Can You Guess the Years of These 19th Century Dresses? | Historical Fashion Game Show

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to our historical fashion game show! In this new series called "Guess the Date," I guess the year various antique dresses from a specific century were made. This installment covers the 19th century, probably the period of historical fashion I am most familiar with.
Joining this series is my close friend, Brittany Bishop, acting as judge, scorekeeper, and selector-of-dresses.
How many of these late Georgian and Victorian dresses will I get correct? How many gowns will confuse and mislead me because historical clothing can be complex? Find out in this episode of "Guess the Date: 19th Century Edition"!
The next century we'll be covering in a few months is the 15th century, which should be a lot of fun because I know almost nothing about the period!
Thank you so much for watching!

    The timing of this light-hearted video is unfortunate in some regards, due to the current war between Ukraine and Russia. I considered delaying the release of such a jovial video, however, I felt it necessary to upload as scheduled, for laughter can often serve as a welcome means of coping and distracting oneself from the difficulties we face in the world. I hope that this video can bring you some amusement and entertainment during these challenging moments. As a colonised ethnic minority of the Russian Federation, I stand united with the people of Ukraine. My heart breaks over what is happening and I hope that you and your loved ones stay safe and well during these uncertain times. Here are some wonderful Ukrainian small businesses that you can support (I'm not sure how shipping is going to look in the future, as so much is changing right now moment to moment): -My amazing corset maker! Oh Kiddo, I am so sorry. This is a horrible situation. If that 'man' bombs Kiev he should face War Crime Charges. I'm Gen X, so Sarajevo was destroyed before our eyes while I was in university. I thought we were done with the heavy echo of war drums in Europe for at least a few decades, if ever again. There's still munitions in the ground of Flanders Fields - we're still coming to terms with the lasting scars from World War One. Stay safe. I hope your family is safe. Oh man. I would have never expected Putin to actually go through with this. Way to start 2022. I'm so sorry. I was a teenager in Germany during the Balkan war and had classmates/friends, who were refugees from that region. Never thought, we would ever have a war so close to home again. You would think, any country that was in any way involved in WW2 would know better, then to start a war over territory ever again. We're all worried sick about what's going to happen now. Distraction is definitely welcome.

    I appreciate your comment about "brown" and how we were lied to. Same with the dark ages. We were taught through history lessons that when the Romans left, the lights were switched off and the people suffered. Agriculture diminished, no products such as soap. Film always showed the people in dull, grey/brown clothes, dirty, etc. Archeology is now proving that when the Romans left, the people thrived and carried on. Agriculture actually expanded, teeth were healthy, the clothes they wore were vibrant in colour.

    Hello Ms. Vassi. I am so sorry for what is happening in Eastern Europe as I type. Keep your loved ones as close as you can. How close is your families Region to the lines being redrawn. You all are in my prayers (if that's not too intrusive...). As for the video, just popped out halfway to say thank you. This was wonderfully done. And we are all going to have to remind ourselves to laugh for the next while. This was a good and funny step, well done. You two making each other chuckle should be something that happens again, please & thankyou. Take care. - Cathy (&, mostly accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi {oh, and as for this weirdo of a town, the Emergencies Act has been rescinded and it's been quiet for 3 whole days - maybe this can be a trend for the year, please, no more 'let's try to be worse than 2020's dumpster fire' years...}

    Thank you very much Cathy! My family are far from the lines of conflict thankfully but the war will impact the everyday citizens on both sides whether physically or financially, since there is bound to be shortages all around Eastern Europe. Many of my coworkers are Ukrainian and having to seek safety right now and that’s been the most heartbreaking part of this. I hope that there’s peace soon and an end to this violence. I’m glad things have settled down around you mostly in Canada. I heard the convoy was shut down in the downtown area of Ottawa and thought of you (and how you must have more peace now haha)

    @@VBirchwood This is going to impact the world, I'm afraid to say. One of our Godkids, their friend at school (about 16 or 17 yrs old) just got a draft notice from the Hungarian Reservists - kid was born there and grew up here. That's the level of desperate governments we're dealing with. I hope your coworkers applications for Refugee Status are successful. I don't know which would be worse - seeking shelter in the subway from bombs, or being forced to watch it from afar. May we all get through this. May this not drag out into something truly horrific. As for here? Experiencing the occupation of Ottawa - four weeks of hate-crimes and assaults at the hands of people who love them some 'nazi' and 'confederate' swag. And then it somehow all rolled up and headed our of town. We're still all wondering if it's actually over, or if there's a second act. Absolutely surreal - in a matter of hours they had the city chopped up into zones and checkpoints...

  • @VBirchwood

    Wow how bizarre! I hope their friend is okay and will be safe. It’s all such an awful situation definitely and in this case it’s coping somehow with the lesser of two atrocities, and some international students and expats from countries like Africa now too are sadly being denied border crossing into neighbouring countries like Poland etc. It’s awful that racism is prevailing even during a war. It’s just another dynamic to the already very difficult circumstances. I pray for everyone impacted by what‘s going on. I’m so sorry you had to go through all that but I’m glad you at least have done peace for now and hopefully it stays that way.

    @@VBirchwood Well. That answers the question as to how the Refugees into Ukraine are dealing with this. Being turned back at the boarders just sounds like a slow moving war crime. May the Trickster Luck be with them in finding the back door out of there. Racism has the very bad habit of getting worse during a war, I'm afraid to say. As for the Godkids, teenage friends Hungarian Reservists draft notice. I don't think the Canadian government is going to be much help. Yes, he's a landed immigrant, but he's still subject to the laws back home. Canada traditionally take a hands off approach. I think this is one of those situations where the final power really rests with the clerk assigned to the file. As for here - we've just lived through almost a month of not being safe walking out our front door, crossing through checkpoints to get to the pharmacy, yadda-yadda. So. A tiny, miniscule, dip-your-toes-in-the-water sampler of what the people of Kiev are living through. And I honestly cannot begin to imagine the level of terror that has to be a constant heart beat of the city. Long guns and Molotov cocktails being issued to civilians by city government. Putin has absolutely *no* idea what he's just unleashed. If he's foolish enough to send in ground troops, they are about to be wiped out in a way that future historians will be studying for a very long time. God help us all. Prayers continuing, candles lit, incense curling it's way to heaven... In the meantime, stay safe. Stay well. Let your humour get as black as it needs to get - laughter is a distancing technique and people were cracking-wise all the way through WW2. What's the lesson of primary school? Laugh at the bully. And pray for a safe end.

    Thank you! These are mainly British/American, but there is a lot of European influence as well, and European/British fashions influenced Russian aristocracy, however there are over 100 ethnic minority groups in Russia that all have their own unique form of folk fashion (I’m a Tatar for example, and our fashion looks very different than what was happening in Britain, minus a bit of influence here and there). Thank you!! My family are ethnic minorities of the Russian Federation. So very much on the side that was colonised. I think throughout all of this it’s so important for us all to bring humanity to the people of both countries. I just hope that all Russians don’t get blamed for the actions of the corrupt politicians (one in particular). Around 19% of Russian citizens are ethnic minorities actually, many of which don’t even identify as Russian ethnically, rather it’s the citizenship they hold and language they’ve had to learn. It’s such a diverse place and many Russians (everyone I know for example), whether ethnic minorities or not, don’t want war. It sucks that power hungry leaders can destroy the lives of innocents.
