Canadians using 3D printing to remove accessibility barriers at low cost

Makers Making Change, an international organization with chapters all over Canada, is making 3D printed devices to help people remove barriers in their daily lives. Joanne Roberts has the story.

    Disability equipment can be so expensive and so many people with disabilities are living on a very limited budget so it's brilliant to see people coming up with solutions to help like this. I'm very used to bodging my own ways around things but new technology like 3d printers open up a whole new world of ways to do that and seeing people who have this technology being willing to help those who don't is awesome. I love seeing the good and selfless side of our society still thriving

    This so much. Now it doesn't even need to be botched anymore. We can literally make finished product quality parts in our bedrooms (if you get over the fact that layer lines are a feature not a bug).

    if you want to 3d print something but don't know how or don't have a 3d printer, check to see if there's a makerspace or hackerspace near you. They usually have experienced volunteers happy to teach you about 3d printing and to help you get your device printed. If you specifically want a disability aid, it's entirely possible that they'll have it printed for you at no cost to yourself. Disability aids _should_ be free for all who need them, but when that's not an option make sure to look to your local community. And remember: "disabled" isn't an insult, it's a descriptor of your needs to operate in society. When you advocate for your own disability accommodations, you not only improve your own quality of life but you make it easier for every other disabled person who needs accommodations to get them.

    Clearly you lack basic understanding and compassion for those who might have some limitations so..... There are cars adapted for those missing one or more limbs or in a wheelchair. Should all those people just stay home or give up their independence? Just because something is painful doesn't mean you can't do it. If we can make life a little easier for them, shouldn't we? I guarantee you they are all safer drivers than the tik tok generation with their heads stuck to their phones while driving

  • @vincentgrosshans1218

    @vincentgrosshans1218

    Ай бұрын

    That does not automatically make you unfit to operate a motor vehicle. Think about hand controls, which are fairly common for people in a wheelchair. Just because they cannot operate the pedals with their feet does not mean that they are unfit to operate a motor vehicle. They just need adaptations so that they can use it properly. A quadriplegic may not have normal movement of their hands, but with adaptations, they are then able to use something like a seatbelt. Their range of movement of their hands does not impact something like their reaction time. I’m not sure how it is where you live, but where I live, there are many procedures and tests in place to ensure that someone is indeed fit to operate a motor vehicle. People with disabilities have A LOT of hoops to go through to be able to drive. And because of that, they often actually drive much safer than most people because they know that it’s a privilege that cannot be taken for granted.

    The only problem with personal manufacturing tools is that there will be a wider variety of products being developed and hence more confusion as to what does what and which is a better solution. Of course, these challenges are inevitable as we approach a post-scarcity civilization and our population grows. Even communications in our scientific community is now greatly bifurcated, we used to have three global peer review journals just thirty years ago but now we have over 350. We simply won't be able to communicate everything and build on previous works and promote and spread good ideas and products quite soon.

With everyone being able to create whatever they imagine, there would be too many products to know of and compare. Sure, there will still be some word of mouth, some viral concepts and trends but there simply isn't any assurance of compete communication and there will even be people separately and independently conceiving the same idea. We will have a world where we continuously reinvent the wheel. You already see this in the now 350 peer review scientific journals.

If the dude said that was his first invention, do you think he would make a whole 3d printing website based on a lie, without getting caught? Seems more likely to me the editor just made a dumb editing mistake and sacrificed us getting to see the actual click for the sake of intro pacing. Or maybe someone spoke during the shot, and didnt film a second take, such that the editors hands were tied. Imperfect and unsatisfactory, but not dishonest.

And 5 decades of severe fibromyalgia. Some days I'm not too bad. Other days I have the strength of an overcooked spaghetti noodle. Just because they don’t have normal movement of their hands does not mean that they cannot operate a vehicle safely. Many people with disabilities are perfectly capable of driving, but they need adaptations to be able to use a vehicle since vehicles were designed for people without disabilities. For example, one common device is the hand control for wheelchair users. Wheelchair users can use hand controls to operate the pedals. It’s not that they can’t drive because they don’t have normal movement of their legs, it’s just that they require an adaptation in order to use a device that was designed for people who have normal movement of their legs.

    If seatbelt releases need special tools to operate they are not a safety device but a safety hazard. If that were not the case we would laugh in every tv and movie drama when someone tries and fails to release themselves from the vehicles under water or in imminent danger of catching fire. This device is not a solution. It is mitigation.

    Dude, the inability to get out of the car isn't because of the seatbelt. It's opening the car door or breaking the window before it's too late to reach the surface without drowning. If you have rapid flood water beating against your car, you will likely die even if you get out. If you can't push a button to get a seatbelt off, then you aren't surviving any of those scenarios regardless of the seatbelt.
