You're options were clear, you can either turn the light on or not. There is no leaving a shoe behind. That's effectively bypassing the solution and wasn't even an option. This isn't about bread crumbs, it's about the light switch in the hall.

This answer is correct, as he said "No one other than the ten prisoners will enter the room for the duration of the game". Therefore, the guards won't know about the shoes, and this strategy works!

another solution is (it will take much longer time) divide the day in blocks of 10 days. Light can be switched on only if anybody enters the room more the once. If at the 10th day the prisoner enters the room for the first time in the last 10 days and the light is off, he can proclaim, otherwise he switch it off and start again with another row of 10 days.

Number prisoners 1-10. Divide the day number by 10 and take the remainder. The light being on on day N is used to indicate that you know prisoners 1-N have already been in the room. So, on day 1 if you are prisoner 1, turn the light on. Otherwise leave it off. If you arrive on day 2 and you see it on then you know prisoner 1 has been in the room (so if you show up on day 41, for instance, you can turn on the light because you know prisoner 1 was already there). If you are prisoner 2, leave the light on, otherwise turn it off. On day 3 if the light is on you know both prisoners 1 and 2 have been there, (so if you show up on days 31 or 52, you can turn it on). If you are prisoner 3, you can leave the light on, otherwise turn it off, etc. Whenever prisoner 10 shows up on a day that is a multiple of 10, if the light is on then he can immediately conclude that everyone else has been in the room at least once and announce it. NOTE: I now watched the solution in the video. It is a lot faster than mine (which is VERY SLOW), but both work.

Since the odds of any of the 10 of you being picked is random, your solution can be faster. Your solution can technically work in 10 days whereas the given solution needs a minimum of 19 days. On a side note, I like your solution more. It's very clever. I'm usually good with these riddles, but I could think of a way to get this one. Well done!

Don't beat yourself up, this one is pretty hard! As for speed: When you compare times that are random, you usually mean the expected time rather than the minimum possible time. The expected time with the solution in the video is 128.2 days (assuming my quick and dirty calculation is correct) My solution is expected to take 1010 days (again assuming my quick calculations are right. EDIT: They are not. The expected time is even longer than this), which you will note is almost 10 times worse.

That's similar to my solution (which would also take quite some time xD). Without the numbering, so the person on day 1, 11, 21 and so on turns the light on and everyone in the next nine days leaves it untouched unless they have already been in the room in that time span. That way, if the tenth person comes into the room, hasn't been there for the last ten days and the light is still on, he knows that everyone has been in the room. It should be faster than yours since it doesn't depend on a specific order.

Okay based on the fact that there is no time limit on how long you can be in the prison, just have each prisoner turn on the light when they are in there for the first time and decline to do so every other time. Wait until you count 10 "ON" Days.

What if the person who switches the bulb off is never brought to the hall again. And all the prisoners play this game their whole life and die some day.

there is the law of big numbers, that says, that beginning at a number at a few thousand(cant remeber exactly) every randomly made choice is each equally often picked

Took me a good 30-60 minutes of thinking at least! Nice one

i did solve parts of it, 1-4 leave it alone. because then - known those all there. 5-9, on ; so as to know there. and part i got correct. - 10th off. as a secure action - everyone in hall , could describe how it look - lit or dark. thanks , trace also - foot prints of prisoners - shoes. 10 foot steps all there. one set of guard shoes. 9 bare feet. exclude yourself. thanks for partially correct. great job, all of you. know each other shoe size, and style shoes. camping shoes. guards wear combat boots.

I have another solution. Anyone of them may turn on the light, but only once; it must be the first to see it is possible that all 10 have been in the room. This could be a prisoner who has been there (only) once in the first 10 days; the next time he is there he would turn it on. A prisoner who was not there in the first 10 days would turn it on the first time he is there. A prisoner who sees the light on, but can tell from his own history that it is impossible that all the prisoners have been there, would turn it off. When a prisoner sees the light on at 10 different times there, he can say that they have all been there.

I found a different answer, this being: Before the final day, each prisoner will come to the conclusion of only switching the light switch once. Ex: Prisoner 1 has entered the room twice, he will only switch the light switch the first time, and the second time refuse to do anything with it. The result of this is that the last person (whom must make a choice if every prisoner had been in the room or not) can judge his answer on if the light is on or off. If the light is on, it means that not every prisoner has been in the cell, however if the light is turned off, it means that every prisoner has been to the cell. Extension or answer to possible errors with this conclusion: One may say: what is there are only two people who get put into the room, meaning the order will be: 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2. The light bulb started off, which means that number 1 will turn it on. Number 2 however will then off again. This will go on until you come to this stage: 1 2 1 2 - The last 2 or prisoner 2 will notice that NEVER MIND

You could make this problem harder by 1) not knowing the initial state of the light bulb (I.e. it could be either on or off) 2) pick prisoners at random times instead of each day (I.e. on your first turn you can’t know if anyone else has been there before) There is a solution for this, can you find it?

The initial state doesn't even matter. The group would decide what to do and just set it accordingly. The second point is irrelevant since the method doesn't rely on the interval. If the chosen one isn't first, then the first person in sets the switch to the desired state if it's not already like that and it's like normal. It just would make it take longer.

The second point is to make sure that you can't know if you are first since everyone is placed into different cells completely isolated from each other (it has nothing to do with the intervals). When you are being picked there is no way to know if anyone has been picked before or if you are first. For instance, if the bulb is on as an initial state, then when the first person enters the room, he or she can't know if the light is on because someone switch it or because he or she is first (also he or she doesn't know what the initial state was).

Easier solution, before entering the room you make yourself bleed someway(biting the skin/over biting a fingernail). When you enter, wipe a streak of blood on the wall. Once 10 streaks of blood are dried on the wall any prisoner can state we all have entered.

my solution is that the first person who enters the room is the only one who turns the light on and everyone else turns the light off once. So the first person has to count how many times he turned the light on.

Your solution is the same as the one mentioned in the video, IF the prisoners know who the first person in the room is. However, it is clearly mentioned that they are in isolation and will not know who the first person in the room is.

I was very close to solve but could not do so. This video was spectacular. I loved it.

how about if you are a prisoner who's given a chance to have freedom by your captor. two folded papers are in front of you. you have seen earlier that your captor had written "death" in both papers. you are asked to choose which one would you like to have, not knowing that there's no "life" included in the choices. your captor is finding a way to outsmart you to lead you to your disaster. how would you outwit your captor?

This was an awesome and tricky riddle great video :)

Holy crap I actually got this one by myself!

I have another solution, next to the light switch each prisoner will leave a small scratch in the wall for only the first time they enter the room with the light. Once a prisoner sees 10 scratches on the wall (including his) he will know everyone visited the room.

Loved it!!

My method was that no one turns the switch on until they have been there the second time only, and if you have been there the first time and the switch is on you turn it off, they do that until the light is off for a long time

Whoever goes first sets the light to the off position.

You might be stuck there forever though with that method, i hope they give you food and water hahaha

I solved it. it took me couple days though!

Weren't all 10 of them in the "great hall" on he day of their capture. On the next day the first prisoner can point this out to the advanced race - game over.

Every time one of them goes into the hall the first time, they could just take a dump on the floor, or rip off a fingernail or something, and when there's ten of them, they know everyone's been there.

I rhough of a different but similar solution.. one which would nominate the first person to go in the hall and instead of counting the number of times the bulb was turnned off by the nominated person, I counted the number of times he turned it on.. basically a reversed version...

I am three quarters here for the accent.

It will atleast take 18 days And the probability of that happening is 9!/10^18 which is equal to 3.6×10^-13 So it will take a awful lot of time

Make everyone able to use switch(either on or off ),but they can only use it once,so if somebody come 2nd time,he wont be able to use switch.After some time when u see that light bulb stood cool every time u re taken to prison hall,u can guess that there is almost no chance that somebody wasnt in hall.Is this legit strategy???

The first problem is that they'll only let a prisoner into the room once a day. There's plenty of time for the lamp to heat up or cool down. The second problem is that no single prisoner would be able to tell, how many times the switch has been used, since they cannot communicate with each other from the cells
