For shea moisture, I don't think that the issue was that they included other races. The issue was that they didn't include any model with type 4, kinky curly hair. And seeing as it represents the majority of their customers, that was really crappy of them to do.

They also changed the formula with no warning whatsoever. So instead of making a line that was more inclusive to the customer base they were expanding to, they took established products that were working for people (specifically people with type 4, kinky/curly hair), switched up the formula on them, and left them confused as to why the same products they were just using weren’t working the same anymore. I ended up having to switch to a new brand because of the change.

I felt pretty offended when Bianca tried to make it seem that black women were mad that they’re now including white women in their marketing. I understand she’s biracial, but this isn’t a thing of jealousy between black women or white women, this had to do with owner not including the audience that put him on the map. More insulting the brand included this red haired white girl to talk about how she was so oppressed as a white girl… bc she had red hair/waves or whatever…. It was extremely tone deaf when the only “black” representation there was a half white woman. Try being told your hair as God intended it is “unprofessional” or nappy even when it is moisturized and styled. It was just disgusting and tone deaf af.

I think that once a product is cancelled, it's likely that people stop following their progress to even KNOW that they listened or changed, and in that time find so many other products that work just as good, if not better... then there's no reason to return to the former.. That's why I love this community of influencers so much, bc you reduce that learning curve, should people WANT to go back.

I think a large part of that is...people are so used to companies just not caring. Not listening. Not changing. And yk I can't blame them because there are dozens and dozens of companies that KNOW their products have ingredients that straight up cause hair loss and....never change that or even acknowledge it. And so it's honestly rare when a company listens, apologizes, and changes their ways.

@@Spokentruths725 the funny thing is that the ingredients in Ecostyler are in their beloved Mane Choice braid gel, Innersence I create Hold, TGIN Bomb, Camille Rose Lavender Gel etc. Moreover, the lady that started the cancellation for Eco Olive just made a video that it was possible she got an expired or counterfeit product!

Let’s be honest the “organic” “non toxic” community is ruining hair care brands with their disinformation. I am not against natural based cosmetics, but suddenly everyone has become a chemist. How about we start questioning certain methods people are using to take care of their hair like the curly girl method, no poo method, or not using sulphates, etc.

I totally agree. The chemophobia in the natural hair community is really frustrating. Brands are changing formulas that are FINE, to cater to people whose primary understanding of cosmetic science is that "natural" is better. It isn't, it's a lot more nuanced than that.

@@ChristsChemist As a person who is a Cancer Survivor I'm going to say in my opinion based on what we are told to avoid in the Cancer community that all synthetic chemicals should be used with caution. All "organic" chemicals should be used with caution. and in both groups all chemicals should be used after research. Quantities matter. Personal Chemistry matters. I would tell everyone to lean more towards organic choices rather than synthetic overtime many chemicals build up in the system rather than flushing out over a few hours. Synthetic chemicals are the ones causing troubles in the cancer community.Also healthy hair starts with diet, type of water used to wash, types of chemicals used for maintenance... Note I said healthy hair not pretty hair, "pretty" hair is an aesthetic and subject to what the individual see's as "pretty"

A lot of formulations have a small amount of isopropyl alcohol in order to get ingredients to mix properly. It's isn't enough to dry out your hair, and is typically near the end of the list.

There are also moisturizing alcohols. Fatty alcohols are long chains and differ in appearance, texture, and performance from what we normal think of alcohol, like an ethyl alcohol. If you see lauryl, stearyl or oleyl alcohol that’s a fatty alcohol and great for hair or skin.

Regarding Mielle, it was both the wife and husband. The husband did the calling but the wife made negative posts on her video and subliminally spoke negative about her on IG. I have not made a Mielle purchase since. They never apologized so they are still cancelled. Never used Deva Curl and wouldn't try at this point.

I stopped canceling product ingredients after the inventor of the curly girl method's product line was canceled. Devacurl proved that all-natural ingredients may not be healthy. A little water-based silicone in your conditioner isn't that dangerous. And fruit-based waxes give added define to type 4 hair without damaging it.

Also different things work for different people. I cant use a sulfate free shampoo. I have tried many and they just font work for me. So there is no need to cancel anything if it doesn't work for you

I never thought of Deva Curl as an all natural brand. I never heard them promote themselves as all natural. I never had a problem with DC but I had cheaper that worked just as well for me.

When did the creator get canceled?! Missed that news! But CGM is so much more than products. It’s also about using less products and simplifying your routine and letting your natural hair do it’s thing. The curly girl book teaches about washing and drying and how to apply product too.

I was so strict when I started my CURLY hair journey..and yes it worked..(for a year CLEAN PRODUCTS)...NOW I use all kind of BRANDS, CURLY products and my hair is better than ever🙋🏻‍♀️✅

I was a devacurl user but it never affected my hair, in fact my hair loved Deva. I think part of the reason was that I always rotate between 2 to 3 brands that I love. So I wasn’t using just Deva 100% of the time. That being said, you hit it on the nail that they were never accountable and blamed “user error,” yet they rebranded and reformulated which is awfully sus. Still haven’t tried their new products because like you said, we’re fortunate here in the US to have such a variety of great brands to choose from. Thanks again for the great video and that purple is 🔥.

Also side note… my husband walks in and goes, is she testing a brad mondo color? (No shade to him what so ever, love him) but I said no, she would never use that. And he goes, oh, because of all the silicone? SO PROUD OF THE HUBBY! We clearly watch a lot of Bianca Renee together 😅

I was watching a hair video in bed one night and the next day as I was playing with my hair my husband commented on a few things. When he saw my amazed face he said, I was listening to the video last night. Too cute!

The problem with these brands it's their behaviour and lack of regard for the people that are paying for their products. Some of these companies are using products that causes scalp burns and irritations. Mielle has not apologized to the youtuber. Some companies lack morals and it's all about making money.

💯 I think it's really crappy that people will pick and choose what companies (and people) they're willing to "cancel", while being dismissive of others because "Well I like _these_ products!" or "I wasn't _personally_ offended by them, so what's the big deal?" Everyone always clutches their pearls about "cancel culture" and how "it doesn't work" or that it's "pointless", but for me-- because I'm a fan of Swoop, my take is; It's not about "cancelling" anybody, it's about getting them to take *accountability* for their actions.

With Mielle I wanted to try them but didn’t have the chance before the scandal. I watch that KZreadr and the whole situation was horrible. So I cancelled. I still want to try their products because I hear they are good. But they never apologized. In fact they dug their heels in to NOT apologize. I don’t think they would do that to a larger influencer like you…but they did to a smaller influencer bc they knew they could get away with it. Gives me bullying vibes and I don’t like that.

Yea it was their rice water collection. And the influencer actually liked some of their other products but did not care for this line. But the owners husband called her personal phone from her purchase records and they basically harassed this women for a bit. It was bad. But I still believe everyone is entitled to feel how they feel, support who they want and spend their money how they want.

When they literally HARASSED an influencer for giving her HONEST OPINION… I would think that she would take that personally, that she can’t trust the brand to not misuse her private info if she doesn’t give them a positive review, cultural differences I suppose because that’s a line you don’t cross in my book

I wouldn’t want to support a company that treat ppl like dirt! unapologetic and blaming the customer for user error. As you said, different moral values.

The only brand I've personally "cancelled" is Deva curl. A year later and my curls still aren't the same, I'm still waiting on a refund for $300 worth of product and they never even tried to apologize to us. The Shea Moisture thing.. I totally understand that their brand was focused on black hair BUT I've used and loved their products for years and it was nice to see them recognize that so many of us use their stuff. But "cancelling" seems to be a personal choice over a personal experience.

@@MzJones721 same! I've been taking prenatal vitamins for a while and idk if they're helping but I'm seeing a positive change again. Try a deep cleanse ( I just use Apple cider vinegar in water) and a protein treatment once a month. Mine's slowly getting there, I hope yours does too ❤️ it's a terrible feeling. 25 years of hating my curls, finally fell in love and then Deva curl ruined them.

@@atyourbesturluv.7106 If you read my comment, you shouldn't be. Us as in women who aren't people of colour. I know SM has mainly marketed towards women of colour and that's wonderful! I'm half Hispanic but considered "white" and use their stuff, too.

The only thing I’d caution with cancelling brands due to ingredients is that some curlies love silicones so reformulating a product to not include silicones may not be beneficial for all curlies! So, I’d almost want to see brands coming out with similar products with a silicone AND silicone free line to be more inclusive. For example, Olaplex products with the silicones are AMAZING, but I’m sure there are ways they could reformulate to have a silicone free line for those who are following the CGM. There should be more brands that offer both instead of one or the other!

Yes because after trying to follow trends i found my hair works well with silicones. my hair iß finally not constantly breaking off in the shower. I permed my hair after 5 years being natural because it kept breaking. Now I'm back natural and this time around is much better since I've just listened to MY hair. It's a personal choice.

@@TB-vj8ie I’m the same way with sulfates! My scalp gets so dry and itchy without a proper cleanse with sulfates and dandruff shampoo (it’s impossible to find a dandruff shampoo without sulfates). Only using sulfates once a month or once every other month had me wanting to shave my head.

Yes this comment said what I was thinking. I tried to go silicone/sulfate free and my hair hated it. Then I found manes by mell and realized it was ok to just use products that work for me and not feel like I am doing it wrong or whatever bc I don't follow trends or certain rules. I am worried that some of my favorite brands will change their products to suit the CG method and not care about the rest of us who don't follow it.

Only brand I've cancelled and will never trust again is Devacurl. I lost my density and curl pattern due to their reformulation. The disgusting way they gaslight victims and tried to blame them instead of admitting fault was off-putting. They ended up refunding people, reformulating, and repackaging their products despite their claim that nothing was wrong with their products. All they had to do was apologize and recall the products and I would have trusted them to fix things. Companies have had to recall products before and that shows integrity. Devacurl lacks accountability

Hey! What products were called into question? I used their super cream, and the melt into moisture for years. I’ve noticed that my hair has thinned significantly and there are changes to my curl pattern as well. But I thought this was due to stress and just getting older (almost 30).

I was losing a lot of hair and my scalp was so itchy! Unfortunately though it was the first product I used when I started the curly girl method. So I thought it was just because I was transitioning. Kind of makes me mad though because I wasted like 3 months of the transitioning process because of how bad Devacurl was. Kind of ironic though that I stopped using it like a few days before the scandal came out.

I loved Mielle but chose to stop purchasing because of that situation. I think it was def an invasion of privacy and was downright unprofessional. I never saw a resolution to that situation and I just had a bad taste left in my mouth so I chose to find alternative products.

Hi Bianca! Totally agree with your opinion regarding the cancel culture. If a brand truly listens to their consumers and makes the appropriate changes, I would absolutely give them another chance. However, if a certain brand blames the consumer, claims nothing is wrong, yet changes formulation and packaging, it’s time to cut the cord for good. Thanks for talking about this!

I had problems with DevaCurl damage and I still have hair damage and scalp problems. I will never ever ever ever ever give that company a cent. I hate how they handled it.

I’m so happy to hear you say no to Deva Curl. I will never forget what happened to my daughters hair and just chunks of hair falling out. Her hair is so strong and healthy and could never go back. We are honestly traumatized.

In a situation like Deva Curl, they would be canceled because users lost their hair. After knowing this, I would never use Deva Curl. They can reformulate as many times as necessary, however I wouldn’t give them a try. Ulta gave me a Deva Curl sample last summer and I threw it in the trash.

I never say I cancel a product, I just said it didn't work for me.

I follow KevOnStage and That Chick Angel and they said in a podcast episode “I can’t cancel something I never supported haha”. That’s what I think about devacurl bc they were always too expensive for me to try but I do think it’s horrible how their products hurt so many people and as usual didn’t apologize and blamed the consumer. I don’t think I personally cancel things but I do try to put my few dollars with brands that seem to have missions I believe in. ❤️

Same. All lot of these brands got passed by me Bc of the ingredients. But I became natural in 2020 so I was easily able to find out about ingredients etc as opposed to someone who was natural in the 90s or early 2000s.

People canceled Cantu because it wasn’t black owned it catered to black ppl and the black dollar like African Pride. They was a phase where ppl was def being bullied into only using products from blackownedbusiness. It was a big thing. But like I said…imma buy what works for my hair. I think there is a difference between canceling an entire company and just simply not buying their products because their ingredients don’t work for you. Not buying a product doesn’t automatically equal a boycott. You boycott companies specifically because something is wrong with their business, how they operate, what they do, how they act, their values, etc. if you feel some type of way regarding Mielle because of their owners actions, then you probably shouldn’t review their products, even if your viewers want it. Stick to your moral values!

Awww that purple is everything 💜💜 Love the results….. I generally don’t jump on the Cancelled Culture bandwagon. If the product works good, I will continue to use it. Loved Cantu and never had an issue, and I still use Eco from time to time. never did use Deva curl so can’t say anything. I also do really like some Mielle products and haven’t cancelled them. It’s really all about if a product works or not AND THERE ARE SOOOOO MANY other products to use and if they don’t work, I keep it moving…. Appreciate this topic, because you hear so much about … we cancelling this or that.

I honestly feel like canceling brands is a personal choice & if I cancel the brand then I’m not using them. Every single brand you’ve mentioned, I still don’t use to this day and I’m not going back. Shea Moisture is okay, but I want don’t want okay for my hair. Cantu, Not Your Mothers Stylers, Jane Solutions, Eco Styler, Mielle Organics, and etc never worked for my hair. I’ve had brands change original formula that did work, like Uncle Funky’s Daughters, I’m no longer using that brand. Honestly, do what’s right for you, I don’t think this topic needed a video. If you truly, cancelled a brand you’re no longer using it.

I am a content creator too and it’s such a sticky situation reviewing “canceled” brands. Personally with Mielle, I’m not longer purchasing from them. But with the products I have from them, I’m doing reviews because I spent my money on them and some of my viewers are still curious how they might work🤷🏾‍♀️

Deva Curl lost all trust and respect permanently in my book. It’s so hard as a curly hair person to put your trust in a brand or hair stylist, anyone. Once they caused so much damage to ppl I can’t see why I would ever buy anything from them

For me, if I try something once and don’t like it, I’m probably never going back. I tired cantu gel recently and it makes my hair so dry, so I don’t think I’ll ever buy it again. Not because I’ve cancelled them, but because there are so many option for me to try out that won’t affect my hair like that and I don’t care to keep up to date on when a product is re-launching

For a moral stance, if I am an existing user and their products work excellent with my hair, I probably would continue to use them, however if I wasn’t a current user, I would never consider using them.

When I found out that people cancelled Cantu I was so confused! I have been using Cantu since I went natural in 2013, and I never stopped using their products. I always loved their products. They never bothered my hair, I understand that some people may not have the same experience as me, but if they fixed what people were mad about, why stay angry. Are we really living in an age where we "cancel" and move on without giving chances of redemption? Even if they aren't black owned, I don't understand why that is a reason to stop using their products. You can still support black owned businesses, but do we really have to stop buying from other businesses to do so? Especially a business that is catered to our hair, works for a lot of people, obviously listens and keeps our interest in mind, and is so affordable! I cannot tell you how many times I have had to pass on black owned business products because of the price. I don't have the coin to be spending on expensive hair products, especially when I know I do not have to. My entire hair care production collection is drug store priced, and I am perfectly fine with that because everything I use works wonders on my hair.

Thank you for what you are saying because it’s true. That’s why many people are over the black community bitching and whining. They aren’t going to support a business because it’s not black owned or because the products can be used by any race?!?! How is THAT not racists??? That’s not being a hypocrite? It’s all fine and dandy to have black owned businesses but why do we have to even mention race at all?? If a product is good it’s good. Also, give me a break on being oppressed or enslaved or that this is payback for slavery even though NO ONE today has even been enslaved. Martin Luther King Jr. said that he wanted to be judged based on the content of his character and not the color of his skin but many people of the black community ONLY wants to be judged and given things because of their skin color. Demanding reparation for stuff YOU never even experienced. Things like that. Once again I’m going to be called a racist for stating facts but whatever. I just want to point out that the reason why there is division among the races is because media and the Liberals are BRAINWASHING black people into thinking there is division. We never had any issues in the 80’s and 90’s. Everyone was getting along regardless of race. Nobody had problems or cared if the person was black or white. Think about that. I love this I feel like once one bad thing comes out about a brand it’s either completely ignored and completely believed to the point people won’t change their minds about a brand even once they’ve changed things.

Great topic; more style and topic talk videos please! 💕 As far as cancel culture goes, I personally don't keep up. I do my own research and continue to do what works for my hair. If I notice changes in how my hair reacts then I'll stop using the product but I won't cancel the brand. I'll either go back or continue using what I know works I also stick to a lot of the same products and when I do rarely shop for a brand I know enough about my hair to know what will or will not work based on the ingredients. Most of the sub topics are honestly subjective so I really make my own decisions and mind my business at the end of the day. But I'm not totally closed off to where I don't allow open discussion. Much love!

Of all the brands that were cancelled, the only one I cancelled myself was the Mielle Organics and I LOVE their products. They were very wrong in that situation with Linda! And DevaCurl I never got into.

If Linda had concrete proof as regards the phone call, she should go to the court of Law. I read and watched so many videos and articles as regards this issue and I would say it is highly unfair to cancel a whole company based on a review that wasn't properly done and a call allegation that has no hard evidence. I don't roll by emotion and I know that people of this age can use social media to do so many things. So many influencers just went on and on about the issue as if the lady committed murder and here we are almost three years later with the cancel mantra.

I loved this chat and style video. In my opinion influencers like yourself are the key to stopping cancel culture. I’m guilty of it, and I know many other people are as well, but once I lose trust in a brand I completely ignore them. I ignore the news about them, I dont do research, I’m just done. But influencers like you have my trust and I know it’s your passion to learn about these things so if you give them another chance, I’m more likely to as well.

This was such a great topic. I like it when companies listen and take out the ingredients that we don't like in our products so that we can use them. Deva Curl is the one brand I won't be using again, despite being reformulated. It's just too expensive and I don't have the $ to waste.

Thank you for addressing this issue. I haven’t heard an apology from Mielle. Personally, if something works I use it. I just think when we cancel, it should be done the same way for everything in the natural hair community such as the stores we shop at and buy from that watch us and treat us like criminals and thieves. I think you should review whatever products you want. I have only really canceled two companies based on customer service. One I would use again, but the other one is a subscription service who keeps sending the same thing or non related hair items. I love your opinions, advice, and thoughts regarding this issue. Then, the creator of Mielle went on insta and basically tried to act like she was being the bigger person and ‘forgiving’ the youtuber?? Even though everyone is entitled to their opinion. It’s nothing about ingredients. It’s about the creator and her husband being crazy

I was in the process of transitioning when I did a Black Friday haul from Mielle. I didn’t find out about the issue until like December. I feel like I was let down by then as I had just started my natural hair journey. I did use their products but it took 6 weeks for them to come in after Black Friday. I have been turned off ever since. I never plan to use Devacurl and eco styler gel is need sometimes. I don’t need my brand to be black owned to use their products but they need to show all hair types and all shades. Sometimes I do see non POC shopping on my aisle and in my head “ that’s mine!” But then I just laugh at myself for taking it too far. A good product is a good product for all.

T J, I am one of those white women who shop the ethnic aisle. For years I have been saying to hairstylists that with every one of my floofy,, frizzy hairs curling in it’s own individual direction, I wish I could get them to at least agree on a direction. Maybe I could have curly hair if they did. They would just laugh and have no advice for me. So, I started experimenting with the “ethnic” products. It wasn’t until I somehow discovered the curly girl method online, though, that I learned how to coax my hair into waves and loose corkscrews. At 61 years old, I started getting curls. Boy, do I feel dumb. I had been on the internet for 20 years! Why did it take me so long? I guess I am just not enough of a girly-girl type! It never occurred to me to research my hair.

@@Silverhaired59 it sounds so simple to research your own hair but it is true! I have chemically straightened my hair since 10 to “fit in” and make it more manageable but at 40 when the pandemic hit , I said forget this! I am now fully I unrelaxed natural hair with beautiful curls I didn’t know existed! Sometimes it takes longer for some of us!

For me personally the only company I have cancelled is Mielle and for me it has nothing to do with the products its how crazy the owners acted. It was just ridiculous.

I gave Mielle products a chance, but truthfully, I don't care too much for her line, but I preferred Miss Jessie's brand.

Why can't other make up influences be like you when it comes to companies being canceled 🙃 you actually listen to your audience and care about us. While also educating us all at the same time. Especially with the Diva Curl situation.

I love this type of video! And I agree that devacurl is cancelled forever just because of how poorly they handled the situation. As for Olaplex... the dose makes the poison. Given that the dose of that specific ingredient is extremely low, I'm not concerned.

Something I don't understand. Curly hair is not exclusive of black people. At least not here in Latinoamérica. So why is wrong also include others races?

Yeah I agree. There is this territorial thing in the curly hair community where it’s seen as wrong or intrusive for white people to use certain products. But like, white people have curly hair too. Curly hair is not something that only African Americans have so why the territorial thing?

I agree as I am Latina with curly hair and have struggled my entire life to find products for type 3 curls in the “white” and “black” markets. However I thing the territorial thing stems from basically everything being stolen from African American culture. And I mean everything. So I can see why some brands can be viewed as “sell outs” or African Americans holding brands/products close to their heart and not wanting them to be whitewashed. I get it.

@@pjscurls3037 But nothing is being taken from African Americans by a brand adding eg more lightweight lines. They still have their eg heavy lines so what is the problem actually? Also not everyone in the African American community can even use those heavy lines. If you have fine low porosity hair or low density hair the lightweight lines might actually suit you better.

Loved Diva products back in the day but I too had a change in my curl pattern and my hair became extremely dry… almost looked damaged. There are so many curl hair products out there now it’s so much fun. But my absolutely fav is Dippity do!!!

I don't care what brands are "cancelled" I use what works on my hair and that's it! It takes age's to find the right products so once I have what i need i use it until doesn't work anymore. I have been using Cantu products on my hair for well over a year and I'm loving them, before that I used Crème Of Nature briefly and for over a decade i used Head And Shoulders!

Bianca I completely agree! If someone or some company repents from their hurtful ways, we should forgive and move forward. Moving forward does not always mean letting them back into our trusted circle. Letting them in depends on the amount of hurt and the attitude with which they repented i.e. diva. THANKS for letting us know some of these canceled products had been updated by the companies! I am looking forward to checking out some of my old faves i.e. cantu! 🥰

We should be allowed to provide constructive criticism and if they listen to us (i.e. change the products and correct the problem) why should we continue bringing up the past? We need to be a little bit more tolerant and cooperative. I love many of the curly brands you mentioned and I am happy they corrected the issue so that I may continue to use them. Thank you!

I just started using the Not Your Mother's mousse when I saw it on the shelf while getting something else and it is by far my favorite product so far. I also tried the shampoo/conditioner mentioned.

Okay you comin with some conversation today! I agree that there is a big difference between listening to your consumers and changing ingredients and the brand owner being the issue. I appreciate brands that change formulas to better serve the community like Pattern etc... Word of mouth paired with visual results is very powerful and for SOME owners to disregard the YT influencer makes a difference to me on if I am going to support them or not. IDK about Mielle. To me, that entire situation is convoluted from the review to the phone call, very tricky. I didn't find Shea Moisture to be a big deal either. I don't buy into the cancel thing, either I support you or I don't with a few grey area exceptions😂 This purple is beautiful!!! I want to see the mermaid outfit 😜

Cantu Root Rinse saved my life when I had shingles on my scalp. Everything else hurt or itched. They have so many products that if a few don’t work, IMO, you shouldn’t cancel. However, as a Devacurl damagee, I’ll never try their new stuff. I lost hair and it changed my curls. I won’t forgive because of their lack of accountability. Don’t blame your customers. My hairdresser actually uses the new stuff on me even though she knows I no longer use it and I’m almost ready to stop going to her because of that. Love the purple!

Thank for your support through the DevaCurl debacle. It went toxic, beyond bad ingredients. Many of us in the FB support group think something from the packaging leached into the products. Besides hair loss, loss of curl pattern, dryness, breakage, & ugly patchy things sprouted all over my scalp, my fingernails began deteriorating, I began having chronic eye infections, & my hair color was altered (I didn’t color or bleach it). I began exclusively using the brand when it was Lorraine’s original formulations & had no issues until towards the end of 2018. The only error I made was to continue using it even though the scent was funky. It’s nearly 3 years since I discontinued DevaCurl, & my hair is finally looking like it was pre-damage. If the damn company issued a total recall in 2019, less people would be suffering now. It’s disgraceful how the company gaslighted those of us who sustained damage, & took no responsibility! I wouldn’t ever use this brand again, even if they offered me a lifetime of free products!

when it comes to ingredients, I will give a brand a second chance but that is only if they apologize and take accountability and change their ways. Now, DevaCurl Like you said Bianca "RIP." When it comes to Mielle Organics, I think it was very unprofessional and inappropriate how they just contacted that young woman on giving her opinion. We know how to use and do our hair and know how products should work, now I mean the basics, so they need to take the proper steps and learn how to take feedback the good and the bad (reviews). The big thing with many curly haired people is most of the products marketed to us are super moisturizing and then are paired with cleaners that are super gentle. That leads to build up! Which can lead to hair loss and scalp issues. Most moisturizing ingredients have potential to build up. So that’s a big thing I think we all have to be aware of when using lots of curly products!

I love Patterns stylers too, my hair loves just loves the styling cream and the hair gel and it doesn’t flake!

If I decide to cancel something, is based solely off of my own personal opinion and morals and what the company has done. I agree with you Bianca;, that if a brand actually listens to a complaint about ingredients for instance, and they change them I would be OK using again. But when it comes to any type of disrespect, invasion of privacy, that sort of thing, and it was truly rectified or justified etc. then I would really decide if I want to continue to support the product and company. But in truth, I’m going to use what works best for my hair point blank period.

Thanks for sharing about the different hair product lines that were cancelled as I was unaware. I did cancel Devacurl and will not be going back for the same reasons you mentioned.

The issue is these bad ingredients shouldn’t even be in these brands products in the 1st place. Not to mention “influencers” get paid to praise alot of these brands anyways so they’re getting their checks they don’t care regardless…

I feel you should make that choice for yourself. We watch you for your honesty and your help guiding us on how to use hair care products. I use Mielle rosmary line and their products have helped my hair so much from all the past heat damage. My curls I can now say, are stunning. But remember that's how I feel.

I love this video. I've had many issues with various products, most of which are to do with ingredients, but I don't go out and cancel brands because of it. I've had allergic reactions to pretty much every mousse I've tried, most likely because of the ingredients used to get the mousse out of the bottle, but that ain't the brand's fault so I haven't complained. My hair is also very sensitive to glycerin, so I haven't complained to brands because their product isn't glycerin-free. The only complaint I've ever made to a hair brand is to Innersense, and it's because they only have one hold styler (as in, a styler meant to create hold) that's considered vegan and it'd be nice to see more. Also, your hair looks *gorgeous* in purple!

I stopped using DevaCurl because it also affected MY hair. The fall out in the wash day immediately after I stopped using DevaCurl, new products on lock, was significantly different than it used to be with DC. The health of my curls is BEYOND better now and I found new products to love. I had only been using their products for a little less than a year, so it was a bit easier to get my hair to it’s healthier state, but I know some people have been using it for a long time and still have issues now. I also didn’t like their response to all of the backlash. I couldn’t go back to them. Not at those prices, when I can get better results from drugstore, affordable products (NYM’s all the way!). I had no idea there were issues with other brands though. Woof.

Re: what you said about Mielle - the reason I’d never own a Dyson hairdryer (or vacuum cleaner!) is because I do not want to give my money to Sir James Dyson 😂 so it is def sometimes a personal preference as to where you want to spend your money, knowing what you know about the company/founders!

DevaCurl will definitely remain a NO for me. I actually did feel that my curl pattern had changed and felt guilty when I seen my sister had a bald spot (I will never know for sure) and she was using DC because of me. I cancelled a clothing brand (T H) after it was rumored that he didn’t make his clothes for minority and that was waaaay back, but that’s what I think about when I see that brand so I don’t buy it. I think the one you covered might get a pass and yes, if we get new ingredients, we should give them another chance. I would at least. Nice topic and loved the purple!

I gave Deva Curl a try years ago and it just made my scalp soooo itchy. Later I found out it had formaldehydes and because I had been years using 100% natural products, my scalp flinched immediately. I stopped using and have never gone back because for the price of Deva Curl, it was just not worth it. I didn't even know customers had lost hair!! 😱 About Cantu, I'm on the same page as you, NO silicones, so I have used it very seldom like when curly friends share and I don't have my products at hand. Now that they changed their recipe, I might give it a real try. I usually fluctuate between Shea Moisture, Kinky Curly, and Curlsmith, they work for me and I don't see the need to expose my hair to products that I'm not sure about their ingredients. I'm the kind of customer that can spend a lot of time on the aisle carefully reading the bottles. I'm that OCD when it comes to my curls.

I love the purple! It's so cool! I would cancel a product/brand for subpar products but the Shea Moisture situation bothers me a bit just because it seems like it was used as yet another excuse to divide us by race. Can't we use curly hair to bring us together instead of being angry that too many people of the "wrong" skin tone were in an ad? Black women have been treated terribly over their hair. White women have spent generations being told that to look ladylike and professional we have to sleek, straight hair. IF we have curls they basically have to be fake curls. So now we have generations of women who have spent so much time and money trying to be something we're not and we end up with little girls hating their looks, even if they're absolutely gorgeous! So let's work together and get rid of those impossible beauty standards. They're impossible for the vast majority of us, matter our skin color.

Bravo - well said! Very few 'white' women have absolutely straight hair and the trend is swinging towards 'embrace your natural hair'. We have curly hair too. Be glad we are embracing the CGM because that pours more money into companies that make these products and that in turn helps with the growing number of new companies and new products coming into the market. Time to do away with 'white' products and 'black' products. How about products for 'people' with curly hair? Sounds good to me!

I wore my natural 3b/c to work yesterday and kept being asked if it was natural. One person asked me if I was wearing a curly wig 😳 Because I can’t possibly be growing out my own curls 🙄 Years ago when I wore my curly hair proud and everyday, never straightened, never used chemicals; I walked into a mall where a young lady was promoting hair straighteners. I wanted nothing to do with it and she kept asking “Don’t you want straight hair?” Curly hair life! Never boring 🎉😂

Even Maui line was extremely bad . I had severe hairfall and this happened for me when i was in Lafayette, SFO . And wen i travelled back to India as well . It was worser for my hair . And ultimately had to dump the entire collection ( including the masks, shampoo, conditioners, butter, milk) i had got from US. Felt so bad .. Btw this has nothing to do with the content of cancelling bcoz the ingredients are bad . But just my opinion of how it responded to my hair And the saviour that happened for me are these two - rizos curls defining cream and kinky curly custard .
