Can Wood Cut Wood?

Few things, - Paperback veneer is definitely not the best option for this, - Alternating the pieces at a shallower angle and 90 degrees is likely a better idea - You CAN run a sawstop without the brake cartridge, you just need to use the bypass - You should probably have MUCH more clamping force on the mold than you have been using - I think the wood blade might benefit from a more aggressive, lower TPI pattern with more support for each tooth

Also, worth trying a harder wood than mahogany. Mahogany is popular, in part, because it isn't TOO hard, and is thus easy to work with, while still being hard enough for most furniture.
As a general rule, materials of the same hardness can cut each other under as long as they are sharpened enough and not so brittle to break under the required stresses to begin to cut the other material.
@off6848
Жыл бұрын
I don’t think sharpness matters here the teeth are destroyed first pass. It’s the carbonization that makes it stronger so just use a flat blade with a harder wood than what you’re cutting. The friction is doing all the work here

This is the equivalent of using a welder to melt sheet metal apart. So rebellious. Love it.
I like how the video unintentionally shows why carbon fiber (or really any) composites are so great. You can have a relatively weak fiber and a relatively weak matrix, but combine the two, and you have something with some incredibly strong mechanical properties. I’m assuming you are using epoxy resin, making this an epoxy-cellulose 0/90 laminate composite. I would recommend PFKK as a resin as it is generally better than epoxy but… well… it’s extremely hard to source and work with if you aren’t a professional within the composites industry.

I would really like to see this done again but with two differences: 1. Mix the abrasive into some resin before putting it on the wood. 2. Put the abrasive resin mixture only where the blades would be so you can go thicker using less abrasive. 3. File the teeth so that they are actually sharp.

I worked in a sawmill, 4 years as a saw filer. Round saws. Angle of grind, Kerf, the thickness of teeth. And .. feed and speed...very important. Heat will warp a saw blade. ❤ Kerf, carbide teeth, or dipped in epoxy and abrasives a few Times will build up. The Kerf...don't feed to fast....😊 the abrasive is only on the sides of the tool... no cut for teeth..not Necessary...🇺🇲✌👍
@skitidet4302

Filing teeth made out of abrasive resin so that they are "sharp". Genius on so many levels.
I just started at Alcom, a hauling trailer company, and I recently learned that the saw bolt has to tighten by screwing to the left because if it was a regular "rightytighty leftyloosey" the blade would come flyin off the saw! The blade must be tightened opposite of the direction the blade spins.
What if you were water-cooling the wood blade? Lots of metal-cutting machines already include a spout that shoots milky water (water with lubricant) onto the cutting area, maybe you can fit the wood blade to one of those machines and see if it lets you cut much faster. I don't think the wood would get particularly wet because at the speed you're going the water will basically turn to steam at the cutting surfsce.

Would cooling help? Spray with one of them spraybottles, just water on the sawblade. You could also try a thin metalsheet in between the layers of wood. So, cooling plus 2 metalsheets plus 3 layers of wood. And maybe soft wood like fir is less brittle? Plus abrasive.
That thumbnail to video transition was a thing of beauty

I love how the wood blades basically do burnouts on the work piece while cutting.
Reminds me of a project I once did that was basically the same concept but with a metal saw
That‘s probably the best advertisement for a saw I have ever Seen
Hey, just a tip, you only needed that abrasive on the cutting part of the blade, for example, if you look at a tile cutting blade, with "diamonds" on it, it's basically got maybe 5, round blades, that simply have the abrasive on them.

nice resin blade with a wooden core
What if you were able to coat the edges/ teeth of the saw blade so its not just the sides that have the mineral. Maybe it will give the teeth enough strength to actually survive against cutting.
I don't know if this would help, but when making fiber composites we do a layering direction of 0, 45, 90, -45, 0 which is called a quasiisotropic laminat. If you decide to try this again you could maybe layer the wood differently to make it mor balanaced. Not sure how much it would increase strength tho.
Really nice polishing
ProTip: Using cedar or pine as the wood saw will make your experience more pleasant. But seriously, this is way under engineered here & I bet you could think of ways to make it better. More homogeneous resin:to diamond ratio. Maybe a blade designed to minimize heat rather than cutting? Also what would you call that metal & saw dust material?
i love how you basically made a literal angle grinder disc lol.
10:08 by this logic wood tools should give you iron ore without deleting it if you mine it with a wooden tool
The risk of these wood blades exploding and impaling the operator would be a hard stop for me.
That reflective black result looked awesome for sure
You should try this with verawood. It's several times harder and more dense than mahogany. It'd be interesting to see if the hardness factor also makes it too brittle to use as a cutting blade. I'd also suggest quebracho, but it's really expensive and I doubt you could find enough that you'd want to waste it on something like this.
7:26 so the idea that you want to make a sawblade out of wood because it makes "infinity sawblades" is kind of out the window now isnt it?
Should've used epoxy mould release when you were making that 5 layered blade, it would've made it much easier to remove the wood that was sandwiching it, just for next time :)
This had me in stiches laughing at the bit where sparks were flying out the motor reminded me of photonicinduction especially the comment about torcturing the motor

5:50 Okay that actually looks gorgeous though. Like I'd want something with that sorta black polished look.

Wow, it was really cool to see this, can you try it with the edges fined down?, like sharpened edges instead of those blocky ones, but for it to not snap easily you can put a lot of those fake diamond grains on it
The polished pieces look cool, actually

Who would have thought that rubbing wood against wood at high speeds could start a fire
@Waterjet Channel you can turn off the sawstop safety by turning the key (Right side of the control box) for a few seconds until the LEDs start flashing, then start the saw while still holding the key. I run one for work and need to do that occasionally to cut wet wood or metal veneer plywood. Might still need the brake cartridge in place but you'll probably be able to run the table saw with the wood blade.
Brilliant way to make a sawblade out of wood. But as long as you took to make it, I'd wager it's more expensive than metal anyway.
