Can You Explain This Mallard's Behavior?
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
It’s important for me to remember that commonly seen ducks are no less impressive than rare ones.
For instance, a male mallard is stunning by any standard. The female is beautiful too. The hen in this video illustrates this perfectly when she lifts herself from the water to shake off her wings. (I think you will enjoy this. I edited a segment so that it’s in slow motion and I froze a particularly nice pose.)
The male’s behavior drew my attention. You will see why in this video. He makes a call and bobs and jerks his head in a way I have never seen. I looked at Cornell websites and xeno-canto but couldn’t find a call like this one or an explanation that satisfied me.
Do you know what this behavior means? Is he agitated or is it something else?
I saw this Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) couple on our local pond in West Sacramento, California, USA on 8 March 2024.

Thanks for your kindness.
The female was preening and the male was preparing for takeoff. I duck watch and have pet ducks, they bob their heads and stretch their necks out like that when they're getting ready to fly or jump.
