    Can't wait on the actual mastering vid. Would you prefer a mix that has more low end or less low end for mastering?

  • @AudioAnimalsStudio

    @AudioAnimalsStudio

    Depends on the track. I'd prefer more low end as it's nicer to pull out the high end and balance the mix rather than pull out the low end. I'd prefer a good balance of lows and highs.

    Still looking for my first mix buss eq - All my HW purchases have been informed by you. I have the fusion and ssl bus + and freqtube on your recommendation, am now looking for an EQ, then possibly an analog limiter (bettermaker seems wise here…but for EQ was thinking Custom Audio Germany). THEN possibly a Vari mu. Thanks for your content this is a super helpful video!

    Here is the info taken from our FAQ answering this question. Studio A (Nick Burchall) is the Audio Animals primary mastering studio and is the studio we always recommend selecting. This studio has one of the world's best mastering chains installed, costing upwards of £150,000. A truly unique mastering chain with some highly sought after mastering equipment. Studio B (Paul Ashmore) is the Audio Animals primary mixing and mastering / Dolby Atmos studio. This state of the art studio has a 9.1.4 Dolby Atmos PMC system installed. The mastering chain installed in Studio B costs upwards of £75,000 and has been carefully selected to gain the best possible results from each unit in the chain.

    Hi Paul, its very interesting that you use the wes audio and the blackbox at the start of your mastering chain. A lot of engineers use these, especially the Blackbox to gain loudness at the end of their mastering chain. To understand your choice, you picked both units because of the possibility to shape the bass fundament of your sound, right? I often saw mastering engineer started with similiar moves like putting a gyraf G23 Tilt eq or Manultec Orca Bay EQ at the start of their chain.

  • @AudioAnimalsStudio

    @AudioAnimalsStudio

    The Wes Audio is used much like you would a g bus comp on a SSL console. I have a different approach to saturation using the blackbox. I have tried it in every position in my chain and for best results it works best at the start of the chain.

    @@AudioAnimalsStudio I got to try the Shadow Hills I got briefly. Some issues to address with the seller or UPS as the green light is out and the Iron transformer knocks out the left side in one mode and the right in the other. But it did exactly to my work what I anticipated it would. I’m not sure if SPL Iron would still be necessary for me with this and a Stamchild. What I need is a rack system because this thing is gigantic..hah. It did a really good job fixing issues I had where vocals I recorded with an Sm7 were too lispy when combined with music and also widened the stereo image while making it smoother. Big improvement over the plugins for sure. The Buzz Req might be the next thing I need once I get these things with the Shadow Hills cleared up.
