunner, which sounds awesome to me.
I really appreciate the version that we got because I know the crap the director(s) went through to make it. There are some issues with it, however I think the majority can be attributed to studio interference.
I remember Paul WS Anderson talking in the AvP dvd extras about the teaser for Alien 3 saying 'On Earth, Everyone Can Hear Your Scream' and his disappointment with the finished film. I know AvP isnt great but at least it wasnt missold 😅
I think the play for "Alien on earth" was not Aliens running through a cornfield, but Aliens in a Blade Runner type mega city. The look and feel of that would match the Alien universe aesthetic.
I thought William Gibson’s part 3 screenplay was the great missed opportunity for the franchise.
I like all of the original alien film series. There were a lot of good character actors in #3 which carried it .
Audible has an audio drama that uses the original script for Alien 3. If you want to hear what it would have been like you can do it there.
Alien in a cornfield? I'm glad that never happened.
So this is a different version than the original William Gibson script that got adapted into a comic book a couple years ago
i love the assembly cut of Alien3. It is bleak, it is dirty and gives the Riplay story a fitting end. The Xeno always wins in the end
The first draught was set in a monk colony on a mechanical wooden moon. Sounds nuts, but I would LOVE to have seen that.
Great video. I grew to see Alien movies 1 - 4 as 1 Horror from Sci-Fi, 2 Horror from Sci-Fi and Action, 3 Horror from Sci-Fi and Drama, and lastly 4 Horror from Sci-Fi and Comedy.
I would have loved to see William Gibson's version. I don't like the idea of Alien on Earth, cornfield or not.
Just so you all know, KZread is pushing your archive videos more than your main channel.
Alien3, for me, represented everything that could go wrong from concept, to script, and then production in the movie business. There were so many conflicting rumours swirling around at the time, first one director, then another director, yet another script writer, and so on and so on. Fincher became a cheap option for something that had spiralled out of control long before he was brought onboard to direct. At the time he made the best film he could given the applied budgetary restraints, but the damage had already been done and the studio wanted a film released as per contract in as quicker time as possible. Is it any wonder it has so many mixed opinions from the fans of the franchise?
Having aliens on a futuristic farm would have been awesome. The cool future farm tech and a largescale farming operation would have made for amazing set pieces and action scenes.
Mrh, there is a chap making his own cut of alien 3, using the assembly cut and theatrical release. He has also been painstakingly remastering the dodgy effects and lightings. He’s funded this himself. If you do some digging online you can find the webpage. Personally I love alien 3. So under appreciated. Dark, nihilistic. Proper sci-fi horror.
I've had torn feelings about Alien 3 over the years. The egg on the Sulaco is what bothers me the most now. The Hicks/Newt stuff angered me as a kid, but it doesn't bother me as much as the plothole with the egg on the Sulaco. Its also just so contrived to have Ripley being not only the sole survivor again, but conveniently is infected with a Queen embryo. However, Ridley Scott's lazy Covenant gave me new appreciation for Alien 3.
Having the Aliens on earth is a terrible idea. In a cornfield?
I just want to say that I like those Mobile Suits Gundam's on your shelf!! (Pretty sure one is a GP-01/fb)
Obviously Hicks and Newt being killed off sucked but i love Alien 3 nowadays. The extra scenes added were overall pretty good but i thought the Ox addition was a downfall, even though i understand why they offered an alternate alien birth.
I saw Alien 3 in theaters when I was nearly 13 years old. I grew up on Aliens. I thought Alien was ok but slow and old feeling. As an 80’s kid I felt the same way about Rocky and Rocky 4, and A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. Aliens was tense, scary and a good action thriller. So watching Alien 3, and seeing how the happy ending of sorts of Aliens from my youth was undone in such painful and bleak circumstances with them killing off Hicks and Newt, it was just sad. The whole damn movie was sad. Cause you knew Ripley was gonna die too. F** off movie ( said in Scottish accent )
Signs more than effectively used‘aliens in the cornfield’ trope.
Once I saw the alternate version of Alien 3 it made a lot more sense. The alien comes out of an ox not a dog so the special effects scene of the alien getting up off the floor looked normal once it came out of an ox not a dog. They spliced the same scene in with the dog version and the alien appeared to be just as big as the dog when it had just burst out, so that was some choppy garbage the studio did. All the extra footage of the outside of the colony on the surface of the planet was great as well in the alternate and the biggest thing was keeping the part where they actually capture the alien and Golic sets it loose. In the original version I remember in the movie theater when they got to the scene where they were implementing the plan to capture the alien, it was the first part of the film where things were starting to get really exciting and the studio just butchered it and cut out them actually capturing the alien and instead chopped it up so it all blew up in their face. That actually sucked the life right out of the film when it was just starting to get good so yeah, really fckd up the feel and pacing of it, but the final parts of the film with the tunnels, high speed chases, and lead works are all really badazz imo. I think there's a master cut between the original and the alternate if I could make it myself because not everything they added into the alternate was needed, but def the Ripley washing up on shore, the oxen, and the alien capture and Golic subplot all needed to be in there. If you view Alien 3 as a stand alone piece of sci-fi horror it's actually a really good film, it's just that they way they cheat and put an alien on the Sulaco, kill Hicks & Newt off is just really bad decision making as far as I'm concerned. My story would've required no aliens on the Sulaco. I really don't like that after the fact cheating to work a monster into a sequel.
The version by William Gibson, involving Lance Henriksen (Bishop), Michael Biehn (Hicks) and Rebecca Jorden (Newt) is the best one that could have been filmed as it followed the story previously established in Aliens 2.
The story of aliens on Earth could go only 2 ways 1. Realistic - fool scale war and humanity lose at the end. 2. Unrealistic (corn field) - Aliens for some reason would be present only in one location. Guess what would they have chosen.

Alien 3 was the first Alien film I ever watched, I was only 9 years old at the time, and my Dad let me stay up late and watch it with him, haha. So, it holds a special, nostalgic place in my heart. Personally, I love it.
I absolutely hated ALIEN3 on its release - I remember waiting eagerly for the release in the cinema and was very keen on reading up on it going through various articles at the time - And the ideas that FOX and the filmmakers had which really intrigued me were the ones by William Gibson, Vincent Ward, and Renny Harlin - The cornfield idea was from Vincent Ward's version, which was on a wooden planet, and this version was a complete horror movie version in the realms of something Satanic like THE OMEN and CHILDREN OF THE CORN etc etc. This was a frightening one but the studio let Vincent Ward go. I loved the Renny Harlin version which was the Earth set one which had an 'ALien train', and some warped horrific visions by HR Giger. When Fincher came on board the idea was screwed up and not great. Fans and audiences ripped it apart, the scale and look of it didn't compare to the previous movies. Things improved when RESURRECTION came out, which went back the more science fiction feal with a bit of fun (Yes it got great reviews at the time). However the quality of movies has dropped since then, and now I look at ALIEN3 with affection, it's not the worst in the series anymore, that title goes to COVEnANT and PROMEthEUS.
I think Harlin's version could have been great, or it could have ended like Alien 3 that we got, who knows? I'd love to see the futuristic Earth Harlin had visioned.

I know there's a comic out there that basically is a visual novel of this script. (I think, I last heard about the project a while ago. There's also a comic about the original story treatment by Ron Sushett as well, too. Before Ridley Scott had made some tweaks.)
I had a very vivid dream after watching Aliens. The Aliens were jettisoned down in cryogenic pods onto my school yard and we were all standing around looking at them through the frosted glass. Then the glass doors started to raise and everyone made a panicked scramble for the exits 😂
Isn't Sigourney Weaver on record saying she just wasn't interested in a Xenomorphs on Earth film? The Vincent Ward treatment for Alien 3 would have been incredible. The William Gibson treatment would have been an Aliens-esque blast (with elements of the Thing for good measure). Interestingly, elements from both these treatments have turned up in later Alien films - not least the cornfields (from Ward) and infections (from Gibson) in Covenant. A Quiet Place is an excellent aliens on Earth film, but you have to go micro - drill down into a single, essentially finite, location - the farm and farm house. So it can be done - just within boundaries.
You know that's canceled version of Alien 3 sound a bit similar to the dark horse comic Alien story Earth War It's really good story I wish that became a movie.

Alien 3 has to be one of the worst mistakes in cinema history. I remember being sat in the theatre when the lights came back on just being stunned and beyond words. You could hear a pin drop in the packed cinema. People filed out without saying a word. That crap was peak Rian Johnson levels of subverting expectations at a time when Kathleen Kennedy was still making lousy coffee and picking up the dry cleaning. ‘The Last Jedi’ or ‘Terminator Dark Fate’ of Alien. It killed the franchise and its never properly recovered from it since. Only when the internet came around could you find actual idiots with zero taste to defend the monstrosity because ‘misunderstood masterpiece’. 😂 Jesus! Even Brian Glover was terrible in it and it takes a special kind of awful to make me not enjoy watching Brian Glover. I sat and watched Alien and Aliens with my son recently because he’s gotten into the ‘Alien Isolation’ game and we thoroughly enjoyed both movies. After finishing Aliens he pointed to the box-set and asked if we were going to watch Alien 3 and the rest of the fan fic. I gently took him to one side and explained that you never go Alien 3 and beyond. No doubt one day he’ll disregard my advice and end up watching it anyway, and when that day comes I just hope I have the psychological tools on hand to be able to help him deal with his PTSD.
Ohhh what could have been. Then again, a David Fincher Alien movie should be incredible. But if it's being mismanaged, no matter what idea they green lit would have had issues.
'Took place in cornfields'?? Is that how Marvel comics grab that idea and made a comic series few years ago?

The first draft of Alien Resurrection had xenomorphs chasing soldiers in a wheat field on the ship.
Harlin also doesn't have the greatest track record. Definitely a few amazing movies, but also several duds
A corn field? That's all they got? Come on. Have a ship full of eggs crash land in a zoo or a jungle or something. Give us some xenomorph variants for once. Somewhere online I saw concept art of a xenomorph that came from a velociraptor host. I know that's probably to outlandish for a movie but damn that thing looked metal AF.
I would think most young fans at the time were terrified of Alien as i was and had nightmares and thoughts of Xenomorphs on earth. I always envisioned on in the house. After Aliens i assumed a third one would take place on Earth
I still recall the moment the Xenomorph literally burst onto the screen from John Hurt (no pun) in the original Alien film. The whole cinema erupted out of their seats. Brilliant movie moment, Also, the focus on the ship's cat as it witnesses the demise of a crew member. Which somehow made it worse than a gratuitous scene. It was left to your imagination as to what was happening. The cat clearly wasn't enjoying the view. The boss fight at the end of Aliens is epic. Ripley has to be one of the best movie characters. I never got invested in Alien 3. I saw the promo and thought "What the hell is Ripley doing on a prison ship?". It was a turn off. Don't know why, it just never attracted me. Maybe because I felt they'd trashed Ripley and I didn't want to see the character portrayed like that?
I think it would’ve been aesthetically jarring to go from the Nostromo to Hadley’s Hope to…. A farm in the Midwest of the US. Seeing Xenomorphs in any environment that feels even remotely contemporary just doesn’t sell for me personally. Even if the characters feel relatable. If it had an incredibly industrial, lived in future, aesthetic outside of the cornfield then maybe it could’ve worked. but I just don’t see how Ripley, Hicks, and Newt would’ve logically ended up involved in the scenario in a farm somewhere.
It seems like after James Cameron's effort that a creative vacuum surrounded the franchise and their was much better directions they could've went. In some ways this idea harkens to a novel "Starship Troopers." Perhaps they should've mined that premise for further sequels. They could've given the military a very good reason to need a bio-weapon, instead of leaving it as some nebulous idea. That would've organically led to new characters, new missions, maybe new threats. Some would argue they did something like that in one of the sequels, but that didn't go anywhere exciting or very compelling. Maybe they could've made a really good story after Resurrection, but I think by that time money losses, among other things, made it too troublesome to go on.
