The Ukrainian song is one of those songs where when you hear it for the first time you just kind of sit there, like... "what am I hearing right now?" but you can't help but think it's just a little bit lit. She went for the very classical old vintage french song vibes, be it Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Gilbert Becaud, Charles Aznavour or Barbara. Jacques Brel from Belgium is still considered to be part of "la chanson française", it's a whole identity and I've seen no one claiming that she made some kind of "cultural appropriation", it would absolutely not make sense.

Go_A kinda needs an explantion the lead singer grew up really loving folklore, and her grandmother taught her to sing with the White Voice, a traditional form of Slavic singing she met one of the other founding members at like university, he was kinda into electronic music and the like, and they were both like "you know what really works together? electronic music and Ukrania folklore" and they were right the song they performed is based on a ritual that was meant to bring in the start of spring, they used it symbolically here, to bring in an end of the pandemic, the dancing and singing is all part of the ancient rituals

I don’t think you mentioned that all the singing is done live. This year they were allowed to have pre-recorded backing vocalists and choirs for the first time (safety precautions), but the main singing is still live. So there’s always a risk that you take a wrong note or sing out of tune - but it makes performances even more impressive when they totally nail it. It adds another dimension to the competition if you know that, at least I think so.

I disagree that it was a love song. At least not to another person. I heard Gjon talking about the song in interviews and he said it was about trusting yourself in difficult times. When he sings “our hearts” I think he is talking to his inner self. Even in the music video, he helps “himself” out of the car crash.
