"Can You Not Smell A RAT There?!" - Keir Starmer Sets Out Six Pledges Ahead Of General Election

Talk's Mike Graham is joined by chief political commentator at The Independent John Rentoul to analyse Keir Starmer's new pledges.
Starmer will launch Labour’s doorstep offer to voters ahead of the general election, with a set of “first steps” for government.
In a launch event at a potential electoral battleground in Essex, the Labour leader will set out his party’s offer, building on the missions for what it has branded a “decade of national renewal” should it win when voters go to the polls.
Among its first steps “to change Britain” the opposition will aim to deliver economic stability, cut NHS waiting times, launch a new border security command, set up publicly-owned energy firm Great British Energy, crack down on antisocial behaviour and recruit 6,500 new teachers.
The steps are aimed at providing “gimmick-free”, fully costed and funded pledges to the electorate that could be implemented within the five years a Parliament usually sits, and are expected to be foregrounded in campaigning material ahead of the general election.

@@rickykeith1601 Demographic forecasts identify a falling population globally with falling birth rates everywhere. The birth rate in the UK is now below 1.5 against the replacement rate of 2.1. Immigration will not overcome this as it will fall naturally as populations fall around the world. SE Asia has a huge problem with some countries having a birth rate of well under 1. India's population will begin to fall in the next few years and China's already is. South Korea is forecast to fall from 50m to 15m unless something changes. Countries will need to keep their own populations in place. Europe's population is forecast to fall by as much as 25% this century and only some areas of Africa (not all) will see population growth.

The bank announced they would start selling their gilts. Then liz announced the gov't would flood the market with gilts in the mini budget. The Bank would normally absorb any extra supply by buying those gilts to keep prices stable, but this is the opposite of what their announcement was the day before. The Bank did in the end reverse their position due to the minibudget and started to buy gilts to stabilise the market. The Bank should have been informed really. The impact of the mini budget was a crash in gilt prices. Most pensions (annuities) are backed by these gilts as they are supposed to be low risk. As the prices dropped, so did the pool of money used to fund the pension payments, creating a risk the payments could not be made (default). If gilts proces drop, then their rate of return increases. As gilts are usually low risk and stable, they are used as a marker for interest rates (the risk free rate). As interest rates rose, so did tracker loans ie mortgages. This put people under alot of pressure to come up with higher payments at short notice at risk of default and losing their homes.

So, manifesto commitments are now pledges that will go unfulfilled . Starmers 6 pledges are as likely to happen as Rishi's 5 pledges. 😆

Labour MP Sam Tarry saying we should take in 1000's of Hamas supporting refugees. Labour MPs ought to be asking themselves why NO Arab nation is taking anyone from Gaza. But they won't because it won't be them at risk from Islamist terror, it'll be those of us without the security detail.

We have population growth in the millions, not enough housing or services to sustain that growth and Sam Tarry thinks it would be a good idea to set up an office in Gaza to enable as many Hamas sympathisers as possible to come to the U.K. beware of voting these people into power.

@@stevec6427 Are you not familiar with the workings of the Left? In 1979 Londoners elected a GLC led by a moderate. Almost instantly he was replaced by Ken Livingstone. It is quite easy to see Rayner and her supporters pulling the same stunt. Remember Starmer tried to fir Rayner and couldn't do it. I don't think there's the same animosity between Lynch and Raynor. I'm hoping Starmer is trusted little enough to end up doing a Kinnock 92 rather than a Blair 97. The Conservatives putting Penny Mordaunt in charge could yet pull that off.
