Can You Solve It? | Many Will Get Wrong| Order Of Operations

Order of operations is one of the fundamental concepts we learn in basic math. However, even seemingly simple expressions can trip people up if they don't carefully apply the order of operations rules.
By walking through this tricky example, you'll gain a deeper understanding of properly applying the order of operations. This will help reinforce the rules and ensure you don't make careless mistakes on expressions that appear straightforward at first glance.
for reviewing the rules of order of operations watch my video:
• Order Of Operations | ...
Whether you're a student struggling with order of operations or want to test your skills, this video will be an eye-opening look at expressions that aren't as easy as they seem. Be prepared for some 'aha!' moments when we reveal the correct solutions."

Ah! The Magic Decoder Ring that only works for English speakers. As a (poorly) recovering math head, I can hardly describe my disdain for PEMDAS/BOMDAS (it is only known as PEMDAS in the USA and France; in most other countries that recognize the acronym's meaning it is BOMDAS). In either case it is execrable. The writer of an expression is responsible for its clarity, just as a writer of text is. Nested parentheses may look worse, but the functionality in the real world is vastly better. Example: a store has shoes @ $24 and socks @ $14 per package, both on sale 15% off. We also need a sweater @ $35... not on sale, naturally! The transaction is taxed at 55%. (Oops! I wasn't supposed to announce the new rate until next week!) We could write it as (24+14) *1.15+35 (1.55). It doesn't look bad, but relying on PEMDAS/BOMDAS hardly clarifies the situation at all. Most important is that at a glance it looks okay but it is horribly messed up, giving the wrong answer for reasons that can be hard to pin down. Nested parentheses gives us ((24+14) * (1-0.15) + 35) * (1+.55) The first term is the combination of the two sale items, followed by the discount. Then we add the sweater, and we pay the base amount plus tax on it all. Any of those items can be changed without incurring the displeasure of PEMDAS, the ogre that hides in the cave. Most of all, we are not forbidden on pain of being all wrong from simplifying the explicit terms within the parentheses. When we decide we have it right, the first step is to compact it: ((38*0.85)+35) (1.55). BTW: I am a fan of keeping the leading zero for decimal values; that little decimal point could be missed. Far fewer ways to go wrong unnoticed. When the choice is convention or clarity, always go with clarity. This is mathematics, a discipline that is used to track all the monetary value in the world. "In today's news, the IMF announced a 178 trillion dollar error in calculating the cost of feeding Europe. France insisted PEMDAS is better than BOMDAS, and in the furor and hair pulling melee mistakes were made. President Macron of France explained, "Mon Dieu! I didn't know he was wearing a toupée." Don't say I didn't warn you.

In reality no sane person would write this equation this way. I’m paranoid so I’d use parentheses. But it’s also the case that it’s far more easy to understand for the next guy with parentheses as well. And you never know if the guy who wrote the parser did it right too. Assuming he did is asking for trouble.

You may be paranoid, but your way is the sound way of writing the expression. Parentheses clarify, PEMDAS/BOMDAS build in obscurity.
