Canary Islands volcano forces further evacuations of La Palma residents - BBC News

An erupting volcano on La Palma in the Spanish Canary Islands has forced authorities to evacuate hundreds of homes, as the lava gushes towards the sea.
Local officials have warned the lava could trigger chemical reactions when it reaches the sea, causing explosions and the release of toxic gases.
The BBC's Dan Johnson reports on the latest stage of the evacuations from the ground in La Palma.

I feel so bad for that woman in the back of the truck crying her eyes out, I would be the same, seeing your home that you love, bought or build melt by lava must be so distressing, I really hope the President keeps his promise and help rebuild homes.

You can't "rebuild" a home after it is devoured by Lava. Those areas are lost forever. They will need to relocate to areas not covered in volcanic Rock.

Thank you to all the people who are concerned and who are helping La Palma. If someone doesn't know, La Palma is in Canarias, an archipelago formed by 8 islands, I'm from Gran Canaria, 3 islands away from La Palma. You don't know how much it hurts to see this, it's a pain you can only feel if you are from Canarias. We travel from island to island so easily so a lot of people from other islands have been there, myself included 3 years ago. However my pain doesn't compare to those who live in La Palma, and even more to someone affected by the volcano. Sending my best wishes to La Palma.

What many people dont seem to understand, is that their beloved homes and land was created by vulcanic activity in the first place. The island didn't just pop into place. So, eruptions will continue, and it will happen again and again, that's the whole point of these islands. You can rebuild all you want, but, at some point, its just a repeat. You can call the situation "bad", you can blame the gouvernment, but at the end of the day, your home is built on a vulcano. What do you expect?

That lady in the back of the truck at the end, I felt that, as someone who also had to go through several evacuations due to wildfires. It's hard to empathize and encompass exactly the feeling of suddenly being chased away from your home in a matter of minutes / hours on a grand scale like this, without having experienced it first hand. It's one thing to be caught in a turbulent war, always worrying for the day you have to flee, it's another to get suddenly woken up by an environmental disaster you weren't expecting, that chases you as you flee.

For all the people who say that those of La Palma are stupid for building near a volcano, I am from Gran Canaria another island in the same archipelago. The Canary Islands are of volcanic origin, and that means that these islands came out of a volcano that came out of the sea in an eruption, in conclusion if you see maps of, for example, La Palma you will see that the entire island is a volcano. Okay, so The Canary Islands should be uninhabited, right? Not because basically the people of the Canary Islands have been in these islands for hundreds of years and it is not so easy to leave your home, your culture and everything you have because under that logic lots of places in the world should be abandoned.

Yes people have been building too close to dormant volcanoes. Leilani Estates in Hawaii was built right on top of the East Rift Zone of Kilauea which erupted by surprise in 2018.

Nobody is prepared to face it even if they know that their house is near a volcano.... It's like, people who live in california, they know that one day their houses may collapse due to a massive earthquake ...

All seeing is a perspective seeing, they should be thankful for having no disability, like I do. My everyday tasks are a little challenge, they can improve their misery, I can't, they should stop whining.
