Based on sound alone I though bow A was middle price, bow B was the inexpensive one, and bow C the most expensive. However, considering that the most expensive bows would be wood and not carbon fiber I would expect bow C to be the cheapest one. As the cellist you experience the feedback the bow gives you and adjust your technique accordingly. Proof that you can make a cheap bow sing!

I had that experienced that when I spent 5 hours trying different cellos! The last cello( which I didn’t know the price, when I first picked it up!) It played like butter and seemed to say, “Don’t worry, Ken, I’ve played that Ab thousands of times!” It was incredible. Then I learned that it was built in around 1786 and had a price tag of $178,000.00!

Honestly, I can't hear the difference, but if you, the artist can, that's where the the true difference is. And that is part of your art. Thanks for sharing. Much respect.

I didn't see the answers yet, but I only could hear a clear difference between A and (B&C), I can't hear much difference between B and C, but if I could choose I would have chosen for B.

Interesting that A was the expensive one, it sounded the worst in my experience taking out the factor of playability of course...

I ruled out Bow C pretty quickly. It just didn't have the sound projection or clarity that A and B had. I had to listen to almost all the selections before giving A the top grade. B was a very close second. Both had a smooth, even, amazing sound. But I can't afford a 5K or 50K bow :(

This is why I will NEVER spend too much on a bow. As a professional cellist, I could hardly hear any discernible difference between these three bows. Speaks, perhaps, to your immense abilities! ;-) Myself, I've used a $600 carbon fibre bow for 11 years now, and never felt like I missed out on anything.

The value of a bow is in the ease of drawing the maximum sound, without exertion, from the cello. Responsiveness vis a vie spicatto, staccato etc. AT all volume levels is imperative. I had a Lupot which was magnificent for solo work, but allowed me to be overbearing when playing chamber music. The proper bow is essential to perform to the demands of the performance. Great topic. Keep up the challenging and thoughtful presentations.

My assumption was that bow A was the 50000 bow. But I chose B = 1euro.. and, of course, C = 5000 euros. When you see the price of a good bow, you are a little bit depressed, thinking that you will need to be satisfied playing with a 200-euros... very often, it seems to me that my bow is keeping my performance down, even if I am far from being a professional. So, somehow, I have to accept this limit or start saving in order to buy a better bow!

B worked the least well by a considerable margin: beginnings of rapid notes were not clean, overall a bit scratchy tone. Between A and C there was not an obvious difference in quality, but I would give a slight preference to A which seemed to give a darker sound in your hands. Speaking of hands, a valued senior colleage once advised me that if you are trying bows and having someone else play bows for you to, you should only listen to the first five seconds of each bow. After that, a good player adjusts to the bow and you are hearing the player more than the bow. I certainly thought you sounded very much like yourself on all three bows, though I'm sure they felt very different to you.

It's obvious that bow C is the lowest quality one when u play the fast running passages. The clarity and responsiveness are definitely less. Between A and B, a bit harder to tell, though, during the slower pieces, A seems to have a bigger projection. I guess the sound based on video is subpar, but the cellist will know the difference in ease of playing. Truth is, you sounded great with all 3. As a cello student, I guess I have to continue to practise hard cos the player is the key to how the music sounds

I like bow A, then C, then B. A is te smoothest and makes the best/easiest contact with the string, gets the string vibrating fastest. B sounds very harsh and it makes the sound sharp, edgy. I think?? No idea,.... I will finish the video now.

That was an interesting comparison. The cheap bow seemed apparent since it sounded gritty, but I thought you just seemed more comfortable with your bow, so I selected that one because of how you played. What you are demonstrating is probably far more apparent and important to the player (within reason). Your sound was satisfactory with all three because of you, not the bow. A poor instrument will be far more obvious, but the player can still compensate. Strings, rosin and hair will also make a difference. Another remarkable effect is that excellent players can have different preferences while still sounding great. It's a fun discussion.

This what drives me batty concerning celli bows and cellos. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO MORTGAGE YOUR HOUSE TO GET A DECENT INSTRUMENT!! And I kid you not after I had acquired a new cello, I went to my trusty violin shop sat down with my cello, given a drawerful of bows to try. I played all of them in a matter of an hour or so. I went the next day tried a few prospects snd came down to one that only cost me about less than $600. The other ones i tried were in the thousands. Just look for an instrument or bow that sounds good, projects well and do the same when searching fir a bow to match it- comfort, weight and playability.

The difference on the video is most noticeable at the beginning of the note, or the attack. Bows B and C have much harsher attacks compared to A for me.

With comparisons like these, I always wished people would include a product that the average player would use. Maybe I'm being presumptuous but most people don't have a 5000 EUR bow or a 1 EUR bow. So I would like to see one that is like 1000 or 2000 EUR bow to demonstrate what is the difference from a more average bow. Since yes of course 1 EUR is worse than 5000 EUR... but I bet MANY 1000 EUR bows sound better than MUCH more expensive bows on some peoples cellos. Anyway I enjoyed this video a lot, thanks for the content

I think A was the best one by my ears by a hair(no pun intended)...but the tiny difference doesnt justify the 50,000 price tag and maybe reflects the comfort that you the player are having that comes through slightly to the listener.

Listening only, I had the B picked out due to the sweetness of the sound, but A had a power that was tangible even through my AirPods. I couldn’t pick between A & B at first. Then I watched again and could SEE how easily you were playing with A. Definitely less work. Eliminated C immediately.

I'm sick and tired of this click bait nonesense about the prices of bows and instruments. Why didn't you try a $200 and a $500 bow eh? After this its the player that makes the difference. Like saying that a $15000 cello sounds worse than a $100,000 one. Nonesense.
