I feel for the Venezuelans. They played so well in this tournament. Their country was witnessing history and they had a great opportunity to advance to the semifinals. Canada has broken a lot of South American hearts this tournament. A lot of naysayers out there who continue to say Canada will be crushed by their opponents…and they couldn’t be more wrong. The experience Canada is getting from this tournament is immense. More time together, more games together and every step forward is making them stronger. Sure, they’re large underdogs against Argentina, but Canada has nothing to lose. They’re young, they’re athletic, they’re fast, they’re difficult to play and they’re learning Marschs systems every day. What a moment for Canada!

Agreed that hoping for Canada to upset Argentina is a bridge too far. HOWEVER, they will still get to play Uruguay, Colombia or Brazil for 3rd place. So those two matches are going give Canada enormous experience heading into the two NLs and Gold Cup they still have between now and the next World Cup. I'm wondering if there are any other big tournaments they could get an invitation to? Is anyone aware of an such opportunity?

Jesse Marsch has been coach for the Canadian national team for only two months , takes them to the semi finals. While Gregg the GOAT Berhalter has been coach for the US team for almost 6 years gets grouped . This is the same coach who got beat by Trinidad away in the gold cup . Failed to draw against Panama. A teams success is 50% coaching , 30% the players and 20% ( the organization/ front office / club board with or owner or with its CEO or club president) . Canada's win is huge indictment on Gregg and the US soccer federation for sheer incompetence . Come 2026, if both the US and Canada are placed in favorable groups and have good paths to the wc finals . Canada Under Jesse May actually do much better than the USMNT under Gregg .

David, Larin, Davies and Eustaquio - arguably their best 4 players - are still not firing. Just wait until they do! I have been saying since Qatar that Canada has a QF ceiling in 2026. I predict they make the R16 and maybe even a QF, depending on the opposition they come across. I don't think the USA or Mexico have a higher ceiling, so that makes Canada one of the top CONCACAF squads.

Great comments. You were more generous to Canada than other analysts. Canada had so many chances and did not finish and they are occasionally mistake prone on defence. But they really did put their full effort into the game, as did Venezuela, but Canada was more fortunate with the penalty kicks. If Canada could just finish on some of their obvious chances the game would have been less entertaining. Congrats to Canada. They are proving their worth and their heart.

The David chance, the Larin Chance, Lareya and David on a 2v1 break and we didn't even get a shot off. There was a lot of missed opportunities for sure. But our squad is what it is. Raw, young talent not necessarily playing at elite levels. It's really hard to have composure when you're getting closed down as fast and as hard as Venezuela was so im not as critical of our boys as some people are. Im impressed with how we stayed composed when the ref was obviously screwing us. The break we had when the keeper put the ball out of bounds and then proceeded to grab the ball and delay the game when we could have thrown it into play and had a chance at an open net was effing insane to me. This is what I can't stand about concacaf and comnembol. There is absolute corruption, bias what ever you want to call it or its complete incompetence. Either way I was glad to see us beat Venezuela and the damn refs. Marsch has been a revelation. I love how organized he has the boys playing and has Davies playing in his proper position. Shaffleberg and Kone need to start vs Arg. Thx for the video!

As a Canadian, I was surprised at how aggressively Venezuela pressed. It really unsettled Canada and led to a lot of turnovers, but Canada handled it well overall and was able to break the press often enough to generate some huge chances. Should have been up 2-0 or 3-0 at halftime. By the end both teams were exhausted and penalties was a fair result.

Still despite questionable refereeing (what a surprise) & miscommunication on the Venezuela goal, they stuck with it & advanced. Going up against Argentina will be tough, but as we saw with the Ecuador game, if Argentina plays like that Canada has a good chance to do the unthinkable.....if they find their finish.

I love my country, but I was sold on the idea seeing Canada as a power house in our continent. Love your game analysis, your speaking skills kept it interesting for me, keep it up.

Before the Ecuador game, I would agree this would be a very difficult game for Canada. But in all honesty, Ecuador never really attacked/tested Argentinas defense but in the 1 or 2 moments enner has he outpaced the defense I cant imagine argentina adjusting quickly enough and a lot of cards will be thrown if this pace/tempo can be maintained

As a Canadian Im proud of our team, and I do know its gonna very difficult to beat Argentina to me they still are the best most complete team in the world. But greece won a euro so anything is possible especially if Canada starts finishing those chances

Hard to give credit to Venezuela and their fans bro. Ref was awful and biased, fans with laser pointers in the Canadian's eyes during PKs... Un-classy fans. No claps from me for them.

It's weird, this win are like the 4th most important sports news of the day in Canada. They ,talk ice hockey , baseball and after they talk of the win in soccer. Soccer are not really popular in Canada. But with the mass immigration in Canada more and more people like soccer because of this reason.

Ok Canada, you proved you have improved and have a decent squad, now let the tango boys teach you some intense football for your future growth. Also, dont get ahead of yoursleves and think you are reaching the final already......you are playing team number one in the world under which France ltaly, Brazil, and Netherlands became victims. Humility is key and stop being cocky. Aregentina is the world champions whose coach, main striker and goalie won FIFA top awards. Oh, and for the records, you only gained 4 points in the group stage comparing to Argentina's 9 out of 9 points. If there was another tough team in the group like Uruguay or Colombia, you would be sacked.

Canada has already hit the point of deserving accolades. It doesn’t even matter if Argentina blow them out. Quarterfinal appearance in their first visit, overcame less than stellar reffing, overcame a defensive lapse that resulted in a goal against, overcame Buchanan’s injury, all they need to do in this next game is compete. Anything they do from here is icing on the cake; if anything, Argentina can’t afford to screw up, because if Canada beats them nobody will ever let them live it down.

Rondon - clearly pushed the defensive player to create space - great touch to put it over the keeper - could have been the ultimate heart breaker - goalie really asleep Ven had zero clean scoring chances during this game Go Canucks go
