There is another factor involved here and that is the toxic effects of detergents (as opposed to soaps) on aquatic living things. So if you are washing your car outside and are connected to a storm drain that discharges into a nearby body of water, that dish soap can be highly toxic to fish, etc. The powerful surfactants in dawn dish soap (actually a detergent) binds tightly with the gill membranes resulting in suffocation. It's been awhile since I've checked, but generally car soaps are much milder and have a much lower toxicity. That being said, I noticed on my Chemical Guys Snowball foam that it contains Benzene. Benzene is probably the most toxic solvent (also a carcinogen) out there and should not be made a part of anything that the general public can get their hands on. You can check with your auto soap chemists and see what they have to say on the topic.

So glad you did this video. People ask me ALL the time this question, even other pro detailers. There are SO many great soaps on the market. But I would have to say Phoenix EOD Apex is my go to. In the UK the most popular variant by far is “Fairy Liquid” Loved by decades of housewives - before it became the male job to wash up too…. Yes it’s been going that long. My mum used it to clean dishes and her Fiat 127 Palio over 40 years ago. The Fiat has long since returned to its component form through the Italian Rust Bug. But “Fairy Liquid” soldiers on 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Salt and brine)Followed by any minor corrections that need to be addressed. (Random orbital buffer, Autogylm) Soap go to’s are Mr Pink, Meguiar’s wash / Wax and turtle wax Max power. This spring I am looking forward to applying a ceramic or graphene coating. Haven’t decided yet. I purchased a bottle of the T wax Hybrid solutions graphene flex wax and applied it to my black QX80, Tundra and S550 S class. which resulted in a deep shine. Very pleased, but would like to take things a step further😊 Thanks for the great and informative videos 😊

I appreciate the perspective on using dish soap as an aid in removing previous protection, that was something I had wondered about as a broke person who enjoys detailing, though obviously you still don't have the lubricity of car shampoo. On the subject of detailing on a tight budget, harbor freight released some new detailing specific tools, particularly microfibers, I'd really love to see your take on. The new general-purpose detailing microfibers for example are 350 gsm, 80 20 blend, and have two different colors so if you buy one set you can still keep them separate for different tasks. At a genuinely incredible price point. I think harbor freight has really been stepping up their game and trying to improve their reputation- I'd really love to see you review the stuff they have available as bang for the buck options for folks just getting into the hobby or people who just don't have much to spend! As for shampoo, all I've used so far is meguiars gold class as it came in the kit that got me started, but when I use it up I'm excited to try the hybrid solutions shampoos, they seem to have similarly focused on stepping up their game for value offerings, which I really love to see ☺️

In every video where you've talked products from that line, you've had the notes that they've performed quite well and are exceptional value for the money, so I went and watched the overview video. They seem like a really good fit for my needs and budget so most of what I'm picking up to add to the Meguiars kit I started with is from the hybrid solutions line and I'm looking forward to seeing how I like them :) It was cool to learn they're still family owned too Like I said, I'd love to see a review of the detailing tools harbor freight is carrying now, I think some of them seem like great budget entry points and would be excited to see a more informed perspective! Thanks for the reply and I hope you have a good one!

I used Dawn once or twice years ago to help break down old waxes, but nowadays I just use a dedicated strip wash soap. My favorite soap is Adam's, whether the standard (for wheels or for non-ceramic coated cars), or their graphene shampoo (for coated cars). I also use their Mega Foam for use in my foam cannon. I've been very happy with them, but I'd like to give a try to something else, just to branch out. I'm finding it difficult to justify at the moment though just because I've got so much of the stuff on hand!

Pan excellent informative video on the make-up of different soaps. When I see cars that the clear coat is gone my immediate guess is that either the car went through a weekly car wash or was regularly cleaned by dish detergent. You are spot on as to the use of dish detergent on a "one in a while" wash but I differ to using car shampoos that are made to clean cars and DISH detergents made to clean dishes. Cheers

@@PanTheOrganizer the product line is crazy awesome and easy to use. APP has a similar cut to Uno Pure as people tried to use it as a medium cut polish and created a gluey mess. Apply APP with your 8mm polisher using the red DIY jeweling pad. I spin the polisher at about 3 1/2. I used the Meguiars M300 and 3800 rpm’s was the sweet spot for me. I give the paint two to three passes depending on how much gloss you want. Let the APP sit for at least an hour and I have gone as long as three hours. Removal is as simple as using a microfiber towel as it will remind you of removing a strong ceramic coating. The coatings are super easy to apply as I used almost 10 mils on an AudiQ7 including glass and wheel facings. The coating seems to melt into the paint so you have to trust you applied the coating correctly. Wipe off is super simple and not overly click. About three hours later the slickness really starts to increase. The gloss is like nothing else. I have some pictures if you want to see them.

I am coating another Dodge Ram truck Sunday with C6 and I will also capture a quick video when it comes in for the one week update. I forgot to mention on APP I use one small pea drop per panel. I end up using two half size pea drops with both drops on opposite ends of the pad per panel because my head thinks it will redistribute more evenly. There is probably no benefit of using two half size pea drops but I still do it. I cannot wait for your video!

Haha yeah there are still scenarios where using dish soap is useful, for example after you are done doing polishing oils, sometimes an IPA wipe isn't enough and using a heavier degreasing agent like dish soap is good, or if you don't have a stripping soap and you need something to start stripping older waxes and sealants and you're in a pinch, dish soap can work. Just don't use it for regular weekly washes or on a car that has paint protection like a wax or sealant. ;)

The best soap for removing water spots and mineral buildup is this one: bit.ly/3x9GyKv I put 5 oz of that in 4 gal of water and I wash my car. For the pre-wash in a foam cannon, use 1:10 dilution (1 oz for every 10 oz of water). But it depends how bad the water spots are and how long they were left unattended. That soap will work miracles if you catch the water spots early enough. If that doesn't work, you have to step up to a water spot remover spray (like CarPro Spotless 2.0) and if that still doesn't work, you'll have to machine polish the paint.

Im not getting the super shine like I see on youtube but on youtube everybody does more than the recommended 2 sprays

  • @PanTheOrganizer

    @PanTheOrganizer

    Ай бұрын

Seal N Shine can get streaky if you overapply. So one or two sprays per panel is totally fine. As long as you're getting even coverage. Seal N Shine is glossy, but not the glossiest. Its main thing is chemical resistance, and gives you 4-6 months durability from a quite inexpensive product. The next step up in the Turtle Wax range if you want even more gloss and durability is their Graphene Flex Wax, which lasts 9-12 months. But regardless of what paint protection you apply, always keep in mind there's a limit to the gloss they can boost. They're usually just the icing on the cake. The best way to get the biggest increase in measurable gloss units (if you were to use a gloss meter) is ALWAYS through machine polishing. Paint correction removes oxidation, defects like swirls and scratches, increases depth and clarity, and by flattening the surface makes for better light reflection, and thus increases gloss. Then you wipe the surface with a paint prep spray to remove polishing oils, and then you apply your choice of paint protection (wax, sealant or ceramic coating). I hope this helps.

A common problem with machine polishing to remove protection is failure to remove all residue prior to applying the next protection. With nothing but a dry buff/wipe down there can still be a remaining layer of oil. This is where a quick wash with Dawn could be beneficial (post-polish) .

Some people are using IPA for final wipedown which can be good but you only need it to be 10-25%, not the full 70. Remaining issue is the difficulty to get in all the seam/crevice/gaps around headlights between doors ect... so it can still be good to just foam the whole car up and clean again to make sure as much residue as possible is removed from those areas.

Great. Thank you. Effective Protection Prep is a skill that many people lack. Just buying an over priced 16oz bottle of "prep-spray" and doing a quick wipe down is NOT going to get her done. Be sure to touch on all the ways one could unintentionally harm their polished/perfected paint by doing things like using an old or poor quality towel, or not thoroughly cleaning the vehicles crevices beforehand leaving soil that could be pulled out any step of the way damaging the paint. Imagine perfect paint to be ruined in the final wipe down step by picking up some crud in a side-view mirror and rubbing it across the paint...

Thanks for the video. Again, as many many videos across KZread, a lot of talk but never demonstrating Dawn dish soap verses other stripping chemical wash soaps. Also, no one ever talks about the runoff of all of those harsh chemicals into our watershed vs dish soap that has been repeatedly used directly on wildlife to clean up environmental hazards. If it’s good enough to clean baby ducks soaked in a oil spill, it’s good enough for your vehicle’s paint as a tougher cleaner than a pH neutral car wash soap that’s used for regular maintenance cleaning.

You perhaps did not pay attention to what the chemists had to say about dish soaps in general. If you want to continuously wash your car with them, hey you do as you wish. But don't think it's "right" just because you do it. The chemists that formulate these products know more about soaps and their chemistries than 99% of people will ever dream of knowing. So sometimes, it's best to let people who know more guide us. I like facts and science (I have a background in medicine, more specifically in molecular biology and biochemistry, so I have tremendous respect for the men and women who dedicate their lives to advancements in science). Dish soap can still be used in some rare occasions, like after paint correction to remove polishing oils, but should not be used for regular weekly washes.

@@PanTheOrganizerthanks for reply. I did not ever say use Dawn dish soap as a regular wash. Perhaps you misread my comment. I asked about using it as a higher pH cleaner. I asked about demonstrating the properties of high end pH cleaners as a tougher cleaner and sealant/wax prep vs using Dawn soap, comparing the chemicals composition of each and ease of use, price, and environmental concerns. No one wants to touch this subject. “A scientist gave an opinion” is not an answer I am looking for. Chemists (to my knowledge) have never analyzed the cleaning ability and lubricity of Dawn dish soap with scientific measurements on a hood of a Mercedes Benz as a prewash. I am concerned with the amount of chemicals being promoted, like benzene for instance, that are very harmful to us and the environment, in pursuit of profit. Again, thank you very much for reading my comments. I very much appreciate your many many videos that demonstrate your knowledge and sharing your experience with people interested in this profession and DIY.

You haven't done your research it seems William. Please research before making comments like those. A simple KZread search "Meguiar's Pan The Organizer" would have generated a lot of videos for you to watch. Case in point, the videos below: Meguiar's Hybrid Paint Coating: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oHmYptOnf9nPf6Q.htmlsi=KTCV0xZ7wjGZinlm Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Spray Wax: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nat-16yvhN2dfKw.htmlsi=AVTNaXrFcTkCUbFX Meguiar's Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner: kzread.info/dash/bejne/imaIo8lsg6y6mco.htmlsi=Phtg-VarbtjuEwqo Meguiar's Professional line of products: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dJaGtbmagpepgqQ.htmlsi=pAhT6wIzqJgSPcOq Meguiar's Ceramic Wash & Wax soap: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fISKrLRsf86redo.htmlsi=ohXdy_PWr-_Ql0MZ Meguiar's Hybird Ceramic Liquid Wax: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c2t9r9yfhLfeYps.htmlsi=HVC4Ondf3ek88v21 Meguiar's Ultimate Fast Finish sealant: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJyJvNymiNPTqaQ.htmlsi=7Ek5OSlsNez6L_gP And I could go on. So how did you come up with the conclusion that you have "yet to see any Meguiar's products" reviewed on my channel?

Pan, I need your advice. I was detailing a car for a friend. She has a 2008 Toyota Solara. It only has 32,000 miles on it. It looks brand new except for the dashboard. She said she put Armor All on it and the dashboard melted. It is really sticky and very shiny. It was hard for me to see out of the window because of the reflection off the dash. Have you ever heard of this? Any advice on how to make it less sticky and, more importantly, less shiny.

  • @PanTheOrganizer

I wouldn't recommend using Armor All on your interiors. That's a thing of the past. Overly oily and glossy looking. Use appropriate interior detailers, that can clean and lay down protection. See my battle of the best interior detailers here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIuWmcGHnNy9hag.htmlsi=Ce5-Bc3Ykgif-wpi But first, to remove that oily mess you have, start by using a pure quality interior cleaner like this: amzn.to/3ysm51a Clean the surface. You might need a few rounds of that to fully remove the gunk. Then use the interior detailer to apply protection. And maintenance from then on will be as simple as using that interior detailer for regular maintenance. Spray on a towel, wipe on, buff off. Bingo.

PAN, Something I dont think you've ever talked about is RUST REMOVAL and rust prevention. I'm talking about removing rust on the undercarriage with media blasting, or acids, or rust converter, ect.. While the vehicle is on the ground or on stands in the garage. Tons of people have salt on their roads during winter and don't necessarily want to pay a shop thousands to remove the rust! If this isn't in your wheelhouse I understand but I'm sure you have some thoughts on it. I just don't see the benefit of spraying paint over rust and forgetting about it! Thanks Pan!

I actually don't have thoughts on that, since I get a new car every three years, and currently only detail brand new cars (high end detailing packages). I don't deal with used cars or old cars that go to that point, so that's beyond my expertise.
