I had been experimenting with epoxy and wood chess board. Your idea of adding an 1/8" space for the epoxy to flow is masterful and something that I had not thought of. This came out beautifully. Great job!

I know this is a year late, but you could have used doubled sided tape to hold the wood blocks down… when I make molds, I used double sided tape to hold things down to keep them from moving or floating up… one other thing to use instead that caulking, hot glue…. this board is GORGEOUS…. I am really impressed at how you built this from scratch…. You definitely have a talent :) I love how you added that swirl effect…. That is so cool….

Thanks for watching. The other thought I had was pouring a very thin layer of epoxy first then set the blocks into it and let it cure for about 12 hours before doing my color pour. This would allow me to move things around a little if I needed to. I have never tried hot glue. Alex fast drying caulk is pretty cheap and has seemed to work well for me. I appreciate the time you took and the thoughtfulness in your response.

@@BenVanKirk you are welcome… I thought your board was beautiful… Alex caulk is actually good stuff… I didn’t catch that was what you used… if you did thin pours like that, make sure before you pour you next one that the resin is still tacky and not fully cured… if it’s cured, the next layer won’t adhere to it properly and it could very easily split or come apart…. You really did do a great job :)

@@BenVanKirk One created a frame with inlaid LED RGB strip lights that acted as storage. While I thought the hinge top chess board was good, I think he could have done better inlaying it into the frame a little rather than just sit on top. Another made the base with an outter light up Resin frame around the board then a wood frame, then a second strip that projected light onto just the board itself. Allowing a two toned colored projection.

I saw that and had to giggle… but only people who play chess would actually catch this! The white king and queen are in the wrong spot as are the bishop and knight on the right hand side… the black king and queen are flipped as well… besides that, he did a beautiful job on the board… I wish he would have made custom pieces for it as well… I made my dad a chess board from epoxy and jesmonite for Christmas… I made exotic chessmen for the board as I couldn’t bring myself to just put run of the mill store bought pieces on the board once I was finished with it… my dad is a diehard green bay packers fan so made the board in the colors of his team, green, yellow and ehite…. The pieces I made with the jesmonite and marbled in green epoxy for one side and yellow epoxy for the other side…. The board and pieces came out beautifully…. I did learn something when using jesmonite with epoxy though…. You can let your epoxy cure 100% before adding the jesmonite to it as a backing… the two sides separated from each other…. I poured the epoxy a second time, waited until it was still tacky and the. Poured over the jesmonite to cure into the epoxy… worked like a dream that second time around…. The board came out beautiful and my dad was a very happy man… he then promptly kicked my butt playing a game with me lol…
