Can you complete Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal, with only Grunts?

Ойын-сауық

Now that we've done Tides, its time to venture beyond, in to the land of tough levels and broken AI. See for yourself how I accidentally completely break the game multiple times, and discover whether its enough to beat this titan of a campaign.
Huge shout out to MFromAzeroth for helping me figure out what was going on with some of these levels! His channel's here, and he has some really cool videos on it!
/ @kopfschmerztv
I'm definitely leaning towards doing a follow up video to see if I can beat this campaign without saves, but it will probably be a while before I get there. Hope you enjoyed!

Haha yeah :) I don't actually know all that much about Touhou, I just really enjoy the music! I was also honestly a bit lazy with the music this time. In a couple of videos I've targeted specific music for specific parts, but in this one I just grabbed a video of someone's 15 best touhou boss themes and stuck in in there with very minor editing.

All right, thanks for the input! Also, yes. That's something I learned as well while playing this challenge. Aggressive plays early just gives you access to so much more gold in this campaign, which is the key to beating a lot of these levels. This will definitely prove to be the case in Footmen Only Beyond.

Thank you! I hope you enjoy! Warcraft 2 is fun, but its also a product of its time. Compared to games like Warcraft 3 and Starcraft 2, and even Starcraft, it is incredibly unrefined, with massive pathfinding and UI issues, and AI that occasionally breaks. The mission design is also relatively basic, and the races are essentially mirror images of each other with different graphics. Essentially, the game just doesn't hold up super well compared to what came after it. However, despite its flaws, there's just something about it that I find really fun, so I still enjoy coming back to it occasionally. The voice lines and music are great, the campaign narrator is simple but effective and very cool, units are easy to identify and distinguish from one another (its a good example of why stylization is more important than detail) and the game is pretty fast paced, which keeps it engaging for me. Units may move everywhere except for where you want them to go, but at least they get there quickly! Its definitely an experimental piece of rts history that paved the way for Starcraft to take what worked here and build on it. Hope you enjoy it!

Idk, I tried once years back, very difficult to mass the footmen/grunts on various levels. The last orc level would be insane, or orc 9 when the humans get invisibility. There’s a reason spearmen/archers op in that one. I could try again tho.. I think you could reasonably get to the 8th levels of each campaign, after that you face annoying wizard tactics with catapults mixed with knights. A baseless level and then 11 and 12 fighting demons or water elementals which will kill all your footmen/grunts while still dealing with knights/Raiders and the still the annoying magic attacks.

For this challenge at least, I decided not to use the patch mfromazeroth linked me because I feel like I want to play an unmodded version of the game for now, but it is super cool that you fixed the glitches. Instead, I'm redoing my footman beyond run, but not allowing myself to save in levels to avoid using the reset glitch. Basically, when I was looking at my footage, I realized I took advantage of this glitch on most of the levels, and the script felt boring as a result. You can actually beat Alterac 19:54 using only grunts and peons (No starting units.). You have enough money to build 1 barracks, 1 grunt (And still have enough for a hall). I was able to get 3 peons past the teal units by sacrificing the grunt and 1 of the peons. Once past building up as normal gets you the win. I personally killed my starting units instead of throwing them at the enemy (Except the dragons, I had to throw them at red towers to kill em off)

Its really hard, and I was only able to get past the spiral defenses by slowing the game speed down a few ticks and moving units up through the single tile on the right side. I couldn't kill purple before they ran out of gold so I didn't have as much units to throw at the defenses.

I've actually found that it sometimes pays off to mix grunts an ogres for two reasons: * They can draw aggro away from the ogres (and bloodlusted they do quite similar amounts of damage). * They cost less and build faster, so you can attack/retaliate faster. So on some maps they pay off, as WC2 isn't always generous with resources. Especially true if wood is low, but I can't remember if that's ever a factor. EtA: Single player.

  • @redwings13400

Actually, I kinda agree with you. I think defending against the AI with grunts or footmen with tower support can actually be easier than defending with knights/ogres sometimes, simply because their slower speed actually works for them. Ogres are way better at attacking, but have a tendency to leave their defensive positions faster than grunts do, and then get hit more often as a result. Part of what allowed me to beat this campaign in the first place was realizing that I don't need to tech up to ogres to get an army, and that having a few grunts early for defense actually helps me stabilize a lot in the early game.

The mission at 8 minutes only require you to touch green base anyways. Anyways this game is quite weird and I believe the glitches are also linked to where you build your main base. That's true. I generally like to destroy every enemy if I'm able to though. Also, you probably encountered either the save glitch or a pathfinding error. The pathfinding in this game is seriously awful, and the ai does not know how to get past obstacles like walls, so the ai can get their units stuck very easily if you build in the right places.

Well, Warcraft 2 AI strikes again. Can't say I'm particularly surprised The recording fails were a little fun to have included I won't lie I did notice that the walls were all over the place. Knowing they're neutral passive makes it even harder to go through. And cannon towers don't aggro units? Yeah, sure, might as well The chaos for claiming the expansion gold mine was really interesting. I'm not used to the AI prioritizing expanding this much. Usually, there's one expansion at most it goes for, so it's really something to witness that here At this point, I'm tempted to make a game out of every time the AI breaks here. I wonder how many more times it'll break in the Human Campaign I figured this one would be harder than Tides of Darkness, but I can't say I was expecting it to be this much harder. This was very interesting to see, especially considering how much I don't know about Warcraft 2. Although, with all the AI breaks, I can't imagine this was an accurate representation of the difficulty of the campaign. Very interesting to see The ending sums it up perfectly. In a world where humans forgot themselves and relied on magic and knights, they fall to the heart of the Horde. The Grunts. However, should the Horde forget its roots, and the humans remember their hearts, they will prevail

hehe. Yeah, the AI will often aggressively expand in Warcraft 2, and making sure to aggressively block off AI expansions before they can do it is often the key to beating levels in these campaigns. Its an interesting dynamic that's very different from any other Bliz RTS campaign I've played, and it can create some pretty fun scenarios! I'm definitely considering an eventual follow up video for this one because of how often the AI broke. After looking at the footage of my human beyond campaign, I also decided to literally replay the run while banning the save glitch, just because of how often I accidentally used it there. Still, just because I banned the save glitch doesn't mean the AI won't break... This game always seems to find a way lol. Thanks for watching! :D

Also, I actually expected the difference in challenge to be significantly greater than it actually was heading in to Beyond. In a normal playthrough, its hard to overstate how easy Tides actually is compared to Beyond. The last human level in Tides (aka dragon spam simulator) is legitimately really tough, and there are a couple levels that might surprise a player early if they don't prioritize their defenses (last orc level, second to last human level), but aside from that, the Tides campaigns are honestly pretty trivial when played normally (IMO casual to normal SC2 difficulty). However, there are a few sections in the Tides campaigns that really surprised me. Naval landings became so much harder without battleships, and the orc siege of dalaran was absolutely horrifying without the ability to use something like catapults or death knights to destroy towers at a range. These levels went from relatively trivial to absurd with the restriction. However, in Beyond... The restriction didn't seem to change nearly as much about how hard the levels were! There were a lot of problems I had to solve, but Beyond had some structural advantages that actually made playing grunts/footmen only a much more 'viable' strategy than in the base game. You get A LOT of gold in Beyond, and the difficulty in this campaign is often frontloaded, with surviving early being the most difficult part of a lot of levels. Grunts/Footmen and towers are actually a very good defensive composition that's pretty resource efficient. There aren't as many naval levels in beyond and some of them can be cheesed a bit. Attacking bases still sucks, but you can get so much gold to do it that there's usually just enough to overwhelm the enemy if you secure enough gold in the early game. A lot of my cheese strategies in Beyond also still worked with just footmen, flying machines, and towers. So, while Beyond is FAR more difficult than Tides in general, this challenge actually increased the challenge of Tides far more than it increased the challenge of Beyond, leading to the difficulty increase being far less than I anticipated going in! Its a really interesting effect, and its not something I expected at all! That said, I imagine if I banned the save glitch in the orc campaign, that could cause me some real issues. Death knights can be cheesed with flying machines, but mages can't, and there are a few terrifying levels that I save glitched the heck out of in this run. So maybe Orc Beyond will prove to be harder if I do a follow up.

@@redwings13400 Very interesting. The only real experience I have with completing Warcraft 2 is playing a Warcraft 3 custom campaign recreating it in the Warcraft 3 engine, so I didn't know how different it would be with this restriction going in. With everything you've shown, I might just go back and give base Warcraft 2 another try So what I'm getting is that while Beyond is still harder than Tides, the difficulty spike for Tides was higher than the one for Beyond with the restriction in play. That's very interesting. I remember a problem in Warcraft 3 was the lack of resources, so I see how having a lot of gold can help out in general, even if the game is still very tough Banning the save glitch... yeah, I can see how that'd make things a lot tougher in general. Should be interesting if you decide to do it

As an experiment, keep in the game audio at a low level with midi music off. Then play the midi soundtracks on their own so they don't get interrupted by cutting the game footage. Your mic quality is good and you sound fine, so the music you added wasn't really necessary to fill air. Most of these videos are designed to lure/trigger nostalgia, so keeping the soundtrack in would be best practice.

I'm a little confused here, how exactly would I do that? I don't know very much about audio editing in general, and I'm not really sure what you mean by midi music or midi soundtracks, or how I'd separate game audio from the game soundtrack (assuming that's what you're suggesting). As for the nostalgia portion, in every other warcraft 2 video I did, I used the WC2 soundtrack in the background, but I got a bit bored of that and changed it up for fun here. It was just boring for me to use the same music multiple videos in a row, especially when I used the WC2 soundtrack for some WC3 videos too. Still, I do feel like music and audio in general is something I just don't know much about, and I'm trying to play it by ear to figure out the best way to make it work, so any advice here is appreciated!

I called it 'MIDI" because that's what the old DOS music format was. That's what everybody doe: Giant Grant, Spirit of the Law, etc. It really drips the dopamine. IMO my best video on the channel has about 250 views right now, while this one has gotten way more views than my last few despite the production value being about the same. Not gonna lie, in the Nethergarde Keep mission in the Orc Campaign, the hardest part for me was always just... keeping Teron Gorefiend alive. Once Blue has Paladins with Exorcism up, they will start charging him from across the map to nuke him with Exorcism _constantly._ I literally setup a massive maze of guard towers to protect him and those f***ers would run that goddamn gauntlet with a bloody single-minded purpose, and despite the size of that goddamn maze, Teron STILL took a few hits. It's why I hate Teron Gorefiend so much. He is worse than dead weight, he is an active liability in any mission where he must survive. And this is me speaking as someone who actively loves to use hero units as much as possible. And the fact that he got ignored for you all mission long makes me hate with you with an undying fiery jealous passion.

It turns out that's just the way to beat the mission, the enemy just... doesn't attack him when he's in the start area. I've definitely lost this mission many times because of Teron getting exorcised before. He absolutely is a net negative on this mission (and in most of the campaign) even when playing normally, he provides a loss condition while paladin spam prevents him from doing much of anything after you get a base, lol. This one wasn't the save glitch btw. I did this on trolls only too without the save glitch (and I don't think I used the glitch on this level to begin with) and it worked there too.

Maybe put the fights and lead up to the fights on like 1.5x speed instead of the straight time skip? That way we have a reference of what, when, where and how.

Thanks. Yeah, I agree. I was already editing the video when I realized what happened, so I decided to just finish up this video and highlight the glitch as part of it. Its at least a very interesting glitch, if a really annoying one. However, I came to pretty much the same conclusion as you did when I watched footage of my beyond footmen run. The script felt boring as I was basically repeating, "and then the AI might have glitched out when I reloaded, so I won." So, I decided to do a completely new playthrough for that one where I banned saving the game. I actually just finished that run a couple minutes ago, so next time, that annoying glitch won't be there anymore! I'm glad I did this, because I think the new run is going to be a lot more interesting as a result!

Nice, that's honestly pretty impressive. :) I still stand by my statement that this campaign is essentially hard WC3 or brutal SC2, and probably slightly harder than those campaigns on average. I think all of these campaigns are doable with practice regardless of your skill level (I don't think I'm that good at RTS), but I'd probably still rate the final orc level in this campaign as maybe the fourth hardest level bliz has ever released? I think my top 5 hardest levels would be... 1) All In Air Brutal (SC2 WOL) 2) A Symphony of Frost and Flame Hard (Frozen Throne Scourge) 3) Salvation Brutal (SC2 LOTV) 4) The Dark Portal (WC2 Beyond) 5) Honestly not sure, these are a clear top 4 for me though. Maybe Eye of Dalaran (WC2 Beyond)? (also, this all assumes fastest game speed. Without fastest game speed WC2 is much easier)

6:45 i prefer slow, but i am old...then again the game is too, so.... i won't be the only old person here. but that's not the worst. the worst is at 3:54 wher you show some text. i do no expect a text, the text has 15/16 words and i have about 1 second minus reaction time to read it. and you are far from the only person to do this. but why? is there something in the algorithm that rewards videos, that get rewinded or paused? hope so, would be a shame if this suffering was for nothing... ;-)

  • @redwings13400

    @redwings13400

    7 ай бұрын

Thanks for the feedback! For the text, I know I sometimes show it super quickly, and I’ve wondered about people’s experience with that. When I watch videos, I often enjoy videos with little Easter eggs here and there that require pausing to see, so I think I’ve incorporated that in to my editing style, basically viewing the text as clarifying information or little extra jokes that doesn’t necessarily need to be read for the main point to be made, but is still there for people to see if they want to. Like, my text is essentially stuff that I want to say but also feel like it would lengthen the video too much if I said it out loud. Also, it’s a byproduct of how I write my scripts, as I write and record my scripts before starting any editing, so there’s usually only a small amount of time it makes sense to add my clarifications. That said, I imagine that can also be annoying if you try to read it in real time. I definitely don’t expect people to do it, and I imagine it’s a bit frustrating in situations where it’s hard to pause the video, or if you just prefer the video without pausing. The time stamp you gave is a bit of a weird example admittedly because that’s actually footage from someone else’s video, but I know I do this a lot when I add text. I’m basically trying to balance adding additional clarifying information while simultaneously not slowing down the pace of the video, and it’s a tough balance to figure out. As for the algorithm, I have no idea. I try not to edit my videos around what the algorithm wants (i will never ask you to subscribe, for instance), so I have no idea on that front.

haha yeah. I normally state my rules early on in my challenges, but I haven't for the last couple videos for some reason. Essentially, I'm allowing myself grunts, peons, all structures including towers, goblin zepplins, oil tankers, and transports. I'm trying to use my starting units as little as possible, but I didn't give myself set rules for that for this one, and was kinda playing it by ear to figure out what was doable with that. Of these, the only thing you could cut out and still beat these campaigns with would be goblin zepplins. They aren't strictly necessary, but its really annoying to scout the map without them, and I just don't like not knowing the terrain of the map. I think everything else is pretty required. Obviously you'd be stuck on naval levels without transports and oil tankers, peons are obviously required to build a base and get gold, and towers are necessary to get rid of dragons and ships. I think towers are also necessary in the early game in a lot of levels, because otherwise the attack waves would just kill you before you''re able to build up, especially when you aren't using your starting army to defend.
