Can You Beat Final Fantasy 9 With Only Trance?

Ойындар

#CanYouBeat #FinalFantasy #FinalFantasy9
This is a Trance Only challenge for Final Fantasy 9. The only damage we can deal to any enemy is damage caused solely by each character's specific, and unique Trance ability/buff. The point behind this challenge is that this almost forces you to endure every enemies' onslaught if you intend to beat them.
I am very sure that I will pronounce something wrong in this video, or maybe I will have not quite used the most optimal strategy in certain places, but I am very proud of the end result, and it was a labour of 2 and half months of continous work. I hope you enjoy :D

Funnily enough, Ozma's Meteor actually just does random damage. It can do as little as 110 damage and as much as 9999. In theory, you could be lucky and just get hit for barely anything every time it uses Meteor.

One little specification on Ozma: The devs let him have one status weakness, Slow, as a joke. He actually has his own special passive ability I like to call "Nuh uh I go first" where any time you issue an order his ATB bar fills instantly, he picks his move, and executes it BEFORE the order you issued. So the only 'safe' time to issue orders is during the animation of one of his abilities, otherwise he will get his turn in-between all your characters' turns.

*TRANCE REVAMP IDEA* My understanding is that the reason you can't conserve Trance is because it comes from an intense burst of emotions - so it wouldn't make sense, in-story, for a character to stay actively raged up between/after battles. But that also makes it kind of a bad mechanic because the player loses their agency over it and runs into situations where someone Trances right at the end of battle and can barely use it if at all. Here's my suggestion: Using non-Trance attacks doesn't lower your gauge. Only physically attacking (because that's stronger for everybody) and using your special Trance abilities does. If you finish a battle while in Trance, you lose the Trance status, but the Trance gauge remains where it is instead of automatically dropping to zero. So if you've attacked once during Trance and you have 60% of your gauge left, you start the next battle with 60% of your gauge - but without actually being in Trance. You have to get attacked again for that to happen. Additionally, if you Trance right at the end of battle, or otherwise don't deplete any of your Trance gauge, you lose the Trance status *BUT* start the next battle with your Trance gauge at 254 out of 255. So, no matter what, you get right back into Trance after the first attack lodged at you. I think this solves most of the issues that Trance has while remaining reasonable and faithful to its narrative purpose.

I find it interesting that each Trance mode has a unique form that people go into. Like with Steiner getting more armor, or Vivi's hat straightening. Although, it IS interesting that out of all of them, Zidane and Kujo are the only ones who's forms retain a pinkish hue, while the others are primarily green.

@@mistahjenkins4826 Don't most of the characters become purplish from Trance? Freya, Quina, Vivi, Steiner, and even Eiko and Dagger - they all become this combination of off-white and lavender, with parts that are dark blue/purple or light green (Freya/Steiner's armor, Vivi/Quina's faces). Amarant is just a darker shade than most of them, but his base colors are about the same. (There is the question of WHY he's darker in Trance, to which I have two answers, with an "and/or" between them: One is that it's because his Trance form is mostly naked, whereas the lighter Trance colors are usually reserved for clothes/armor. The other answer I have is that maybe it's because he's [kind of?] Black-coded, what with having dreadlocks and resembling the "thug criminal" stereotype - which does come with its own unfortunate questions...)

So I wanted to commit to an end-game team early. Dagger not having Trance at all in the Desert Palace was putting me off her from the start. Plus I wanted that higher HP for survival (and to withstand hits for Trance build up). Dagger may very well have been the more practical choice overall, but I didn't want to grind any more than I had to (learning Auto Life for two characters in this run took long enough!)

I love returning to this video every now and then and playing it in the background while i work. You have such a great way of making these limiting challenges very engaging. also a great way to relive the game without completely spoiling the gameplay. Hope you make more ffix challenges!

Absolutely fantastic run, well worth the wait. FF9 is my favourite game of all time, so I was thrilled to see this alert pop up. Couldn't click fast enough! And perfectly timed, too, to watch before bed. :) Enjoyed this tremendously, thank you.

I don't know what to say! I'll start by saying that FF9 may be my favourite game too (Top 5 at least). I'm glad you enjoyed it, and that it wasn't too long. Thanks a lot :D

Damn dude, I play this game when I was 10 and just looking your video for an hour you gave me a reason to come back to this game. PSD: I hope your channel gets the merit it deserves this type of videos gets a really long time to make, keep going with your hard work and I actually like the way you narrow your playthrough.

Lovely video! I love FF9 so much but still learned a lot from you. I didn’t know Spirit on FF9 was linked to Trance (figured it was like Spirit in the prior games, linked to magic defence) and didn’t know Black Waltz 3 attacked himself in the 2nd encounter if only Garnet is alive - interesting. Even watching a video like this gives me an urge to play 9 again lol. Such lovely designs, maps and music (oh the music 😍). I’m a new sub now. Great work.

One thing that was missed (or unknown?) is that every character gains a 50% boost to attack while in Trance, on their regular attack, in addition to the command change that everyone except Steiner gets. If Steiner's 200% attack boost is okay, then wouldn't everyone else's also be okay? Not that it makes much difference most of the time, but it would certainly have helped Quina out.

Yeah that's kinda why I had to word it quite specifically by saying 'unique' abilities/buffs. Otherwise it would have been too easy I reckon. Thanks for watching 😀

Yeah, if he wasn't going for just the unique stuff I think the run could have been a little less frustrating. Freya is a MASSIVE DPS with her trance up, and spear is just good for AoE. Good, not great. Her regular attack command, however, can rival Steiner's in the mid to late game. I mean, I guess everyone can late game, but when I play casually I usually run a team of Zidane, Vivi, Eiko/Dagger, and Freya for the usual thief, mage, healer, warrior mix, and I've not seen a time where Freya doesn't hit the damage cap. And I'm not even that good at this game. I had no idea where the ultimate weapons and stuff were.
