Can We Make This Comic Book the Highest-Graded in the CGC Census?

Today we’re opening a very cool variant comic published by Marvel Comics in the Silver Age: The UK Price Variant of Marvel Tales Annual 2. It’s exceedingly rare, with only one singular low-grade copy in the CGC Census. My plan is to evaluate this copy and potentially submit it to CGC in hopes of having the highest copy in the Census! Having the highest copy in the CGC Census of a Silver Age Marvel comic is usually a feat reserved for the very wealthy or very lucky. I want to see if we can accomplish this goal on a budget with some good old-fashioned diligence and hard work.
In this video i discuss historical significance of Marvel Tales as the first reprint series for most of the key issues of the Marvel Silver Age, UK Price Variants, and the CGC Census report for Marvel Tales Annual 2 as well as the fair market value and our strategy for securing the highest-graded copy in the CGC Census.

    It’s a nice looking book, Dr Paul. The gloss is striking in the video. A clean and a press will do wonders to it. A shame that there’s a peel at the bottom and the few rips also. Congrats on acquiring it and definitely mid-grade and will be highest on the census.

    I think you have a good shot at VG/FN after you work on it! With only 1 on the census and no sales data on pence variants what are the chances that is due to no record keeping in the past? Though I’m not sure when they started to separate those variant distinctions in the records. We are rooting for you, Dr. Paul!

  • @DrPaulKosnik

    @DrPaulKosnik

    Dan, it’s entirely possible that the single copy traded hands on a public platform in the past but the data were lumped in with those of the regular US print. If it happened more than two years ago I’d argue it is moot anyway as the sale point is not really relevant to current fair market value. But I think it more likely that it has never sold. Thank you for the well-wishes, hope you enjoy the series!

    Greetings from Georgetown. Do I think you're starting out underwater on this book? Heck no. UK price variants are, in my opinion, way undervalued. The comic market has already placed a premium on more modern Price variants (Canadian, .20 vs .25, etc). I purchased some early bronze age keys from Vectis auctions in the UK in NM/M condition knowing they are much rarer than their counterparts from the US for less than half the price. How many people get to say they have the highest graded copy on the census? Sounds cool to me.

    I’m sorta obsessed with those fireside books. I already own a few copies, including a first edition hardcover of Origins. They come up from time to time, but sellers usually want crazy money (not that I blame them) and I’m enjoying the hunt looking for a bargain.
