    I've been wanting to needle felt for such a long time but I am vegan and had never heard of alternatives to wool. I am so glad you posted this so I could see all of these kinds of materials that I can use! Thank you so much!

    Silkworms are the caterpillar stage of the silk moth, so yes, an animal, specifically an insect. Silk is made from the cocoons of the caterpillar.

    I am vegan and brand new to needle felting. I've become slightly addicted to your videos and have just had my Heidi feathers vegan starter pack through the post. Still a little confused as to what's the best core material to use though, don't want to make a hash of it and put myself off. Thank you for your brilliant videos.

    Thanks so much, I'm glad you like my videos. Core wool is simply a cheaper wool for the inside of a project so you save some money. Sometimes it can be wool from sheep that's washed and nothing else done to it but that's not easy to work with and not vegan. Here's my video on core wool but if you have a supplier call them up and ask what they advise x kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIWey9uQncStqLw.html

    Glad you did this. My sister is allergic to all animal fibers. I have spun some these fibers, but didn’t think about trying to felt with them. You can dye some of these fibers, but you have to use specialty dyes and they are expensive.

    this is great! im not vegan at the moment, but this is super helpful. i saw something really neat on a crochet channel where somebody needle felted details on a plush toy and kinda created their own "roving" by bundling up and brushing out their yarn (i believe it was acrylic) with a cat brush (so basically a carding brush) so they had an exact color match to their crochet! i havent tried it out myself yet, bit it looked like it turned out very well (i can share the video if youd like!). do you have any thoughts/tips regarding that trick?

  • @feltsbyphilippa

    @feltsbyphilippa

    Yes, it's definitely possible, a great money saver too but it can take time, some wools get a few small bits in them as you brush it but you can pull them out, works great for small amounts xx

    Hi Philippa. I am looking for an acrylic fibre as substitution for core 'wool' so I'm glad to have come across this video of yours - a big thank you for doing the research for us. I've just been onto WoW's site and they still sell the 2 that seem to fit the bill and which you were happy to recommend. These are 1) the Undyed Acrylic Top and 2) Fine Denier White Nylon Top. I only do 3D felting so the core 'wool' has to retain its shape. WoW recommended to me their Kapok and I have also tried their Bamboo. However neither of these fibres stood the stabbing test, they just fell apart and wouldn't bind into a shape. Can you please let me know whether you have used the Acrylic Top and the Nylon Top as core base and if so whether they can turn too hard with the stabbing process? The fact that they only come in white is fine as the base. Many thanks for your help.

    Hi Lisa, I'm sorry but I'm going to struggle to answer that. I did the research as a customer asked for a custom order and wanted it vegan if possible I purchased all the 'wools' to sample it but it wasn't my favourite to work with so after the video I haven't pursued it further. Try one of the Facebook sites as there are lots of vegan felters out there and they are extremely helpful x

    @@feltsbyphilippa Hi Philippa, thank you for replying so promptly. Since yesterday I got some polyester filler to try out and it's been OK as a ball shape; not sure if it'll create an animal form! In my research Heidifeathers is doing a vegan core wool (very expensive) as are Sweet Pea Dolls (marginally less). As I've not tried either yet I can't recommend but will do so bit by bit due to the expense. I agree that the acrylic core is no where as god as wool but if there's a call for it by more and more people we will have to use it for the sake of business.
