Can you dive bomb on a harp?

This video is not sponsored, and the Digitech Whammy purchase was funded by my live-stream viewers! Thank you all so much; I love you all and am genuinely so grateful for all your support!! You make fun experiments like this possible. ♡

    It's really interesting to me how with the whammy pedal, the sliding note sounds a lot like slowing down a record on a turn table, but the actual dive bomb on a guitar does not. It makes sense in it's way, but I still find it very interesting.

  • @grunions9648

    @grunions9648

    I think that's mainly because she put the whammy at the end of the signal chain, so it's pitching down the distortion sound instead of just the pitch. Typically, you would always put pitch effects at the start of the signal chain (much like a tremolo affects the pitch prior to anything external)

    Harp is much more expensive and harder to carry around than other instruments like guitar or violin. This is an important factor that may deter beginners to start getting into harp in general. I dont think we going to get a ‘huge amount’ of new players in the next few years. However, it is no doubt that Emily is an essential key player that help to introduce the potential that harp can bring into modern music.

    @@emilyharpist I've got some ideas! Dunno if they're all practical, but they can be fun - easy key changes, with atmospheric slides between them - chord changes (keep the tonic the same but transpose the chord with the pedal - like if you're playing C major, and you want to go to A minor, play C minor and try to shift it down to A) - slide guitar! ...slide harp? - use a small interval and make subtle movements to get a kind of tape warble instability thing going on - play some blues with some sweet bends (including pre-bends) - play something, then play it an octave down but shift it back up an octave with the whammy, so it feels like you're doin nothin at all, nothin at all, nothin at all! Honestly I feel like it might be cool to have it set to a semitone or two, just so you can throw in "slides", bends and the like for single notes and full chords here and there. Lil bit of spicy seasoning that I don't think (?) you can usually do on a harp

    Cool video! Feel like I'm jumping in long after you started using pedals but man is it such a neat thing. Quick note, only with "floating" tremolos can you go up in pitch, myself and a lot of people just block it off for dive only to avoid tuning stability issues. I believe the "divebomb" mode is mimicking that.

    Pedal placement would help too. wah or whammy pedals generally go first in the signal chain then distortion and delay etc. You will find what works for your instrument, amp but its a good starting point. Amazing to hear with the avalanche run paired with it while seesaw back and forth with considerate timing. I loved that a lot and the dive bomb vocals hahaha you don’t need harp! Ya the harmonic pitch shifts would be guitar friendly unfortunately it doesn’t seem to shift up or track the harp well. Exploration is where the fun is and this was a lot of fun! Thanks to the live stream superchat supporters in getting the Whammy!

    Very cool stuff! I have a Whammy pedal (it's an older model, I've had it since the 1990s). I used to use it on Hammond organ: one fun trick with that is to do the palm-down gliss where you build up to a note from the bottom of the keyboard, but simultaneously use the "2 octave down" range so the sound starts off as little more than a venue-shaking rumble and rises even more rapidly :)

    Gonna have to disagree with you on one point - the detune sounds gorgeous on harp. And detune =/= chorus. (The possibilities with the harmony modes are intriguing, too - those came out a lot better than I expected.)

  • @emilyharpist

    @emilyharpist

    2 жыл бұрын

    The detune is essentially a vibrato mixed with the dry signal, which is essentially a chorus!!! I’d much prefer something like the Deep Oggin but it isn’t too bad!!! The harmony modes definitely have an application!! I just have to find where and how, haha probably quickly and subtly!!

    Love the experimentation whether it works or not! There were some great sounds and even if you didn't achieve the metal dive bomb that you were aiming for, I really liked the effects. While you are not a guitar god, I think with practice with the whammy pedal, you could put it to good use. Thanks for the great video!

    TBH, I loved what happened when she demoed the functions that “don’t work so well for harp.” I thought that was some cool way-out-there stuff.. Her expressiveness and musicality still translates when the key/pitch-shift stuff is happening, and the result is surprising and oddly beautiful. .This might be hyperbolic, but I feel like Miles Davis and Chick Corea would’ve really dug that. Keep experimenting, Emily, thanks for doin’ what you do! ✌🏼

    That's great that you could find a new Whammy! Digitech has been acquired by Cort, so I'm kind of hoping they'll re-issue some of the older pedals, including the DOD range. Considering when the Whammy came out (it's not a new pedal by any means!), I can kind of forgive them for the power supply thing. Also Whammy isn't an intelligent pitch shifter, just fixed intervals or bends. If you wanted to do this you'd need a harmonizer. I use the TC Electronic Quintessence, which also has programmable settings and a built-in expression function on the footswitch, so can kind of emulate some of the Whammy's sounds that way. Anyway I heard something new and cool today! Especially liked the shimmer with the reverb pedal, I thought that worked really well.

    Cool video as always! Two notes. The whammy actually does work on 9v/400mA power, or at least mine does :) And since you have two separate pickups on the harp you could also get a bass whammy and do dive bombs to the sub harmonics while dive bombing up on the regular whammy (or the other way around) :) My fav thing with the whammy is to use it in a send/return loop or a small mixer and so the harmonics are not overwhelming but stay on top of the main melody line by mixing in thw wham to taste. Also having a recorded loop playing thru the whammy this way i just love to flip to different harmonic presets (2nds, 3rds, octave up/down).

    It really depends on the Whammy version and power supply but the TrueTone CS12 works for all Whammy's. I've got my Whammy 5 running on my TrueTone CS12 on a single 500ma output. But...Whammy versions 1-4 require output 12 on that particular device because those require 9Vac. This is specifically called out in the CS12 manual.
