This is the best explanation against shooting a 40S&W to a 10mm gun. I watched several videos on You Tube advocating shooting a 40S&W to a 10mm gun. This so called experts should pull their videos immediately. Common sense dictates that shooting an ammunition NOT indented for firearm is dangerous and ill advised. Very good presentation. Thank you sir,

Glocks can safely shoot 40 s&w, other pistols not so much, shooting 40 s&w out of a 10mm Glock you lose about 15 fps, so not much, just because someone can make a video about something doesn't mean they know what they're talking about, as far as accuracy, it's barely effected.

A couple of years ago I ran about 100 rounds of 40 through my 10mm as an experiment. I had no ignition problems but a lot stovepipes because the round doesn't have enough power to compress a 10mm recoil spring. Other than that I have no permanent issues. I knew about the powder residue problem so I cleaned out the chamber after the range session.

Other guys have shot 25,000 rounds of .40 S&W out of their 10mm pistol and have never had any extractor problems. The recoil pushes the brass back toward the extractor and doesn't put any wear on the extractor. What would happen if you shot some 10mm ammo that had brass that was trimmed a little short? Maybe, just maybe, a 10mm would make a fair choice for a shtf weapon. In a pinch being able to shoot 40 cal if 10mm wasn't available to protect yourself or feed your family could be a benefit. As long as you can obtain the proper ammo I agree there is little to no reason to shoot ammunition that is not designed for the weapon.

It isn't something you should just expect, One shouldn't just try. Jamming rounds into guns to see if it works, but if you're 20 30 years or 20 30 guns in the shooting and you're looking to add something that works with other things that you got asking, this question doesn't deserve a belligerent answer. Especially if you like carbines and pistols or 357s and 38s

I have put thousands of rounds of .40SW through my Glock 20. The pistol can handle almost double the chamber pressure of .40sw. My extractor is fine. Also most 10mm ammo now is basically .40SW anyways. so who gives a shit. I can also link you to an Austria Mil TM where .40SW is an adequate alternative to 10mm. There is no difference in accuracy compared to my G23.

The shorter ACP case creates a carbon ring and then comes the high pressure Rowland that gets traction on the ring. Same smell, different flavor.

This too is one of my pet peeves as well. The 10mm is one of my favorite rounds so I too often hear people claiming it perfectly ok to run 40 S&W in their 10mm and when I bother to respond I'll point out everything you did in this video. Technically it works, just like it technically works firing a .380 Auto out of a 9mm Luger, but it's not a good thing to do unless it's an imperative (i.e., post apocalypse supply issues or something of the like). The only reason I can figure why shooting the 40 S&W out of a 10mm has become so popular is the lack of commercially manufactured practice/target rounds, which is why I got into hand loading. I hope your video becomes the stock response every time somebody asks if it's ok to do.

I had a hillbily friend who trimmed off a 3mm long ring off a steel 10mm case. He then inserted that into the chamber. This allows him to get proper headspacing for .40 S&W when he wants to use it, because it will headspace off that insert. Pretty slick, huh?

One of the things you didn't mention, is some brands of guns can fire out of battery. If you build up a carbon ring by shooting 40 S&W out of a 10mm, can possibly cause a catastrophic failure.

Like the rifles... the gun is made for the more powerful round so it show take the 40 without blowing up {which might be a topic all on it's own). After your video... will stay away. I don't own either caliber ; but that was a very clear explanation of the issues . I can't see if people care for their firearm , they would do that. Maybe to save your life if zombies are approaching. Before I knew better , I have dropped a round in the chamber on a 760 remington 3006 pump and maybe my 1911 a couple of times then jammed the bolt or slide home. I learned how un-cool that was.

Yes, the push feed bolts so not care for snapping the extractor into the extractor groove. I have done it myself, as we all have to learn. I would agree, in an emergency you do what you have to do but for standard range use and such keep the .40 out of your 10mm.
