    For Phoebe: her lead Dusclops *does* always use Protect until the first turn you use a move. Key word, until. If you open the bag and use a useless item, like a pokeball 10 times, you can burn all protect PP as she will use it over and over until you attack. Idk how this is coded but back when I completed the Pokedex in Emerald and grinded everything on the E4 there were a couple times when her Dusclops didn't use Protect on the first turn. Same with Drake's Shelgon which supposedly has the same behavior. It must've been like a 1 in 100 chance or smth but it can happen

    Cool little mechanic: at 34:21, Vigoroth gets taken out by toxic damage, and since it dies to a passive effect, the game reads that as Slaking’s first turn in battle, so its first ACTIONABLE turn is being read as its second, which is why it looks like it’s loafing around on its first turn

  • @CazTheGamerGuy

    Just a heads up as someone who did a Feebas Diamond/Pearl solo run since you mentioned you're doing one near the end for Platinum: As someone who did that same thing years ago, it's almost a necessity to use an egg move (Dragonbreath) because of the changes made to Struggle during Gen 3 -> Gen 4 that make it damn near impossible to use a Feebas that only hatches with Splash; the Feebas with an Egg move was my second attempt. Instead of dealing recoil damage based on how much damage you dealt, you simply lose ¼ of your health every time you use it. I’m guessing they did this because of Wobuffet - two Wobuffet locked into battle with Leftovers was a huge problem in competitive Pokemon in generation 3 but I digress. Since it’s your only means of damage for Feebas until Level 15, it becomes a major problem, especially given how frail a level 1 Pokémon is, let alone one with such awful stats. And since I wasn't using not using items in battle, not even against wild Pokémon, this makes it considerably more daunting than it would have been compared to any of the past generations. In the first two routes, there’s only one Pokémon that you can burn Splash PP against without risking being knocked out against, Kricketot, who has Bide and Growl. Kricketot can only be found at night which isn’t that big an issue since you can just change the clock. The bigger issue is that it learns Bide which is pretty hard to avoid. While you can try to flee, since Feebas is only level 1 and the chances of fleeing Kriketot or any other Pokemon are based on speed, it’s unlikely that will succeed and this is even further compounded by the lack of resources one has at the start of the game, let alone how few one will have going forward. It’s all a matter as to whether they use Bide before getting KO’d/before Growl lowers your attack to the point where you're dealing less than 1/4. And while you can always try to run until you succeed and face a Bidoof or Starly, it’s not like the other local Pokémon will be much easier to beat even if you do have Struggle and full HP. Both of them possess the move Growl which will lower Feebas’ already meager attack even further.

  • @Eroil

    @Eroil

    10 ай бұрын

    Good tip! But why start with a level 1 Feebas? Traditionally the Pokemon that you get always starts at level 5

  • @CazTheGamerGuy

    @CazTheGamerGuy

    10 ай бұрын

    @@Eroil Well for one i'm assuming JRose is acquiring his Feebas the same way I did/the same way he did in Emerald which is via an Egg he bred and in Gen 4, eggs start out at level 1, not 5. For another, Feebas still doesn't learn any moves until level 15 which because it's part of the erratic egg group means getting the EXP for that is excruciating. It's worse in Platinum than Diamond/Pearl because the latter actually gives you access to Hidden Power fairly early so you could conceivably make a rush for it and hope you get lucky with an HP that will help you out at one of the points you'll get stuck (the first Purugly/Team Galactic boss, the Grass gym which has the benefit of a good grinding spot due to Cheryl healing you after every encounter, etc.) before you get access to Surf or Blizzard. There's also Abomasnow at the Ice gym who took an absurd amount of time to beat but that's way later in the game when you have more tools to approach that battle.

  • @Eroil

    @@CazTheGamerGuy afaik usually he uses a cheat engine to replace one of the starters to Feebas, this is what he does in most of his videos. It might still be a wise decision but I'm pretty sure for Jrose it's usually as long as it's possible he would not use anything but the standard (which wouldn't be an egg move mon)

  • @nolongeraperson

    @nolongeraperson

    8 ай бұрын

    @@Eroil He never uses cheat engine unless it's a modded run using an emulator. 99% of the time he is using an actual cartridge, a gameshark or action replay to hack in the mon, or trading an egg in, and playing on a Retron5 for the speed up mode.

    Might be buried by now but there is a good way of levelling up your Pokémon in the day centre. If you choose the Acro bike and then head to the mud slide thing above the desert (normally you need the Mach bike to go up it) you can just keep something pressed against the "Up" button/key and you will repeatedly move. You can leave this going overnight or whatever and will max out your level no problem.

    I feel like Encore could've been used a lot more in the early game, especially with moves like Rock Tomb and Constrict to lower speed. Continually locking Makuhita into Bulk Up instead of just once, locking Manectric into Howl to prevent damage and locking Numel into Sunny Day to lower chip damage are just some of the strategies I think could've been used to make things easier. It probably would've taken even LONGER so I understand why it wasn't used that often but I still feel it could've helped out a lot more.

    Ok, so you said in the opening this would be significantly harder due to a lack of roll out, but iirc, in emerald specifically, there's a guy in Mauvaile who will teach it to one pokemon. Will edit if you bring this up.

    Jrose: *spends 30 minutes of the video absolutely suffering through the elite four, only to get stonewalled at the champion* Also Jrose: *absolutely CRANKS those same elite four members in like 1 try each by finally using rollout/substitute, like he probably should have been the entire time*

    My hair started falling out. "You're tank shuckle! Use it's OG wrecking ball set!" But I guess he's a masochist because he could have just used Rest over Leftovers as well. Would have been even better than Safeguard against Tentacruel.

    Isn’t TM44 Rest available in Lilycove? Seems like an obvious choice for a Toxic-stall strategy. Sleep Talk and Substitute are options available via Move Tutor as well. 🤔🤔 I mean, mad props for grinding for Leftovers instead, but Rest seems like a slam dunk even in combination with Leftovers. Edit: Ah, I see; “I thought I might ultimately regret deleting a move” strikes again. Edit 2: Gee, if only there were a way to heal poison or prevent it with a move, then that Tentacruel might not be so dangerous. 😅 Edit 3: Ah, he’s finally discovered Substitute. 😂 Edit 4: NO STEVEN FIGHT?! 😢 I was so curious/sadistic about seeing whether you’d need to pivot off of Toxic entirely in order to get a moveset that can deal with his Toxic-immune Steel types.

    At the end of the video, did we just get a teaser about Feebas in Pokemon Platinum? That's REALLY interesting. Looking forward to that. Anyway, amazing video even though this run HAD to be brutal for Shuckle. Once again, you did it with Shuckle though it was hardly the curbstomp that this was in Crystal. Also can't believe how long this vid was, lol. But yeah, was nice to see some variety on a Pokemon NOT known for variety in strategy. Would Defense Curl have even worked in this game, assuming Shuckle could even get it? That's what I'd like to know.
