I started training At Gracie JJ school in NJ in 2000. I was 525 pounds. Couldn’t make it through the warm up without puking. 19 years later I am 260 pounds. It did not take long to lose the weight. I’ve had MANY injuries. I’ve had to stop & start several time. I am now a 4th degree Brown Belt pursuing my Black Belt. It is so worth it!!! My fellow big people...get in & train. Besides the weight loss I have made friends for life. Start trying & NEVER GIVE UP!!! It can change your life!!!

I started training 2 weeks ago at Gracie Gym Plano, 5 days after my 42nd birthday. For reference, I am 6'4" and 272 lbs (8 years ago I weighed 400 lbs). Two weeks into training during warm ups I did the first real push ups of my adult life. I was stunned when I realized what I had just done and that I had managed 3 of them. My body is already changing in ways I never expected. My chest is becoming defined and so are my arms. My waist is slimming down and my pants fall off unless I wear a belt. Every day I am improving physically and emotionally. I sleep better. I look forward to training every day in a way that I never looked forward to with my gym membership. It doesn't matter what shape you are in; Jiu Jitsu will meet you where you are and get you to where you need to be.

When I started BJJ I was gassed out after the warm up. Now I'm running 2 miles before work when my body isn't all sore. BJJ really does change you. I'll never forget the day a guy told me during sparring on our last round, "I don't like the looks of this, you're not breathing hard enough" lol

Can I train Gracie when fat??? I sure bloody hope so! I'm 300 pounds and hunting my purple belt. I do a lot of weights and I'm strong but the hardest workout is on the mats with a good practitioner, especially if they get top position.

I remember back then in my Karate days: Training was too damn hard. We weren't necessarily told to cut our food intake. However, I voluntarily did so because the training is just too hard for someone overweight like me back then and I would train at home or at the park so that for our next training sessions, it would be a lot easier. I would reduce my food intake so that I could easily lift myself more. But I would eat a bit more than I usually eat 2-3 hours before our training starts for more energy. Pretty effective, I guarantee.

I lost 50 pounds in 6 months from doing Jujitsu. My strong opinion is that when you are in horrible condition and fat this out of shape person should drill technique and do apt of cardio to build up to rolling. If you roll around a lot before you get in shape you will not learn as much technique.

Thanks for inviting everyone to train no matter where they are starting. I have to remember that the fitness will come as long as I stay the course. I'm 5'4" 150 lb 37 yr old female and the newest white belt at my gym. I had been sedate for many years working in an office and no physical activity and decided to start training but was worried because i have little to no strength or endurance. The only good thing about that is I have to be 100% in technique because I have nothing else to rely on. Thanks Ryan for the videos.

I have always struggled with my weight, but I fell in love with Jiujitsu when I was 17 and I got to train for a year and I really enjoyed it. Through college I did other arts, including Judo, but I just did not get the same "feeling" from them like I did with BJJ. In my mid 20s I trained for a while until I got married, and I improved a lot and I actually remembered a bit from when I was a teen. However something happened soon after.... Unfortunately life can throw us curve balls, and my wife and I lost a baby late term and I had the misfortune of watching the heart beat stop. My wife got really sick for a while and was deeply depressed, as well as myself. I just was not the same no matter what I did, and I gained over 120lbs over a couple years and I picked up smoking. We moved backed to our home state to take care of ill family, and that added to my overall depression. At this point my blood pressure was sky high and I felt like CRAP. Just before my 30th birthday last year I promised myself I would train again and get into shape, and I did just that. I`m now almost to blue belt and I have lost nearly 100lbs and my BP is perfect. 3 pants sizes later I feel awesome and most importantly it helped me out of the darkness. I am whole again and I credit Brazilian Jiujitsu for saving my life. If you are on fence about starting BJJ because of your weight or fitness, I highly recommend giving it a try because in no time you will be a better version of who you were before you started. I can assure you that a good academy will welcome you with open arms and no one will judge you for trying to improve yourself. Oss!

I kept putting off training in BJJ by saying that I would join a gym after I got in shape. The problem was that I never got in shape. I realized that I could either start training in BJJ out of shape, or wait forever to train in BJJ until I got in shape. I chose to train out of shape. One of my better decisions if you ask me.

Morbidly obese guy here, 43yo 5'10", ex smoker of 25 years with 3 years clean, weighing in at 330lbs when I started kick boxing and Jiu-Jitsu just a week ago. My best friend who is a black belt "kidnapped" me to a free class and I was hooked instantly, bought my first gi just the other day. I use to be big into sports and was a fit but bulky guy in high school, until I got a terrible knee and back injury in football that made it very difficult to excise back then, and I just simply got lazy and content. I still did a lot of hiking to lose weight, I have been on a strict diet now for a couple years and KETO helped me lose 30 lbs, but I gained it plus some when I quit smoking. I am in debt to my best friend for getting me into Jiu-Jitsu, because I wouldn't have done this on my own. I've already lost 5lbs in the last week, and I can't wait to see what I can accomplish. The burn is something I've missed for far too long and while I'm sore, it's a good sore, and I want more!

I will never understand why anyone says they'll need to get fit first before trying martial arts, if that's your approach you're unlikely ever to train martial arts and even if you do get in 'shape' before training martial arts, you'll still struggle with the workouts. You're far better off just diving in the deep end & struggling..you'll still learn technique and your cardio will improve over time anyway. No coach is going to punish you because you can't keep up with the class.

Vernon Grant you should start already. If I didn’t have bigger training partners when I first started I would not be able to learn how to attack and submit larger opponents. If you look at it that way you’re taking away from their learning. Best part of BJJ is learning to adapt and be comfortable in chaos.

I have a question for all. I have been training on and off for about a year. Im in good shape and always lifting and surfing...however. (although im not bad) I feel jiu jitzu is almost too exhausting on the body. As much as I want to progress. I keep thinking its too much cardio in these classes. I have been training many times to the point where im light headed and stop most of the time not from getting tapped, but from exhaustion. I always think this cant be good for you. I know over weight people in the classes that aren't bad and have good stamina. Im just not sure too much cardio is a good thing. Hope to get some different perspectives ...

Yes! I started at 38 years old & about 350lbs. I’ve had some time off due to work schedule conflicts but am around 300lbs only doing Jiu Jitsu. No diets or other exercise lol my biggest problem is finding gi’s that fit. There’s just no real off the shelf fat gi’s. Of course there are things I am not very good at or really physically able to do like closed guard or triangles, tree stump legs make it next to impossible on anyone bigger than a toothpick or kid. Never too old or fat. Just have to put in the effort.

I am 286 at 6’1 doing bjj. I was into bodybuilding before starting. Before I would do an hour cardio with each workout 5-6 days a week. Do pull-ups hanging 90lbs although I did pull my back before doing that. Point I was getting at is even though I was in pretty good shape for someone my size it still killed me at first. 30 seconds I was dead when I started. 3 months later I lost size in upper body but I am more flexible. I also am still really strong. It’s just a different type of workout. Don’t let your size scare you away

@@KamaJiuJitsu you have to understand that its very similar being big muscle and big fat. Both burn you out fast because regardless you're still carrying 300lbs. Add to that the workouts I did really were more a handicap than benefit. Big chest and arms make flexibly hard. I could barely touch my shoulder with my hand when I started. Try finishing a choke when you can't be that flexible. Not even going to start with leg triangles lol I still have trouble closing them because my legs are so thick. I suppose I was trying to say that weight no matter what it is makes BJJ extremely exhausting at first. The only difference if it is muscle would be that the person most likely enjoys being more active. Thats about it in regards to BJJ. On a side note I definitely look fat since doing BJJ instead. Before my shoulders, chest and neck made my belly hard to notice in size comparison. Now that those shrunk it is much more pronounced. I do not like that. Something I will work on hard after my first BJJ competition in about 2 weeks. Dont want to change diet so close and mess anything up.

@@KamaJiuJitsu I am going to limit my calorie intake to about 1500-1800 a day. Cant go too far below that or yes I will go down faster but I will be completely wiped out all the time. I actually go long boarding about an hour a day also. Thats something I really enjoy when I am waiting for winter to come for snowboarding. Add up that along with training on average 5 days a week with one of those days being open mat for hour and half. Did measurements today which made me mad. Chest went from 54 to 48in, arms still 18in somehow, waist 42 from 40in and legs are rock solid but very thick. So goal will bringing down midsection to 38. I used to have to have all my shirts tailored because my drop was 12-14in chest to waist. Same issue with pants where they were really loose on waist but quads barely fit. So its been a journey the last 3 months. Weight stayed roughly the same though.

Yeah, the weight issue, coupled with needing glasses, is probably the reason why I do not feel comfortable with doing JJ. If these things were addressed properly, I'd be more inclined to take up the MA. At the very least, I wish that I could find some prescription eye goggles of some sort, that would be of great help.

DSWynne, my eyesight isn't great, so I wear glasses all the time. To give you some reference, I can't read 1 foot tall lettering from 20 feet away. I've been training for several years and know that I do not need to see my partner clearly. Just perceiving their general form at the beginning of a round is more than enough. Once you can grab onto them, you typically don't need to see them at all. When things get tough and tricky with some partners, I'll close my eyes sometimes to simplify the understanding of my situation. Besides, at any given moment your field of view is obscured to some degree, even if you have the superior position. So the sense of touch is much more important at those times. In addition, there are plenty of very skilled grapplers that are blind. So don't let your impaired vision keep you from training.

Kama Jiu-Jitsu I appreciate the quick reply, I have discussed with my doctor and he told me I know my limits better than he does. I have been doing different forms and it honestly comes down to finding a sparring partner that doesn’t want to show off or kill me. I’m thinking if I can find a few sparring partners to roll with in BJJ that get it and understand I will tap without them having to try to submit me I’m good. The BJJ community seems to be a great group and this is what I’m hoping for. I don’t need to compete I don’t even care if I stay a white belt forever as long as I can train and learn. My question I guess would be is do you think this is something most schools would be willing to accommodate to? Thanks for your time and replies

  • @KamaJiuJitsu

    @KamaJiuJitsu

    5 жыл бұрын

That’s a tough question. Yes, you know your limitations, but your partners won’t. If in a group setting, you’ll definitely benefit from people who are willing and able to be looking out for you. The question is, will you be willing to be relegated to beginner-only classes where they don’t go hard? A better (but more costly) solution, would be to exclusively train privately with your professor, since he will know your limitations and will not hurt you. Other people will possibly dislike being paired up with you repeatedly because when they train with you, they are forced to be more careful than normal, not go too hard, and if they make a mistake, can put you in a world hurt in an instant. And no one wants to be put in that situation over and over. In the end, it’s your call. I’m just telling you the experience I have running our academy.
