And videos like this help hobbyists like me to learn about audio gear and make more informed decisions. If it's possible, I would like to see a review of the Mackie Onyx USB interface (Onyx Artist or Onyx Producer). Nice vid! Watching this makes me think about my personal situation. I have a digital keyboard, specifically a Casio CT-X3000, my audio interface is Behringer UMC22. I connect them using a 2-mono to stereo TRS cable (but the keyboard has a 3.5mm port, I have the cable run through a TRS to 3.5mm converter before reaching the keyboard). I'm currently using the CT-X3000's speakers as the external speakers. The problem is that if I turn the vol. knob over the 12 o'clock position (maybe 12:30) the sound starts to clip, so I have to leave it there and turn up the keyboard's volume, that's when some hissing sounds appear. What cause this and is there anyway I can fix the problem? I'm delivering the words as good as I can. Thank you in advance!

    Thanks a lot for this video and others! I wanted to ask you a question and this seems like a good time to do so. I just bought a Yamaha DGX-670 Electronic piano ( big money for me). In some comparison videos I was a bit when it was mentioned that the headphone output is less desirable than a line-out on other keyboards. What do you think? From this video, I am not sure if those detractors are correct. That headphone-out goes to Edifier studio monitors that have a subwoofer-out which hosts my Yamaha subwoofer that came with the set, FYI. Cheers, and thanks again!

  • @PileOfEmptyTapes

    @PileOfEmptyTapes

    2 жыл бұрын

    Where the detractors are coming from is older keyboards like my very own PSR-E323, where the rather noisy speaker amplifier (a BA5417 set up for about 35.5 dB of gain) is doing double duty for the headphone out, restricting output dynamic range to about 86 dB at 2 Vrms out (or 80 dB at 1 Vrms out). That's plenty usable, especially if your input can actually take 2 Vrms / +8 dBu (or even the maximum output of 2.5 Vrms) and you're not listening excessively loud, but still quite a ways from the capabilities of the DACs they're using in these things (100+ dB). The older DGX-630 piano used a similar setup employing a LA4625 IC, which should be a bit less noisy and enable up to 92 dB at 2 Vrms. Now I was unable to find a service manual for your specific model which is very new, but did find one for the DGX-650B from 2013. This one actually uses a dedicated headphone amplifier IC (it has to because the speaker amplifier is a Class D job with BTL output, unsuited for headphone duties), a MAX9820. That guy is a whole lot better in the noise department, it's good for about 101 dB(A) at 1 Vrms out and will do 4-5 dB more if you insist, though I can't imagine high-frequency distortion is going to get any better. Together with the WM8524 DAC which can deliver 104 dB(A) at 2.1 V out, you can expect an output dynamic range of 96 dB(A) at 1 Vrms, perhaps even 97 dB(A) as DAC SNR = 106 dB(A) (i.e. its output noise level actually rises by 2 dB at full output vs. the analog noise level encountered at lower amplitudes). If your piano is at a similar level, I would consider its performance just fine. You can get legit CD quality recordings out of it. I would honestly be more worried about your Edifiers, as calling e.g. the popular R1280T set "studio monitors" would be a bit of a stretch (those are OK powered speakers for the price but they're not exactly Genelecs, or even JBLs or Kalis for that matter... look up the measurements).

  • @mgclark46

    @@PileOfEmptyTapes Thank you very much for the reply! I’ll try to digest the specs, but I hear you saying that I am probably not missing much by not having a Line-out. And I think you are saying that the Edifier are not great quality. I don’t think you are telling me that they will blow-up. That’s fine. The Edifiers have dual inputs and a Bluetooth input with a sub-out. This means I can share the subwoofer between the piano-in, PC-in, and anything Bluetooth, without moving cables around, which suits my needs. I call them studio monitors because the are marketed as near-field, and they might have been called studio monitors.

    sure. I did that as well before buying powered speakers. amps are usually quite expensive though so unless you already own a great pair of loudspeakers, getting powered ones with an inbuilt amp might even be cheaper. .ake sure to check the output level of your audio interface and the specifications of your speakers/amp (especially the power into resistance x-Ohm) so you don't end up overloading them and risk damaging your loudspeakers.

    5:15 interesting! Maybe this is a correlation to the speaker's impedance. If you flip this curve, you get two impedance peaks at 35 and 95 Hz, so bassreflex tuning would be in between at 55 Hz. Then there is a typical rise towards 2.5 kHz, and then falling again, which would mean that the the crossover to the tweeter could be somewhere in this region. • @PileOfEmptyTapes

    99% seems way exaggerated. It's mostly just the budget end of USB interfaces populated by the likes of Behringer and Presonus. They're generally running all the analog stages on +5V single-supply with an output that is just passively impedance-balanced, so anything much beyond 0 dBu is a stretch. Once you add an inverter for -5V and a proper balanced output driver, maximum levels go up quite dramatically - think Focusrite Scarlett (+15.5 dBu), MOTU M2/M4 etc. The Rode AI-1 is another such oddity, it has a super weak monitor out (-6 dBu max) even though the headphone out provides ample level indicating plenty high internal supplies. Bit of a head-scratcher, that one.

Bitte ,bitte antwort mir. Danke im voraus.

    But I have very small passive speakers. Surely high impendence headphones require more power than my tiny old creative pc speakers.

    No. Higher impedance just means you need more voltage and less current. Typical headphone sensitivity: ~95-100 dB SPL / 1 mW Typical small wideband speaker drivers: ~80 +/-5 dB SPL / 1 W / 1 m. (That's 50 dB SPL @ 1 m or 56 dB SPL @ 0.5 m for 1 mW of input.) Needless to say, headphone drivers benefit *A LOT* from being placed literally right next to your ear. They can _afford_ being higher impedance. Back in the late 1960s, Sennheiser designed their HD414 drivers with a 2 kOhm impedance so that their output would be roughly the same as that of a typical hi-fi speaker of the day (which would have been rather more efficient than modern ones as amplifier power still was relatively scarce, rarely more than 5-15 W).

    I hate that this is the truth. Every active monitor comes with an LED to let you know they’re on, and I record out of my bedroom. So, I can’t leave them on without being bothered at night. This may not be 100% of monitors, but, I can’t find any that I like without this feature. It’s pushing me towards buying Audioengine A2+ passives for my PC while also having studio monitors. 4 rectangular objects on my desk taking up too much space. I’m eventually going to have to wall mount them or something. I also wonder if anyone could recommend active monitors capable of longevity. I’ve been thru Mackie and Presonus entry models. Both defective. Mackie broke because of a faulty back switch and Presonus on/off circular switch fails to stay on sometimes… which is actually bad for my interface, because I have to flip it on and off a few times before they stay on. I don’t remember having this problem with any passive speaker sets until getting into the “pro audio” side of things… Literally used a cheap set of Creative speakers for over a decade without issue, and yet, professional equipment keeps breaking down on me. That said, I’ll pay for an upgrade from entry level next time, but I’m also kind of hesitant to do so now, per past experience. Anyone had almost daily use out of “pro audio monitors” for over 3 years flawlessly? Or are they just selling us shit with a pretty ribbon on it?
