Welcome to "Could I Live Here: Philippines." This series explores the charm and practicalities of living in different locations. If you are considering retiring in the Philippines or being a digital nomad in the Philippines, this series is for you.
Camotes, meaning sweet potato, comprises two small islands connected by a Spanish-built Causeway. With a climate of 30°C year-round, it's ideal for digital nomads or those seeking a tranquil home. The main town is San Francisco, accompanied by Poro and Consuelo.
*Where to Stay:*
Short-term beach accommodations are plentiful, but long-term options are centered in town. Condos and villas are under construction, with land prices ranging from 500 pesos to 11 million for 5,000 square meters.
*Cost of Living:*
Living on a budget of $50 a day, the actual expenditure was around $35. Food is reasonably priced, with breakfast at 75 pesos, dinner between 150 and 200 pesos, and beers just over 100 pesos. Accommodation costs range from 800 to 1,500 pesos. Transportation, including scooter rental at 300 pesos per day, contributes to expenses.
*Getting Around and Getting There:*
Ferries from Danao run regularly, and there's a direct one from Mactan airport. Scooter rental or purchase (around 45,000 pesos) is recommended for convenient travel on the island.
*Service and Utilities:*
Internet speeds vary but are generally between 10 and 50 Mbps. Electricity is stable with minimal fluctuations. The island has a significant freshwater lake, ensuring a reliable water supply. Healthcare facilities, pharmacies, and ATMs are available.
*Safety:*
Camotes is deemed safe, with minimal security presence. The community is trustworthy, even offering flexibility with payments. While natural events like landslides and floods occur, they are well-marked, and the island is not prone to major cyclones.
*Things to Do:*
Camotes offers diverse activities such as beach lounging, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, cave exploration, bird watching, and hiking. Abandoned structures provide historical exploration, and the island boasts private white beaches.
*Places to Eat:*
Local food dominates, with limited international cuisine. Notable mentions include fresh seafood, fried chicken, and unique fries. A variety of karinderias offer home-cooked meals.
*Shopping:*
Supermarkets like Prince's cater to daily needs, and local markets provide fresh produce. Sari-sari stores are prevalent, and specific items can be sourced from the mainland.
*Other Expats:*
Currently, there are few expats, but development projects and an upcoming airport suggest potential growth.
*Luxury Items:*
Luxury options include massage or spa treatments, though the island lacks high-end resorts.
*Would We Live Here:*
While the slow pace, cash reliance, and ferry dependency pose challenges, the laid-back atmosphere, affordability, friendly community, and natural beauty make Camotes an appealing place to consider for a long-term stay.
*Conclusion:*
Camotes Islands offer a unique blend of tranquility and natural beauty. With careful consideration of personal preferences and priorities, it could be an ideal place to call home.

So sweet you guys 🥰 I felt like I've been tour in my own country 😁 haven't been there yet but thank you for giving a lot of details, seems it's a nice, peaceful and beautiful place 😍. I suggest visiting "Dumaguete especially in Valencia" so many good food choices, Sunday market, forest camp, falls and more. I bet you'll like it there too. People are also polite and gentle and respectful. Must try 😊

think it 10 times before making a decision to retire. it may not be your lifestyle, you get excited maybe because of the weather and cheap peso against the US dollar. it's ok if you got business earning good money you can live in a beautiful place with servants. it's good for a short holiday not a long one.

Using the Philippines flag on your videos is total disrespect of the flag here, and will get you 12 months in prison, and up to a 50,000 peso fine. Even government departments are not allowed to use the flag on their department badge, and foreigners are not even allowed to touch the flag here in the Philippines.
