An independent clause is a group of words that can stand alone as a complete sentence. It has a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought. Makes sense by itself. It is a complete thought.
Whereas a dependent clause cannot stand alone. Although it has a subject and a verb, it does not make sense by itself. We need to add more information.
Note to teachers: Students get often confused about the dependent clauses. Practise them more and explain why it is not a complete thought, what is missing and why and what needs to be added.
