Canada and the Vietnam War | Artifacts Interview Series

Legion Magazine sat down with Andrew Burtch, the post-1945 military historian at the Canadian War Museum, to discuss Canada’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Canada’s 240-strong military contingent in the International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) delegation was there to enforce a ceasefire, withdrawal of troops and dismantling of military bases in South Vietnam. Though rarely recognized, over 20,000 Canadians joined the United States Army to fight in Vietnam. Learn more: legionmagazine.com/en/2019/12...

An estimated 20,000 Canadians enlisted in the US military to serve and fight for the US in Vietnam. My cousin was one of them and served 2 tours in the US Army and survived and is still alive today. He’s proud of his service and has no PTSD, or any suffering at all about his US Army service. He lives in northern Ontario and is retired.

Hey thanks for sharing that! I wanted to interview a Canadian who served in Vietnam for some time now, perhaps your cousin would be open to that? Feel free to drop me a line here if you like :)

I was in the US Army from 65 - 68 however I was not in Nam. I knew three guys in Basic and AIT who were Canadian plus a SGTFC at Ft Gordon MP school who was a career soldier and who was from Ontario. He had a CIB so I assume he was in Nam. I later became aware of three Aboriginal Mik Maqs who did indeed serve in Nam. They were from Pictou Landing Band in NS.

The French comic book series Dan Cooper was about a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Vietnam was a French colony. Is it possible a Canadian was the Dan Cooper, or DB Cooper that skyjacked the Northwest Airlines flight 305 in 1971 as a way to raise war protest money? And then slipped back across the border? Or could the skyjacker have been a deserter from the US, living in Canada, and went to Portland to skyjack the plane, head up to Seattle, and jump out during takeoff from Seattle, close to the border? Having cash to spend would obviate the need for identifying himself for large purchases. The skyjacker asked to have the airstairs down during takeoff from Seattle as if he was going to bail out asap. He could have then picked up his car that he had left at the airport and driven back to Canada. However, the airlines insisted on taking off with airstairs up, thus sidetracking him into jumping much later. No one ever heard from him again.

Have any of you read the book, "Canadians in the Vietnam War", I happen to have two copies. There 30k Canadians that fought there in the US military, and I was one of them. Any questions ask me, and I will try to answer. By the way I reside in the State of Colorado. I would like to add, also I am originally from Edmonton, Alberta in case you are interested. This is all from here, and will be glad to hear from you all.
