  • @UngodlyFreak

    @UngodlyFreak

    2 жыл бұрын

    Way smaller. St. Martin is 87 km^2, while Hans Island is only 1.3 km^2. However, St. Martin is only the smallest divided *inhabited* landmass, but there are probably smaller divided landmasses which are uninhabited. I'm not sure if Hans Island is the smallest of them all. Update: No, it's not. According to Wikipedia, the smallest divided islands are Märket, divided between Finland and Sweden, and Koiluoto, divided between Finland and Russia. Both have an area of only 0.03 square kilometers.

    Well you wanted it, Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada Nunavut Atlas / Inuit Nunavut, which means “Our Land” in Inuktut, is the newest, largest and northernmost territory of Canada. It was officially created on April 1, 1999, though the proposed boundaries had been drawn in 1992 after a plebiscite was held to confirm the division between Northwest Territories and Nunavut. In October 1992, the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement was put to a plebiscite and saw a resounding majority of voters pass the agreement with a nearly 85 per cent majority. In May 1993, the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement was signed in Iqaluit, and on June 10, 1993, the NLCA and the Nunavut Act (an act that created the new territory) were passed. Nunavut covers 1,936,113 square kilometres of land and 157,077 square kilometres of water in Northern Canada, representing 21 per cent of the country’s total area. Nunavut covers 1,936,113 square kilometres of land and 157,077 square kilometres of water in Northern Canada, representing 21 per cent of the country’s total area. The territory includes mainland Canada, the majority of the Arctic Archipelago, and all of the islands in Hudson Bay, James Bay (including Akimiski Island and Charlton Island) and Ungava Bay. Nunavut also includes Ellesmere Island as well as the eastern and southern portions of Victoria Island in the west. Renamed in 1987 from Frobisher Bay, the capital of Nunavut is Iqaluit. All areas of Nunavut are accessible only by plane or boat. Nunavut is a territory that consists of three regions: the Qikiqtaaluk (Baffin) Region, the Kivalliq Region and the Kitikmeot Region. These regions are marked by stark differences in geology and more subtle differences in culture. The environment and wildlife in the regions have led to differences in diet and hunting techniques as well as dialects of Inuktut. Qikiqtaaluk Region The Qikiqtaaluk Region is the easternmost administrative region of Nunavut. Qikiqtaaluk is the traditional Inuktitut name for Baffin Island. There are 13 communities in the Qikiqtaaluk Region: Iqaluit, Arctic Bay (Ikpiarjuk), Cape Dorset (Kinngait), Clyde River (Kangiqtugaapik), Grise Fiord (Ausuittuq), Hall Beach (Sanirajak), Igloolik (Iglulik), Kimmirut, Pangnirtung, Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik), Qikiqtarjuaq, Resolute (Qausuittuq) and Sanikiluaq. Nunavut's beautiful mountains and skies cover 21 per cent of Canada's total area Kivalliq Region The Kivalliq Region consists of the portion of the mainland to the west of Hudson Bay together with Southampton Island and Coats Island. There are seven communities in the Kivalliq Region: Arviat, Baker Lake (Qamani’tuaq), Chesterfield Inlet (Igluligaarjuk), Coral Harbour (Salliq), Naujaat, Rankin Inlet (Kangiqtiniq) and Whale Cove (Tikirarjuaq). It is here that you will find the great expanse of the Arctic tundra - rolling hills that stretch from horizon to horizon. This is also home to some of Nunavut’s largest lakes and rivers. Kitikmeot Region The Kitikmeot Region is the most western region of the territory and consists of the southern and eastern parts of Victoria Island with the adjacent part of the mainland. There are five communities in the Kitikmeot Region: Cambridge Bay (Ikaluktuuttiak), Gjoa Haven (Uqsuqtuuq), Kugaaruk, Kugluktuk and Taloyoak. (Totally not copy and pasted)

    I would like to give you both an English and French paragraph on how Canada treated them wrong. (P.S. this is from a nova scotian) English - Before the arrival of Europeans, First Nations in what is now Canada were able to satisfy all of their material and spiritual needs through the resources of the natural world around them. For the purposes of studying traditional First Nations cultures, historians have therefore tended to group First Nations in Canada according to the six main geographic areas of the country as it exists today. Within each of these six areas, First Nations had very similar cultures, largely shaped by a common environment. All First Nations across the country hunted and gathered plants for both food and medicinal purposes. The actual percentage of meat, fish and plants in any First Nation's diet depended on what was available in the local environment. Although most ate plants. The men cleared the land for planting, chopping down trees and cutting the brush, while the women planted, tended and harvested the crops. After about 10 years, when the land became exhausted, the people would relocate and clear new fertile fields. Now, for what Canada did. After the War of 1812, British administrators began to regard First Nations as dependents, rather than allies. By 1830s, with more and more lands surrendered for settlement, only pockets of First Nations lands remained in Upper Canada. For the most part, land surrender treaties did not create sizeable reserves for First Nations signatories. The Robinson-Huron and Robinson-Superior treaties of the 1850s would become the template for future agreements with First Nations in the West. These treaties ceded First Nations lands and rights to the Crown in exchange for reserves, annuities and right to hunt and fish on unoccupied Crown lands. Canada shipped many off to schools far away from family and taught them how to be "english". They beat them and forced them to speak in English only. Français - Avant l'arrivée des Européens, les Premières nations de ce qui est aujourd'hui le Canada étaient en mesure de satisfaire tous leurs besoins matériels et spirituels grâce aux ressources du monde naturel qui les entourait. Aux fins de l'étude des cultures traditionnelles des Premières nations, les historiens ont donc eu tendance à regrouper les Premières nations du Canada selon les six principales régions géographiques du pays tel qu'il existe aujourd'hui. Dans chacune de ces six régions, les Premières nations avaient des cultures très similaires, largement façonnées par un environnement commun. Toutes les Premières nations du pays chassaient et cueillaient des plantes à des fins alimentaires et médicinales. Le pourcentage réel de viande, de poisson et de plantes dans le régime alimentaire d'une Première Nation dépendait de ce qui était disponible dans l'environnement local. Cependant, la plupart mangeaient des plantes. Les hommes défrichaient la terre pour la planter, en abattant les arbres et en coupant les broussailles, tandis que les femmes plantaient, s'occupaient et récoltaient les cultures. Après environ 10 ans, lorsque la terre était épuisée, les gens se déplaçaient et défrichaient de nouveaux champs fertiles. Passons maintenant à ce que le Canada a fait. Après la guerre de 1812, les administrateurs britanniques ont commencé à considérer les Premières nations comme des personnes à charge, plutôt que comme des alliés. Dans les années 1830, avec de plus en plus de terres cédées pour la colonisation, il ne restait plus que des poches de terres des Premières Nations dans le Haut-Canada. Dans la plupart des cas, les traités de cession de terres n'ont pas créé de réserves importantes pour les Premières nations signataires. Les traités Robinson-Huron et Robinson-Superior des années 1850 allaient devenir le modèle des futurs accords avec les Premières nations de l'Ouest. Ces traités cédaient les terres et les droits des Premières nations à la Couronne en échange de réserves, de rentes et du droit de chasser et de pêcher sur les terres publiques inoccupées. Le Canada a expédié beaucoup d'entre eux dans des écoles éloignées de leur famille et leur a appris à devenir "anglais". Ils les battaient et les obligeaient à ne parler qu'en anglais. Hope you have a lovely night! J'espère que vous passerez une bonne soirée!

    When you say it like that it sounds bad. If you say before 1812 "Canada" was trying to solidify "First Nation" territory in the USA as a permanent "state". It kind of makes a difference. "Canada" was also at war... ALOT. So just keep that in mind. Every "Nation" both indigenous and non-Indigenous were constantly hedging their bets. "Canada" also had Home children from 1869-1948 from Britain which resulted in over 100,000 unaccompanied English children which often ended up in similar if not worse situations. Usually ending up on farms as child laborers. We did not treat peoples right regardless of ethnicity. It was also 1871 when it started to became law in the "dominion" for education. To say "Canada" maliciously did these things would be incorrect. To say we messed up would be closer to the truth. It was really "Code talkers" that caused "Canada" to stop trying to actively trying to teach these things in 1914. These people became coveted and a secret weapon in times of conflict. They Never got the recognition they deserved because of this same secrecy. How do you crack a code with no written language? Or even trying to read Bead or Wampum if you don't know how. Our "Treaties" and history together is often not taught properly. Even historically Britain was responsible for destroying villages in the Tlingit Nation but now they are part of "Canada" so all those with French heritage are also responsible...Even Nova Scotia repelled those that named it. The Huron-Wendat got dispersed by the Haudenosaunee in the 1650's. Do these count as traditional lands of the peoples? Which peoples even...

    The reason the border dispute was a thing in the first place is, as far as I remember, that by having control over hans Island you would have control over a majority of the strait. This is not something that would have had any major impact so far, but in a future where the strait would be more traversable and populated, it could make a difference in control over the arctic when it comes to trade routes etc.

    This saddens me. The Whiskey war was in my opinion one of the coolest and funnest activities any 2 nation has allowed their military to partake in. It was never serious, for a rock in the Arctic. It was men being men, sharing a drink, a tradition, and a laugh. I hope chain of command does allow the continuation of this tradition, or even just build a joint joke memorial of the Whiskey Wars where Rye and Schnapps are still shared. It was just such a wholesome and silly thing and it will suck to see this war end.

    In a similar way like Canada and Denmark solved the dispute by splitting the Hans island in two countries belonging both to Canada and Denmark, South Korea and Japan can solve the dispute of Liancourt Rocks (Korea: Dokdo islands/Japan: Takeshima islands) by splitting 50/50 of liancourt rocks (The western island belongs to Korea and the eastern islands belongs to Japan).

    The United Kingdom does technically share a land border with two countries (🇮🇪, 🇪🇸) if you consider their miniscule exclaved territory of Gibraltar on the European side of the strait of Gibraltar. If you really wanted to delve into the semantics of this you could also claim that the UK also borders several other countries like France or the aforementioned Denmark (through the outlet of the Faroe Islands) through their exclusive economic zone (EEZ), an aquatic territory that extends 200 miles away from the country's coastline in which a country has somewhat limited control. And with the UK's numerous tiny, terrible islands strewn across the globe, outlandish statements like that "the UK borders the USA" become somewhat grounded in reality (in this case due to the divided Virgin Islands).

    The funny thing about islands is they effect the exclusive economic zone. If one were to get the island it would push the territorial waters a lot closer to the others border. Splitting the island makes the most sense

    Okay now they should do that with the other islands. Like the one near Maine disputed between USA and Canada or the one near Newfoundland dispute between France and Canada.
