Dear Mr. Hill (billy), Very detailed explanation, and great advice! The last option would be this: If you are not afraid of doing a long prison stretch for arson and insurance fraud, you may consider torching your RV and collecting the insurance money. If you are not arrested, you can cash your insurance check and buy a 50 amp trailer. If the cops show later, you can barricade yourself in your new 50 amp trailer and try to blast your way out. Try to aim for the cop cars engine blocks. This will buy you some time to escape. Your wife will be in the tow vehicle. Tell her to mash down on the gas pedal and start heading for Mexico. Good luck, and God's speed!

Thank you for a terrific video. I learned something new today👍 I'm became a subscriber! I agree with the simplicity of this approach. I have a coach with a 30amp service. It didn't come with a washer/dryer. Anytime we ran the electric water heater, AC, and washer/dryer the breaker would trip. So, I ran a dedicated 20amp cord, neatly hidden, from the washer/dryer to the electrical bay. When we need to run the washer/dryer along other items, we simply plug into the campground pedestal. Problem solved. I'm planning to install a second AC in our 30amp coach. The cheapest and the most practical path is to use a 15-20 amp electrical cord from the second AC to the pedestal. I was quoted $3500 to install a second AC in my coach. The company (no names) wanted to use the existing 30amp power distribution panel with a delayed start. They said, "staggering the start up would allow both 15k BTU AC's to run at the same time." Running two AC's with a 30amp power distribution panel is cutting it close with both AC's potentially drawing 13 amps each. Doesn't really give me a "buffer of amps " .

I just did exactly what you suggested to run a second A/C. I snaked a 12/2 wire through the ceiling and down the wall using a wire fish and under the sink where I put in a small 20 amp main lug box with a 20 amp breaker. Then put a 20 amp power inlet on the outside trailer wall. Works like a champ. I agree with you, this is the best option.

When I added a second A/C unit, I changed out the 30amp cord and inlet for 50 amp($115) I used a single DIN 20amp breaker and box ($20 total) mounted next to the junction box of the generator and shore power. I ran 1 leg of the 50amp to the existing 30 amp panel . I then ran second leg of the 50amp through the Din breaker and connected to the second A/C 12G wiring. Pretty simple and just a few hours of work.

I'm an old electrician, and I had no idea that all the circuits in an RV are 120v. I even just assumed that the 30A was 240v. So, here I learned a lot about RVs here. Good thing, too, because I just bought a travel trailer with a 30A 120v service. I was also planning on upgrading it to a 50A service. I've got some thinking to do!

We have an older Class A motor home (2000 model) that’s on a 30 amp system. It’s a great coach with very little problems and we do all the normal maintenance. The rv has 2 a/c from the factory and we are really careful with how we run both systems. But, the past 18 months we have run into some electrical issues. I have a mobile rv tech that I use routinely if it’s a problem that I can not do myself. This is the exact conversation that we have been discussing the past year of upgrading our coach to a 50 amp system.

Great video. I have for the last few years been contemplating this idea. No need for an extra a/c just a little more power for the kitchen. Last season our shore cord melted due to a bad connection. I'm going to update our unit to a detachable unit now. I purchased a 20amp 110 cord inlet to add to our unit and run a dedicated line to our kitchen sink area for extra power to run our air fryer etc. The issue I'm dealing with is trying to fish the new line through the belly with minimal damage to everything. It really bugs me opening it up under there and then getting it sealed back up properly to take the wind abuse of driving down the road. Like you said. This thing isn't like a house. There is no good way to get from point A to B. I wouldn't even attempt to fish through an wall. I think my best plan is to use a piece of pex line and fish through it to where I'm trying to go That way the hole in the belly will be minimal. Anyhow, thanks for your input.

It is going to be a bit more involved than that, but it is doable. It would seem to me that it would be a lot easier to buy a 50 to 30 amp adapter. They make them both ways 50-30 and 30-50.

Thanks for sharing this information. We have thought about this same thing. Our issue with 30amp is more like the scene in Apollo 13 when they are trying to find the power up sequence to stay under amperage 😅. Usually it's when we have the AC running and we are also making dinner so we have the instant pot and air fryer going. Then someone turns on the microwave and everything shuts down. We ultimately decided it's just not worth the effort and we just manage the load.

This has been a known issue for years, because of cost the manufacturers won’t put 50 amps in smaller campers. The manufacturers put all these receptacles along the kitchen wall and you can have a toaster and coffeemaker going at the same time without tripping the breaker. I’m thinking of running a separate cable from the 50 amp plug to a heavy duty power strip to run all my appliances.

Your video is spot on! Buy a new one instead.

Still not cheap but the easiest way to go for a novice. This way you can safely run a generator or plug into the 30 amp service at campgrounds.

The problem I have usually seen with 30amp units is when someone tries to run the AC, microwave, stove, etc at the same time it will trip because the pull is too much at once. So they need to turn off the AC when they want to use another appliance. Wouldnt you be able to add a 50amp panel and put the AC unit on one 120v circuit by itself and then put everything else on the other 120v circuit. No need to run any wires.

One thing commonly left out of these discussions is that when a 30 amp connection goes to a 30 amp pedestal outlet, that single 110 hot is on a 30 amp breaker. When they use a 30 to 50 converter plug and pull that single 110 off the 50 amp plug, each 110 leg is on a 25 amp breaker, a net loss of 5 amps versus using a 30 amp plug on the pedestal.

I see ductless mini split units for homes that have no ducts that can do this as they are heatpump units... so then maybe a heat pump unit mounts in front and back of RV may be the best solution in a DIY RV maybe mount the fan unit on the rear hitch? :)

Here is my situation currently. So looking for your recommendation, if any. My wife and i are basically forced to give up our home. That is fine with us. We have a 32 ft. 1995 camper that is 30 amp. We are moving into it. Converter was bad. New one coming Monday so i can fix that problem. Just wasn't running my DC side. We will be living in it permanently on a site which was a really old mobile home park that is being converted to a small rv community. My concern is not a/c. It is heating. We plan on heating with electric heaters as the propane furnace would be way too expensive. Insulating and skirting is basically free for us because i work for a Styrofoam factory and get all the cutoffs i want. So, yes, we will be insulating it incredibly well. I know it will take 2 space heaters to keep it warm plus some other heating items to keep things under thawed out. Lights, etc. We only have a single 30 amp receptacle at the pole but there is a place for adding one breaker. We do plan on adding a 15 or 20 amp breaker to that. Don't worry, i will be using minimum 12 guage for that connection. That will probably give me just enough to run the 2nd space heater and maybe a strategically place light or 2. I also know we will still have to be careful as to what we power and when. We also have our big buddy heater should it absolutely be needed for short term added heat for extremely cold nights. The though has crossed my mind about converting to 50 amp because i have plenty of space for the box and my wife and i could care less about hiding everything in the walls. Ive hid wiring fairly nicely in mobile homes in plain site. Do you think this would be feasible for someoe like me to do as we would like to also replace propane hot water tank to say a 20 gallon single element electric tank later. Only thing left on propane would be for cooking which is fine for us. The possibility of a full size fridge is also an idea we wouldnt mind adding. Any input or idea would be greatly appreciated. Upgrading to a different rv at this time is not an option for us. Also, i have yet to find a single breaker in our camper. Any chance it doesn't have one?

Makes no sense, but it's at the complete opposite end and corner of the camper. Buried below a bottom shelf in a cabinet. There was plenty or room where all the other power things are.

I have insurance but none of the RV service dealers want to repair it or even give me a estimate for the insurance company. They all say I need to take it to a body shop for the repair. But most body shops are not big enough to work on a fifth wheel camper. I have no problem having the camper towed to a shop for repairs this fall, but right now all I need is the estimate to send to the insurance to get the ball rolling. I have a question for you , I have a suburban heater in my 2007 keystone. It won’t ignite , I have replaced the computer board , and the sig switch and limit switch have power, and a new igniter. I put all the new components in and it wouldn’t lite, it appeared it was a gas problem. I tore the regulator and diaphragm apart and found debrie in the regulator cleaned out put back together and it then worked. Went out yesterday to turn it on and back to it clicking no ignite. I sad you replaced a complete regulator. Do you think I am in that boat? Thanks Dale from Ohio.

If your gas pressure in the RV is 11-14 WCI after the regulator, then that ain't the problem. Or are you talking about the gas valve in the furnace?

  • @dalegaus276

@@hillbillyrv the gas doesn’t seem to be getting to the burner. Gas is coming into the regulator but doesn’t seem to be coming out to the burner. I took the regulator apart there’s 2 electronic coils that are on the exit side of the regulator. I pulled those apart and cleaned the chambers and found rust particles in it . Reassembled and it worked went out next day and it won’t ignite again. So I am wondering if it’s those coils or the diaphragm on the regulator. I have no way to check gas pressure on the side of burner.

I have 30amp service in my RV and I cant make a cup of coffee, and run the AC at the same time. If the AC kicks on then I get an over amp spike and the whole thing goes dead until I reset. Its so annoying. Why campers are so underpowered I will never understand. I really dont think you should have to shut the AC off to make a cup of coffee or take a hot shower. Last camper I had was 50 amp and I ran two ACs, hot water, microwave, and a coffee pot while watching TV, it never had any issues.

@@hillbillyrv Thanks for the reply, it sent me on a fact finding mission and I do believe I found the culprit. I purchased a 30 Amp Hughes Autoformer Power Watchdog Bluetooth Portable Surge Protector when I got the camper, and from several reviews I read it has a tendancy to trip unnecessarily if you hit that magical 30 amp mark for even a second or two.

If the breakers feeding the a/c are still 20 amp, with the appropriate 12/2 wire, why would the wire have to be replaced if i upgrade to a 50 amp panel?

  • @hillbillyrv

    @hillbillyrv

Almost everyone considering this upgrade would do it to add a second AC which in a 30 amp camper is not going to be prewired for 2nd AC, then you would have to run new wire to that. Make sense now?

I’ve heard other people say you’re supposed to replace a bunch of wiring when upgrading to 50 amp, which never made sense to me. That’s what i thought you were talking about. Glad that was clarified, obviously you’d have to run wire to the second a/c. Just finished up my conversion today, was pretty straight forward i thought. Definitely need to know what you’re doing though. Maybe i got lucky but running the wire was the easy part.

OK, so don't let this guy scare you. If your intent is to add an air conditioner to say your bedroom in a 30 amp travel trailer. Regardless of what you do, you are going to have to run some wires in the wall unless you want to have an extension cord coming off of the roof of your trailer or have an extension cord hanging in the room where you've added the AC. Now. If you are at the point where you are considering adding an a c, it's see if you need to be told that it's gonna be a little difficult to run the wires. You shouldn't be considering adding an AC. You should go pay someone to do it or trade in your trailer. 41 that has two a c unit It's that simple, either you're confident enough in your skills to be able to pull this off. Or you shouldn't even attempt it. And just trade your trailer in and get a trailer. Because if you screw this up, it's going to end badly.

Not expensive to get 50 amp service. Second AC only went to second breaker on Gen. so when plugger in, only way to run both AC, would need to run Gen.... So if you get a 2 breaker panel put a 30 amp one side to feed existing Power Center, 20 amp to feed second AC. Buy a 50 AMP ext cord and cut female end off and feed it to your 2 breaker pannnel. Bum under $ 200-300 and you upgraded....
