Can you play Xbox Series X/S games from an external Hard Drive in 2022?
Ойындар
Not long after the Xbox Series X and S first released it became apparent that some of the optimised games for the systems (such as The Master Chief Collection) would run quite happily from external usb drives. This was quite useful as it meant people could save space on the internal drives (especially on the Series X) and save money by not buying the expensive Seagate expansions drives. The list of optimised games that would run from usb was vanishingly small, though, and seemed to be getting smaller. So fast forward to 2022, and I wanted to see which games will run from usb drives now. Here's what I found.

Thank you for this, it makes understanding this whole storage balancing thing a bit better. I mainly play 360 or Xbox one games so the trick of looking at the info and stuff and knowing where I should download it is helpful.
I play 3 games. Call of duty, madden, and NBA2k. And I have a Xbox series S 😞😞😞 I can only download 2 out of 3 games. This is dumb. I'm starting to dislike Microsoft for this.
I have a Samsung t7, and series x/s games work on it. Only certain games of course. AC odyssey & Orgins works with quick resume functions as well. Skyrim works, master chief collection works. And a few others as well. I was shocked that they all were optimized and quick resume worked for those games listed all being saved on my Samsung T7 ssd

Thank you for this info. In the market right now for the best ext ssd for my series S. Need to move shit over before starfield comes. My console is too full anyway. Not all my games are X/S or XboxGen9 so I should be okay. Seems like that Samsung t7 is the way to go. Tho I am looking at the seagate ext game drive/game hub. I basically just want one that can also drag and drop at a decent rate when I need to switch games to and fro. So I don't need to uninstall/reinstall
This video is great! I just got my series X recently and with only 1tb of internal memory every little bit counts. Most of my game library are older games that can go on my usb drive anyway, but I have a couple of the gen9aware games that I would rather keep on external. Thanks for this video!
so what hard drive do i need to be able to have games on it and still be playable? is that possible?
I've got a seagate 1tb hard drive but most games still don't work on there
Okay so I’m confused. I have a 4tb sea gate drive and some people are telling me I can play next gen games off these specific drives, but others tell me I can only play these certain games. Can somebody help me out?

You can only play these games and maybe a couple more that I didn’t spot. As I say in the video, there are easy ways to check and see if a game will run from a USB drive.

I have over 200 games on 2 external 10TB HDD drives and never had this problem that this video is speaking of🤷🏼♂️
Guys, does xbox recognize Xbox X/S compatibile games, and save them in console storage unit, or Do I have to transfer the games every single time?
It seems to me that whether or not someone can play optimized for Series X/S games is convoluted because it depends on whether or not the file type is Gen9Aware or not. The forward compatibility of your typical external hard drive that is 1 terabyte or more is, therefore, not absolute. I find this to be problematic because if I install a Gen9Aware game on my Seagate Game Drive, I will likely not inherit any of the game's upgrades unless it is installed directly on the console.

Ps5 is samething.
I got my series S for $280. I personally can’t justify $220 for a 1TB drive when I got like a $30 1TB external drive. I’ll just transfer games even with a 10-20 minute wait.

i understand where your coming from but changing external usb to default location doesn’t work for me, dead by daylight installer there as my setting default told it to but it wouldn’t run without being internal

As I said in the video, X/S enhanced games won’t run from usb drives. There are loads of games (mainly back catalogue games) that will, though.
If I Download a iso file for a 360 game onto a usb Flash drive can I play it on a series x ?

No, sorry.
Thanks. My question is if I’ll buy external SSD Seagate (not the card) will I able to run S/X games from it? Just because there’s cards hard to come buy and dang expensive. I rather save up on PlayStation then buying that card just for the memory…. Thanks I’m advance. Have a nice day.

Unfortunately most games that are enhanced for Series X/S won't work if they are installed on anything other than the internal drive or the official. expansion

I have never had a single problem🤷🏼♂️ I use a 10TB external Seagate and a 10TB WD HDD drive
I've downloaded Far Cry 5 onto my 2tb game drive and it's Xbox series X/S enhanced and it works
Thanks for this video. It explains a lot. So basically Microsoft's XBSX games require faster storage. It must be a new technology that regular USBs don't yet have. Sounds like they entered into a working agreement with Seagate to develop those faster storage cards. So I'll only install the Gen9 games on there. So that just means I can plug in my external USB drives with my last gen. games into my XBSX and be ready to go once I've installed the game disc, correct??
@JoeChip
Жыл бұрын
I would plug the drive in before inserting the game disk. That way, once you put the disk in the drive it should automatically detect that the game is installed and allow you to play it. It will probably need to update the save file from the cloud but you should be playing in under a minute (depending on your internet speed). Hope that helps.

Love how Call of Duty, a heavily online based game requires you to be on either the consoles Internal or their ridiculously expensive external SSD slot. I upgraded recently from a WD HDD to a SanDisk external SSD to be greeted to this nonsense. Speeds on the SSD definitely suffice. Anyone know of any work arounds for the online play?
Wow and I thought I have seen the most weird glitches this tops it off
I just bought the series s and have a PS5 should have just got the x with the amount of storage 😂
1tb isn't anything so what are you supposed to do when then that expansion card fills up buy another and swap them out when u wanna play a certain game that's stored on it really stupid, anything to make more money, to be honest Xbox knew the series x games would take up up storage but the series x only gives you 1tb lol, the console should have came with atleast 8tb internal storage since they knew the the games would take more storage
@JoeChip

8TB would have made the console far too expensive, though.
Can you play fortnite and minecraft from external HDD ?

Yes
xbox being ridiculous they should allow you to use any drive
Good
Funny how you can play then via cloud but not via a usb lol
I hate it because COD takes up 90% of the storage on my Xbox series s. I can’t move it to external, so games that I can’t move basically are f*cked because there is not enough room for other games that also can’t be played on external. SMH.
Here's the list of Xbox 23 Series X/S Enhanced games that I found would still run from an external (USB) drive in 2022. If you find others please comment and let me know. Ark Survival Evolved Assassins Creed Origins Conan Exiles Descenders The Division 2 DJMax Respect/V The Elder Scrolls Skyrim For Honor The Good Life Loot River Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Minecraft Dungeons Ori and the Will of the Wisps Sea of Thieves Shadow of the Tomb Raider (Thanks to Indigo Montoya for this one) Sniper Elite 4 Star Wars: Squadrons State of Decay 2 Stelaris Visage Warhammer: Vermintide 2 We Happy Few Zombie Army Dead War

Wow Microsoft scummy
@jam_1138
2 жыл бұрын
Which part is scummy? The games that are gen9aware, are titles that have been optimised for the Series consoles but not the velocity architecture. As the games are optimised to take advantage of the velocity architecture needing the faster SSD they lose they ability to run from USB. It would be nice to run everything from usb but I prefer the games to be optimised to the systems full advantage. Sony do the same with the PS5, PS5 titles can’t be run from USB.

@@jam_1138 Absolutely. This isn’t scummy at all. And there is still a huge number of back-compat games that run from Usb.

@@jam_1138 Absolutely. I have an 8Tb usb drive attached to my series X and it’s been really useful. I actually just brought it over from my One X, so it’s mainly got Xbox One and backwards compatible (OG Xbox and 360) games on it. It’s great not having to juggle too much and instead just have a big library of games sitting there ready to play.

@@JoeChip I’m lucky enough to have an expansion card but I use an external 1tb SSD for back compatible games. 👍
This is the most annoying shit this generation brought. I don't care if it runs faster. Let me run the games on the drive I want to use. There's no reason some of these games should be SSD only. Things like 2D games especially. I can run them on any drive on a PC. Why does the Xbox gotta treat us like we are retarded? I'll take longer load times. I used to use those for piss breaks.
