Can You UNLOAD a Colt Single Action Army This Quickly? (Denzel Washington in THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN)

Ойын-сауық

Do you think you could unload a Colt Single Action Army as fast as Denzel Washington in the Magnificent Seven?
Well today on SaintAndrewTV, we are going to test the likelihood of the scene.

The diameter of the 45 (Long) Colt cartridge casing is 0.480 inches. The diameter of the 44 Special cartridge casing is slightly less than 0.460 inches. Both casings are 1.225 inches long from the front of the rim (chamber face) to the tip of the unloaded case. Trimming the 44 Special casing to 1.200 inches would provide a casing at least 0.020 inches smaller than the 45 Colt. Polishing the chambers would facilitate six so modified casings dropping free without resistance. The use of any of the replicas of the SAA on which opening the loading gate allows the cylinder to spin freely would speed up the unloading process. All that's left is to get the timing (speed of the cylinder rotation) right.

Yep, you're right; it's Hollywood cool with a SA. It would be great if I could simply drop out my expended blanks brass that way, I'd feature it in our train robbery, but hot brass expands w/wo lead and NO they don't just drop out all 5-6 cases. It simply doesn't work in reality like it did in the movie.

This would absolutely work on an airsoft single action army due to the fact on the casings being ever so slightly smaller than the cylinders, they just straight fall right out, of course you have the ejector rod but you absolutely never have to use it unless if there’s an issue

The brass expands and then springs back, which is why we use brass now instead of copper. Ask Custer. If the chambers are polished and free of leading, they will drop right out as long as you use a clean burning powder. (You don't want to see scortch marks up the side; they introduce friction) Not movie magic, science fact. The obvious caveat being it would be impossible with period correct blackpowder.

I first saw in 3:10 to Yuma and wondered how they got it to do that or if this is a at all plausible method Do you think some sort of oil if you kept your chambers lubed up would they fall out or would the oil kind of combust after the shot is fired and cause it to get more sticky? I just wonder why they use this more than once in Hollywood I know it's Hollywood and it's the purpose of making things look cooler but just wondering if there's anything actually historical to this

  • @SaintAndrewTV

I would have to see if their would be anything historical of something like this ever occurring. If I had to guess, I’d say no. The brass expands when the cartridge gets fired and it can be pretty snug up in that cylinder. I would say the scene is very “Hollywood” and as cool as it is, it’s not a plausible thing. There are cylinders now that can do something like that now, but I’m not to familiar with them at all. I tried to make it as accurate as possible when recreating the scene to see if that were even possible. But with all that being said, thanks for the comment! Got the my brain thinking early in the morning!

The best way is to do the "New York reload." (Definitely not as good as Denzel Washington) Second best? The Schofield revolver, which is damn near as fun to unload as it is to fire. Though its balance is nowhere as good as the Colt 1873 SAA.

dunno how they did it for the film shot, but i doubt it was cgi/special fx. my guess would be that that particular stunt gun has been modified in 2 key ways: 1.) the inside of each chamber has been highly polished 2.) each chamber has been lined with oil/lubricant before the shot. it's a close shot, meaning the actual firing of the gun was likely a filmed as a long shot and then the cut to the close shot gives an excuse to call "cut", swap the gun, and then film the unloading shot.

If you were to load live cartridges into your revolver, they would fall out because they are heavier, and they brass has not expanded. Once you fire the cartridges, the weight of the bullet and power are gone, and the brass has expanded, usually providing enough friction to require use of the ejector rod. Firing very mild loads would result in less expansion of the case, and this would probably allow more cases to fall out. Your demonstration shows the quickest way to unload a single-action revolver.

Well, that was a well polished cylinder that had been nickel plated. Which would vastly improve the lubricity of cylinder walls. Plus, they were using far lower pressures back then. Unless you are attempting to use blackpowder and lead cowboy action loads. Also looks like he was more vertical than you. Gravity is a friend. Perhaps a well modified nickel plated cylinder and a complete vertical muzzle may help?

Maybe? Brass also swells when introduced to heat. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it is a good demonstration of how Hollywood frames the western. Cool scene, just a bit far fetched.

@@SaintAndrewTV brass swells and then contracts. It will bulge a few thousandths yes, but still it contracts back far enough to slide free of the chamber. Look at modern double action revolvers that are being properly reloaded. When shooting higher power/pressure loads. The muzzle is pointed straight up and the brass falls out. Unless the chambers are gummy. Just well polished brass and chambers. Gravity.

@@JamesJohnson-if8rz right, but in that scene, he’s in a fire fight. The brass is still hot. Modified cylinders of that time were not a thing as well. I agree that a well lubed up, nickel plated SAA would be the most ideal, but still seems very unlikely. Why have an ejector rod if the fell out that fast?

  • @JamesJohnson-if8rz

@@SaintAndrewTVfirst, you want me to believe that a gunslinger who can afford a pristine colt single action army in a very finely polished and nickel plated condition would be content with it performing as a standard issue sidearm? I am not even going to touch on this. Next. Balloon head cases and black powder of the era would all be much colder and more rapidly contract than current offerings. Just because you have a reserve of fuel in your automobile does not mean you intend to use it. What I am getting at is, consider the intended rate of fire. Typically one round every two to three seconds. By the time a person had expended all five(or six) rounds, it is not beyond reason they would fall out. The ejector rod is to knock loose stubborn cases. Nothing has changed.

  • @JamesJohnson-if8rz

    @JamesJohnson-if8rz

@@SaintAndrewTVoh. Also.. it was VERY COMMON to keep and reuse brass. It was constantly maintained by polishing the verdigris away. Which was factually an issue with multiple us cavalry battles. The brass was so thin from constant polishing it would fail. Rim would rip away from case head by extractor. Causing a downed rifle. To believe a finely polished and plated cylinder, coupled with finely polished brass cannot fall free? In modern stainless guns, again rapid fire ipsc six rounds in one second style, the brass is not uncommon to fall out of cylinder. The ejector rod is slapped to ensure all brass has been cleared. At a more moderate rate of fire and an extremely lubricious plating.... I could see this being more realistic than you present. Have you honed your cylinder and media polished your brass yet?

I'll start by saying yes that was obviously unrealistic speed, however that was also the slowest unloading I have ever seen in my life... Yes, fired cartages can get stuck, but there are a couple things you can do to get them to drop like that as you saw when he spun the chamber and a couple fell out. I can't stand when people attempt to disprove things by doing them badly and saying "Oh look it doesn't work because I couldn't do it." In perfect conditions or if you get lucky this is definitely possible albeit a little slower than Denzel.
